A very enjoyable video Pat with plenty of interest - the gear, your modifications (great innovation btw), the camp itself and the cooking. You must have the best wild camp tucker in the country! One question: do you take precautions against ticks - repellant, insecticide sprays etc? It seems they are becoming more of a problem in the UK generally and are abundant up here in Scotland.

Thanks very much for bringing back some great memories of Kinder and surrounding area. We did this wild camping in the 1970s. One of the trips we did in winter on the top of Kinder was in a plastic bag ,only one night duecto the condensation. My friend Roy and i did it in the snow ,there were no insulation mats then ,we used 12 ,12 inch polystyrene tiles taped together to open into a mat ,very good insulation on the snow.tried the plastic bag twice ,could not overcome the condensation. Better as a bivvy. Thanks again for these memories, im there now on the top of Kinder . We are both from Sutton Coldfield so 1.5 drive and we are there. Also we have done most of the caving up there for many years ,the memories coming back .Knotlowe mjnes ,awesome. We are both over 80 now ,but still do walks up there ,but not so long. Take care everyone. Thanks again for the memories. Roy and John.

Hi Patrick really enjoyed this wild camp video and weather this summer has been strange not a proper summer weather. Nice little tent and mods I hope work so good. Good that you can mod these tents and get it the way you want. It's given me ideas as I've got a few tents. I have sewing kit and I having sewing machine you can do your own repairs etc. Steak and chips that looked good and it's good to watch you cook these meals and giving me ideas on meals when camping myself. I just hate it when backpack is heavy and getting lighter stuff as I could do with lightweight sleeping mat. If a barmaid down south poured a pint like you do, we would think there is something wrong with the pump! (Btw - how do you stay so skinny drinking all that beer?). I really (to avoid the word "extremely") appreciate that you eat spaghetti with just a fork! I'll explain to you, why: I was once in Italy for work and was invited to a really good restaurant. Of course, one of the many courses was spaghetti. As I looked around my plate (where vast amounts of cutlery were draped), the very attentive host asked me what I was looking for. When I said that I was looking for a spoon (that's how I learned to do it at home: you turn the fork in a spoon to roll up the spaghetti), I got the answer: "HERE WE DO NOT need a spoon ..." and that was the end of the rest of the business visit - I had behaved in the most embarrassing way without realizing it... And when I was back in Germany at the company, my boss greeted me with the question of what bad thing had happened in Italy... 😱 Now, I can laugh about it, but since then I have never ever eaten spaghetti with the help of a spoon. 😂

Hello old man! (I am allowed to say this because I am 2 years younger than you! 🤣) I share your insights on the topic of "We will all grow old, even if we don't like it" - but ... ... I think it is important to have a "Plan B" for the phase of life in which you will be physically limited. As a student I started with an aquarium - quite special, because I created a real biotope with fish and plants of a certain area that were a perfect match and I had a very lucky hand with it. I enjoyed it a lot. But as the workload increased and the free time available (that is less than "free time") I had to give up this lovely hobby because caring for the plants and fish in a species-appropriate manner takes a lot of time. Even back then (I was only 25 or so) I had the plan: when you get old and frail, you can take up this hobby again. Since then I have looked forward to it and am much less afraid of reaching this stage in life. Until then, of course, I want to experience as much as possible outdoors in nature (hiking, cycling, kayaking) so that I can live off these memories later - without regrets because I did "everything". Yes, of course I could have done this or that and also... but as long as I can say at the end "I experienced (almost) everything!" (100% is never possible...), I have done everything right. And then it's good and I'm satisfied. New activities await: in my case, my aquarium. And ... maybe there is more that I don't know about yet? Exciting... 😊 P.S.: I went hiking in Scotland once (1986) and one morning I was eaten alive by midgets... they had made it INTO my sleeping bag (despite the protection of a Hilleberg tent)... I almost went mad and fled to the top of a hill in the cold morning drizzle (it wasn't even 6 o'clock) because up there was a bit of a wind. It didn't take long before my travel companion followed me... Since then I've known: that's my weak spot - psychologically I can hardly cope with such attacks from mosquitoes/midgets... Fortunately, that was only the experience of one single day. The rest of the holiday was great! Since I was travelling with a school friend and we had a joint budget, we had to do a final calculation: - 1/3 went for bus/train/ferry, - 1/3 for food... - and we simply drank the last third... Cheers to Scottish whisky 🥃and stout! 🍺 🤣

Hi that is a great way to think, so you have something to look forward to when you do get old, I will have to come up with some relaxing hobbies for my later years. Like you I do cram in as much as I can, and everyday has to be full, my wife says I never sit down and I can do 10000 steps in a day and not leave the house or garden, As for midges I agree with you they could sent me mad so try and avoid, or camp high hopefully with a breeze blowing......thanks Pat

Hey Patrick watching from Australia- enjoying your videos. Wondering what you did before your camping videos - before you “retired” - I hope I am not mistaken but we are similar in age - me 72. It’s great that you do this and have the body fitness to do so , mental strength etc. Well done living in nature every so often. Yes need to keep it as lite as possible especially as we get older - luckily they invent things but I agree to modifying what works. In Australia as I get older it’s the heat and keeping cool as your body doesn’t handle the heat so well. Guess I am heading for a shopping centre retirement with free air-con 🤣🤣 Aussies know what I mean.

Hello Patrick! The thing that bothers me about all tents of this type is the low height. I once had the Hilleberg Akto and when it was stolen I was almost glad that I had to buy a new tent. I'm only an average 1.75 m tall, but I could never sit in the tent entrance without ducking my head (and that's exactly where you want to sit when it's raining and you want to cook in the awning) - that really annoyed me. The rest of the tent was great, if not spectacular. That's why I kept taking it on trips - and always ended up getting annoyed. I then found a Robens tent (the "Kite" (czcams.com/video/EcI4fDNgMCo/video.html), which is unfortunately no longer produced - I could only get hold of it second-hand) that has the crucial 10 cm more height - that's an incredible gain in comfort! And like the Akto, you can pitch it - if you have no other option - with a single peg at each end. (or 1 end tied to the kayak, the other to a tree root) Unfortunately, the tent weighs 2.35 kg, because it has 3 poles and is made of "heavy duty quality" which of course has its advantages. But the weight doesn't matter for my bike or kayak tours. For my hiking tours, I tried the Chinese Lanshan 2 pro - but the single-wall construction has its disadvantages... Weight and pack size are of course great! Now I have the DURSTON X-Mid 2 and I'm delighted: ~1 kg, minimal footprint and 4 pegs are really enough and I always hike with hiking poles anyway. Although this tent now seems ideal to me, I have also "pimped" it, because with 45 years of outdoor experience, I know many small, helpful tricks from many tents [yes, I also had to engage my sewing machine ;-) ] - and it's the little things that ultimately decide whether a tent is "pretty good" or "top notch". Your idea with the clothespins is funny and good; with these clips from the sewing accessories you can optimize this even further: they are super strong, super small, super light, super cheap - and the metal clip is made of stainless steel. Hi Ralf, yes the tent has limited head room, but you will n ever get the perfect tent, its lightweigh attracted me and since this video I have sorted the door roll up and a few more pockets so looking good. The little clips you show I know them as magic clips and use them for my sewing projects instead of pins, but good for tent doors as well. I have an older tent a Field and Trek Trailmaker, great size and massive porch for cooking but the weight is too much, so its just finding the happy medium between weight and features.......thanks Pat

That's a great place to start a walk I think Patrick. I remember going over to Fox House via Limb Valley, when I was a young lad, about 55 years ago, and it was very beautiful, and very peaceful then. There have been some changes since, and Whinfell Quarry Gardens is certainly not what it was. Also Whinfell House, home of the Neal family (of James Neal Tools/Eclipse) fame is no longer a private house, but rather a sort of posh housing estate. The ex-Councillor who was supposed to sort out the private funding for the disastrous World Student Games was given a house there, (replete with swimming pool), along with a very fat salary (and failed to raise a single penny in private funding). I've walked there so many times, and it's a good route on a scorchingly hot day. I still have a Terra Nova tent, had that one for about 30 years! They're good tents, but one of my complaints as a gear-tester back then, (and it is a long time ago), is that they weighed twice what the given weight was! You shot up Limb Valley Pat! 😁It looks like the old ruined farmhouse has gone, and the path looks to have been simplified a bit. Watch out for them cows, they nearly killed a bloke a few years back! 😱 It sounds like you should be designing tents Pat! 🙂 Great video, I'm glad you're as active as ever, and what a feast! 👍

Hi Jack yes Limb valley is a great way to get up to Ringinglow shaded by the trees on a hot day, the old Whirlow Hall has shut but a new cafe, in the old toilet block has recently opened and worth a visit. I had planned a camp today but far too hot so will have to wait for cooler conditions, may walk up to the Norfolk Arms later in the week instead.....thanks Pat

@@patrickdickinson6492 Hi Pat, I've heard that the family who once owned it used to refer to it as Little Switzerland. That's a shame about Whirlow Hall, it was still very old fashioned the last time I was there, though usually I went past the dam like you did. I hope that you can get out again soon my friend. If ever you need a really big rucksack for some reason, I have a couple of very good ones that are brand new, but date from the mid 90's 👍

Great mods to your Laser there Pat. I’ve got a similar shelter that I’ve done plenty to mine but really like those D-rings you’ve put on to solve the issue with staking the inner. Luckily my Mrs helps with the sewing as my fingers have no intelligence 😅👍🏼👍🏼 All the best👍🏼

Thanks Jack, certainly improved my tent and not to difficult, if I did it again I might have used plastic 18 mm rings instead of the D rings as I think they will fit better, but both good at end of the day, all the bnest with your mods......thanks Pat

Great video. Your pronunciations made me laugh. Catalan is spoken in Barcelona so that doesn't help. Prat = meadow for example. I hate carrying anything, a bum bag around the waist is the only thing I find comfortable. No room for a tent but ok for my sketching stuff. I don't know how you lug 10 kilos about. Exellent photography in all you vids
