Extremely Wet Wildcamp Derwent Valley

- Leaving Sheffield we drive out to Derwent Valley in the Peak District, passing a bend in the road where I wrote off my first car 50 years ago, which brings back many memories of my early driving experiences.
Aiming to camp at Crow Stones, high up in the Derwent valley we head up onto Howden Edge to be met with severe rain and mist. A decision is taken to adbandon the planned Crow Stones camp, due to bad conditions, and camp lower down the valley where a few glasses of Aberlour 12 year old single malt could be enjoyed in more pleasent conditions
Such a positive guy. He really knows how to lift the spirits
Always love on the positive side, always done it.. thanks Pat
especially with a glass of whisky in his hand.... :)
And drink them! 😂
This was incredible! Thank you for taking us along on your discoveries. Can't wait for the next one!

Hi Pat. No-one can ever accuse you of being a fair-weather camper!
No, love a bit of rain, just not 16 hours....thanks Pat
Pat, your wildcamps Always make me feel better, appreciate your sharing of all your effort and joy!
That's really great to hear, and great having you along on my adventures.... thanks Pat
Ive been hiking around there and over to Crow Stones today in glorious weather that would have been perfect for a camp. Something very soothing about listening to the rain bouncing off the tent though knowing you’re nice and toasty in the sleeping bag
Lovely area to hike with some fantastic views down the Derwent Valley, Crow Stones is somewhere I want to camp, may save it for winter as it seems a popular spot……….thanks Pat
Another cracking video Patrick, much appreciated. 🍺
My pleasure Gazza..... thanks Pat
Good on ya Pat for getting out whatever the weather, you're inspiring. Look forward to a Christmas bevvie with you next month. Leanne & J. X
Thanks L:eanne, a bit of a wet one, but still so enjoyable.....see you in the pub shed, drink in hand....all the best Pat
Love your adventures Pat, many reasons to be grateful, a privilage to be able to do it.
Yes a real privilege to be able to roam these beautiful places..... thanks Pat
THE GOAT!!! Loving it Patty wild camping always brings out the best in us
Certainly brings the best out in me, my perfect environment..... thanks Pat
Entertaining as always pat, especially when you get on the Amber stuff...always brings a smile to my face when I see you get that out.
Thank you so much..... really alive out there..... thanks Pat
It's all about decision making , being flexible and working with the prevailing conditions at any given time. That's why your camps are always so successful and entertaining Pat. You are a noble ambassador for all that is so inspirational about embracing the great outdoors. Thanks for continuing to pass on your experience and wisdom. Good health !
Yes agree there Thomas, all part of the fun and challenge of wild camping......all the best Pat
Yes. I was going to say there are three essential elements that Patrick has demonstrated are needed for a successful wild camp: experience, planning and the right kit. But you've nailed another, which is intelligence.
The worst exercise I ever did, when in the army, was only a 3-day exercise in the woods of Farnborough, UK in 1976. It wasn't cold, but it rained for those 3 days, non-stop. All of our equipment and spare clothing was soaking wet. We slept in shell scrapes which filled with water overnight. It was awful. My hands were painful because the skin around my nails was peeling and red raw due to being constantly wet. I did many longer exercises after that, but that one will never leave my memory. We were all so miserable.
Steve I was there too.
Yes Steve the rain gets everywhere, including one of my cameras, glad it was just a overnighter, then back home to dry out.... thanks Pat
My friend I have no doubt that this built your character
The worst exercise…. Main battle camp, Sennybridge, Jan/Feb 1984. The horror! 🥶
Great video as always Pat. Your positive outlook is inspiring.
Always look on the positive side with everything, no negatives..... thanks Pat
Fair play Pat. Youre hardcore!
Another brilliant video as usual!
Thankyou
Thanks Johnny, just dedicated to the great outdoors..... thanks Pat
Thanks for taking us with you again Patrick. Loved it. That was not an easy camp and you made sure we had a good time.
Perfectly stated; Agree 100%.
Hi Christopher, definitely not easy filming in the rain, but the camp was still a great adventure...... thanks Pat
Thank you for yet another wonderful adventure Pat. I'm glad you decided against venturing further up. You definitely teach us about making the safest choices. We can't wait to see you in your pub. Happy days.x
Yes would of been risky to carry on, can be difficult at to change your plans, glad I did....... thanks Pat 👍
Wow, the sound of that rain on the tent. Classic vid again Pat, and as you say, you know your gear is well up to the task.
Certainly plenty of rain on the tent in this video, but always enjoyable...... thanks Pat
Great video Pat, looked like you had a great time and I really enjoyed it.Thanks for taking the time to put out such great videos.Take care Pat.
Thanks Stephen
Fantastic video as always Pat. I love the sound of rain on a tent. I'm really looking forward to your Christmas special from the pub shed. By the way, I really liked the driving scenes, the countryside is beautiful, even at this time of year. All the best, Shane
Hi Shane, thanks for that, driving has got me into alot of bother, but alway love a bomb round....see you in the pub in December...... thanks Pat
Brilliant stuff yet again Patrick, Your sense of humour and practical knowledge of this great hobby shone through again.. Who needs other channels (who are classed as "influencers" by their own volition) when we've got our very own PD with a proper personality for CZcams
Really nice comments which I do appreciate so much.... all the best Pat
Love the vid and history.
Thanks, been my pleasure.....Pat
Pat you inspire so many people your a legend
Its just so rewarding out there....thanks Pat
Hi Patrick,Thank you for including the car footage, I used to cycle that route from Shirecliffe to Derwent dam in the 1960s it was an easy ride out downhill but was a nightmare to get back, the bit past Strines was hard going lol.
I could imagine, so easy in a car, I could imagine you were all alot stronger and fitter back then..... thanks Pat
Absolutely brilliant again pat. It's interesting that you thought about the satellite tracker, because you camp alone, safety is paramount.!!!! Maybe it could be a Christmas present from your family.?
Take care pat, and looking forward to the meeting in the pub shed. 🙏👌😀
I have thought about the tracker for a while, but couple of time had to move, so time to act.... thanks Pat
As always, another great vid 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Patricia, a little wet, but still alot of fun in the tent..... thanks Pat 😊
Lovely to see you out in this weather Pat!
Good to be out at anytime...... thanks Pat
Joy! Patrick takes us camping again. I enjoyed the expansive list of positives stated about camping in such conditions. I am sure "testing your equipment is important to many people but, I think your end-conclusion that it is "what camping is all about" is spot on. Thank you.
Thank you Richard, there are always positives, in everything we do, sometimes difficult to find them.... thanks Pat 😊
Oh Patrick what a fab upload. Your stamina and tenacity are immeasurable to say the least. What a fella. I really enjoyed watching this and ALL your uploads actually. Stay safe, stay well. Best regards from Richard:-)
Glad you enjoyed it Richard, a bit wet, but anytime in the tent is a good time......thanks Pat
Patrick, you are our 'Man For All Seasons' !.
Thanks again for an excellent video.
Wishing you and your family a Very Merry Christmas and all the best for the coming year.
Cheers, Michael 👏👏
Thank you so much Michael and very kind of you to say, I'll see you in the pub shed just before Christmas..... thanks Pat
Another brilliant video. Thanks Pat
Thank you so much.....Pat
I bet the drive home feels really relaxing after that long walk carrying the rucksack.
Great videos mate. This is how people should be living their lives - doing things. So many people do nothing but watch tv.
They should dump the MSM voice, mix with their fellow man. Peace be unto you.
Yes very good feeling driving home, great time, got all my footage, and planning the next trip.... thanks Pat
Thank you Patrick. I am looking forward to watching this. I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to have gone out on that day so thank you for doing it on my behalf! All the very best.
Takes a bit of motivation at first, but once out, it's just great..... thanks Pat
Always an excellent show, your camps are. I think the whisky review in the tent with the poster of the bottle was brilliant!
It's great to see your channel almost to 50K subscribers. It seems as word spreads through the whisky community you could pick up quite a few more.
I'm already looking forward to your next highly enjoyable video. With that weather, I'm glad you'll be coming to us from the Pub Shed!
Hi Peter for me wild camping and a drop of whisky go together so well, after a hard day in the hills, what could be better...... thanks Pat
You're an absolute trooper Patrick. Thanks for another brilliant video. Can't beat a wee dram to keep the cold at bay - Aberlour is one of my favourites too.
Yes Kevin, a wee dram in the tent at night, just great...... thanks Pat
Pat, this was brilliant! On your drive I swear to God it felt like I was sat next to Colin McRae on a Rally stage 😂 Please take care X I thought I would let you know, both of your favourite Glenfiddich's are on offer in Morrison's right now 😊👍
We felt the same lol . 😯
Hi Andrew, yes always enjoyed a good bomb round in my car, radio on full blast and I,am 20 again...may have to pay Morrisons a visit..... thanks Pat
My tolerance for wet weather camping is pretty low these days...its just so insidious, no matter what you do, the wet always wins and makes things miserable. Wearing waterproofs is pointless when hiking and lugging a heavy backpack, as I just get get drenched from within by sweating, no matter how 'breathable' the jacket is supposed to be. I don't mind freezing cold as long as its dry, I don't mind baking hot and sweating, as at least I can get stuff dry at the end of the day...but cold & wet, its just the worst possible weather for anything & everything.
Yes not the best coditions, but still provided a few challenges, and worked out fine in the end.....thanks Pat
Cheer up mate.
Totally correct mate, anyone whom says they enjoy it is a liar, it’s a miserable affair.
Shorts and fast drying footwear is the way forward unless its icy cold, your feet and legs will stay warm with movement and dry off faster when resting. Plus you wont sweat as much. Also always have a micro towel, and change of clothes in a dry sack for when your tent is up.
Alternatively, you can move to a hot weather country 🤪👍🤞
Awww never mind princess
Thanks so much for another vid. I hope you enjoy yourself as much as we all enjoy watching your adventures.... even in weather like that.
Thanks Warren, and yes enjoy everyone of my camps, my special time.... thanks Pat
Another Fantastic upload patrick as always keep up your fantastic work fella 🤗
Thanks for the visit....Pat
You’re like a formula 1 driver behind the wheel lol😂
If only....well you can dream.....thanks Pat
If you no longer go for the gap that exists you’re no longer a racing driver - Ayrton Senna
I'm only 3 minutes in but I could literally just listen to you talking whilst you're driving around all day. I really wanna know about this trouble you got into driving your cars in younger years!
I love driving, not with the wife though, flat out, radio on full blast and I,m 20 again, it has given me a few ideas for the pub shed and a bit of remannicing....thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 what happened to the motorbike Pat?
Always love your wild camping videos, Patrick - they're one of my happy, safe places in a mad world.
Thanks Natasha, once up in the hills in my tent, real life is just left behind..... thanks Pat
Thanks again for the videos Pat, it’s like exploring with a long lost friend.
My pleasure.....thanks Pat

Hi Patrick
Jenny and Michael
Another fabulous vlog
Your passion is amazing
We love your vlogs.
Thankyouxx
Hi Jenny, in my element out there, good weather or bad weather..... thanks Pat
Jees Pat, you look drenched (and thanks for saying 'sopping wet', not heard that in years!), love your yomps and taking me to places I know well from the comfort of my chair in Scotland. Hard work mate, but with a stoic attitude as you develop up that neck of the woods. All the best mate, thanks for posting, and wishing you and yours a happy christmas and new year. Nick
Yes definitely wet, in fact the wettest I,ve been for many years....but still a great time in the ⛺ tent....... thanks Pat
Glad you survived the heavens! yet again another excellent video!
Hi Simon, a wet one, but great when in a nice dry tent..... thanks Pat
Thank you for sharing, yet another great camping expedition Pat! It's good to see your experiences with a wet weather camp, it's a motivation for me to do the same as its nearly always raining at the weekend! Test out the wet weather gear. Looking forward to your Christmas video in the pub shed 🙂🍺
Yes camping in rain does have advantages.....see you at Christmas....... thanks Pat
Good on you Pat, camping in the wet weather 👍. You looked cosy in the tent with the sound of rain outside.
Enjoyed the video as usual Pat, good job 😊
Thanks Jim, yes very cozy in my tent, whisky helped a bit.... thanks Pat
Good day Pat. Another great video. Good weather for ducks! Love the sound of rain on the tent - I even have the sound on my phone to listen to. Take care and all the best. Steve
Hi Steve, yes great day, even with all the rain..... thanks Pat 👍
Thanks for the trip and having me with you, allways enjoyable. looking forward to the next one . Best to you and your family from Denmark
Great to have you among....... thanks Pat
New subscriber here, and I love your videos. Another positive thing about camping in the rain (or in any bad weather) is education. You educate us newbies on tent camping in bad weather. I learn a lot just from watching your videos as well as other folks who camp in adverse conditions. I have yet to camp in the rain, but I hope too soon. I'll see you in your pub shed! Cheers!
Nice to have you along on my adventures, were all learning all the time, .... thanks Pat
Excellent video as always pat,we’re so lucky in sheffield to have the peaks on our door step
Thanks Lee...yes so lucky.... thanks Pat
Great camp Pat. I agree it’s a good idea putting your gear to the test. You deserve congratulations after that camp, you’re certainly hard core. Look forward to the next one.
Hi Philip, yes great test of my gear, and of me.... thanks Pat
Just watched all the way through….I take my hat off to you Patrick, you made a great decision to relocate the camp, and I appreciate the lengths you go to to bring us the footage, you definitely deserved the night cap , of you’re favourite whiskey ….Thankyou 👍💪🇮🇲
Thanks for watching it all the way through, love making the videos, and the great comments..... thanks Pat
Hi Pat,another brilliant video, great to hear about your earlier driving experiences made me chuckle, love how you plan your wild camps and stick to it no matter the weather, and hey see you in the shed pub drinks are on you, see you there! :)
Hi Patricia, yes, love the driving, but did get me into trouble at work, love the wild camps as well, makes you feel really alive out there...... thanks Pat
A joy to watch, as always 👍
Thanks for the visit.......Pat
Fantastic upload pat! Wanting to camp in allsorts of weather's a dream of many , but to do it is in the realm of few. I love camping in challenging situations, always have. Your camps are inspirational. Well done buddy. Crack on
Thanks Richard, yes the reward from camping in extreme conditions is enjoyable, such a great feeling of satisfaction afterwards..... thanks Pat
Great vid again Patrick . Enjoyed it and yr never ending endurance to these extreme conditions.. . Many thanks.. an achievement for sure..look forward to yr nxt one in the pub shed.. lv Ali/R x

Thanks Chris, loads to talk about, see you in the pub shed...... thanks Pat
North of England winter weather is very wet and miserable, thankfully, you put little sunshine back in our lives, once more Pat, very enjoyable 👍
Yes we,ve had some poor weather recently, making up for the dry summer..... thanks Pat
Another fantastic video Patrick, my hat goes off to you climbing in those conditions, so glad you chose not to go higher. Beautiful place to walk when it’s dry, not that it isn’t in the wet! Looking forward to a catch up in the pub shed!!!
Thanks Sylvia , definitely the right decision not to carry, , unbelievable wet up there.... thanks Pat 😊
Thanks Pat another absolutely outstanding video as always, as soon as I get my notification I know a good time is coming watching it, we need that video about driving pat, thought ya was gonna write that car off 🤣🤣
Haha, yes we may have a chat about my driving experiences in the pub one day, with a few old photos of course.....thanks Pat
Thanks for the interesting video Pat. I had to try and explain to my wife why you would find this wild camp enjoyable. I'm glad you helped me out as well.
Yes many people do not understand, including my wife...... thanks Pat
I liked the hair-raising drive to the car par!. The rest was vintage malt! All very enjoyable, and looking forward to your Xmas number from the shed pub! Thank's Pat!
Yes always enjoyable when out in the tent...... thanks Pat
Fantastic sir Pat, Even with all that rain you still looked very comfortable. Food ad whiskey and the sound of the rain and the river. Stay safe.
Thank you so much, yes once settled in the tent is was lovely and cozy, with my favourite whisky for company..... thanks Pat
Pat, another of your classics. You are our squadron leader Guy Gibson. Cannot wait to hear more about your driving! The A57 is a great drive.
My long time hero, Guy Gibson.....the driving sequence has given me a few ideas for shed pub come chatting videos..... thanks Pat
Great video as always thanks Patrick . Also a good exercise in positive thinking. Making it an enjoyable experience despite the elements.
Yes even in the rain... lovely time..... thanks Pat
Another great video Patrick.
I look forward to your next one.
You are so right about what people say about going out in all weathers. I’m the same and go out whatever the weather as it’s already planned.
I’m pleased that the tent held up to the weather too as it’s a tent that I keep looking it. Thanks again for a great video.
Hi Ed, yes once it's on the calender then I,am going no matter what, would be a bit boring if it was always nice fine weather. Been very pleased with Soulo, gives you that added security, might be a little heavy, but for me that's strength..... thanks Pat
Brilliant video as always, great entertainment keep up the great videos
Thanks Mark if I,am entertaining, then that's all I want to hear...... thanks Pat
Thanks, Pat! Your videos always inspire new ideas for adventures and drinks!
Thanks for mentioning the whiskey, i like to take a hot toddy for winter hiking. Cheers!
Very nice whisky, hope you like it.......Pat
Thanks for the camp Pat, good to see some lovely countryside down there. Had the great privilege of meeting up with Martin Zero for a trip into the Megatron a littlewhileago, noticed your signature on one of the stones.
Hi yes saw the video in my old stomping ground.....we do have a lovely area on our doorstep..... thanks Pat
What a beautiful spot for camping...thanks for the visit Patrick 😉
My pleasure Hamish...... thanks Pat
good to see you back uploading!
Thanks Joe
Joyful as always. 👍
Thank you so much.....Pat
Loved the video, yeah supposed have gone up to Scafell yesterday but the weather was going to be atrocious. So I'm off possibly this Sunday up somewhere in the Peak District! Keep em coming!
Fingers crossed!....we are certainly getting the rain we missed in summer.....thanks Pat
Such a wonderful and intresting man. Nice one Pat, another great vid as always.
That's really nice of you to say Scott..... thanks Pat
Great to see you out no matter the weather Pat. Can't believe it's almost December! See you in the pub shed before Christmas🍻 Take care.
Where did the year go !....see you in the pub.... thanks Pat
Another cracking video Pat. You did well to still camp and make the most out of it instead of bailing in such horrible weather.
Once I,am on my way, that's it for two days, no turning back...... thanks Pat
I’m glad you took us along virtually during that drive😂. Nice camp as always, cheers!
Hi Antonie, I,ve not hit anything for years !!!, all the best Pat
Another feelgood vid Pat for a miserable Saturday afternoon. Was going to keep you for Sunday but as you know you're addictive. You do wonders for my BP as does a narrowboat vlogger Country House Gent. Thanks a million. From Chester sub.
Great to hear from you Philip, and thanks for kind comments......Pat
Loved the video Pat as always..looked hard going.
Thanks Mal, set my sights on Crow Stones and accepted I had a hard trek, the weather did make it tougher, but once original camp was abandoned, then easy walking, although the constant rain was avery uncomfortable, once in the tent with my whisky as a companion, everything was fine...... thanks Pat.
I love being in a tent listening to the rain. Your approach to this camp was again inspirational. You would be a great bloke to have on side in adversity.
Felt so safe and secure in the tent, even after all the rain, lovely place to be.... thanks Pat
Once again Patrick very entertaining!!! You have a great talent doing all the filming 🎥 etc ...loved the little jog you did 👍I'm still camping and will be 70 next year ....not a winter camper tho I couldn't spend those long dark hours in a tent ....keep the videos coming and take care .....#properchap 🙂
Great to be able to share my adventures, it was only a little jog, 50 meters ..... all the best Pat
good to see you making the most of this wet weather we have been having.
Did,nt want to miss out in getting drenched....haha.... all the best Pat 😊
Love to follow your walks on an OS map Patrick. This one reminded me of my soirees onto the Peak District decades ago when I was newly joined into the RAF. The mist and persistent rain was a salutary reminder of just how dire conditions can get up there very quickly and the need to make sensible decisions for your safety. Great selection of malt whiskey; a favourite of mine as well I might add. Thanks again.
Yes Tom, constant rain, can be the hardest and most uncomfortable..... thanks Pat
Brilliant Patrick.. really enjoyed that.. that tent must be a good one to keep you nice and dry from the elements.. you looked so cozy in there.. ATB Patrick from Ontario Canada 👍👏
Hi Kenny, yes Hilleberg Soulo, just perfect for winter camping, suffered a bit with condensation, but sure most other tents would if, very cozy with my single malt for company..... thanks Pat
Hi pat glad your good and out adventuring. Your an inspiration and I throughly enjoy your videos about your trips. Thankyou. Regards Karl Stockport.

Will do Michael.... thanks Pat
