  • Yeah… we had a tedious day today - there have certainly been plenty of those lately! - so we crashed out, had some food & a couple of drinks, then grabbed a 78 at random. As it happened, a U.S. Melotone of Dick McDonough’s Orch., 1937 if I’ve got it right. Had it for years but seldom played it. What a soothing record! What musicianship; what a great singer Bullock was. How relaxed yet full of confidence is the cohesion of the performance.
OK, enough waffle - quite simply, it blew me away, so thought you might like it too.
The sound quality is superb; OTOH, you’ll see that the frequency response is nothing much to write home about, but the surface quality is gorgeous, and though the label babbles on about Brunswick, the disc itself would have been pressed at the Columbia factory in Bridgeport, CT., with the marvellous patented ‘laminated’ pressing that Columbia had developed in the earlier 1920s.
Incidentally, nothing whatsoever in the way of processing has been done to this disc; no decrackling, no re-equalising, and most certainly, no digital de-noising. (Why on earth de-noise something that does not need to be de-noised?) It was simply played with a .0035" TE stylus in a Shure SC35, through my home-made valve (tube) phono. preamplifier, straight into an old Ikey digital recorder.
Of course, what CZcams will do to the sound on upload, is an entirely different matter! 8^)
Still, hoping you enjoy the side. Cheers, Norman.

You're welcome, thanks. It's always nice to find a neglected record on the shelf! All the best & take care in these weird times. Cheers, Norman.

A wonder song from "The American Record Corporation" (ARC) Melotone! They always had fantastic artists.

Glad to hear you'r using a shure sc35 for one of the purposes for which it is most useful. I used to refer to it as the Brick with the nail when forced to play records into BBC programmes in the 1970s allthough the tracking force, at the time, 5gms, with a .6 conical stylus, was seen as suitable for the Library records. Strangely though, the change to the Ortofon OM pro with a .6conical point tracking between 4 and 6 grams did not seem to reveal great amounts of wear. However the corporation was, for disc, re-equiped with EMT players in the majority of broadcast studios by the 1980's.
The quality of this recording is astounding, as you say there is no re eq. If I may ask what eq do you use in the reproduction of 78's generally, RIAA or nothing?

A nice West Coast laminated pressing I assume with the central ring? But why would there be both 50 and 60 kc/s hums on this recording? Surely Crystalate wouldn't have their fingers on this US record. Nice sound anyway:- Love it.

Crystalate released quite a few Chick Bullock records on theiir Imperial and Rex labels throughout the 30's, AFAIK know they had some tie-up with ARC, and some /most Melotones were issued under pseudonyms in the UK

@@musiccity123 I believe that at one time, U.K. Crystalate owned 33% of U.S. Plaza, until it all fell apart as the Great Depression really took over... Best regards, Norman.
