Laying out the Stiles and Rails for a 12 Lite Sash
zhlédnutí 603Před 14 hodinami
I take you through the math, fractions and decimals to lay out the mortises on a 12 lite sash. I use just a regular calculator. The way I do it has a few checks built into it and toward the end, those checks came in handy because I miscalculated something and it showed up in my layout. Anyway, hope you learn something from this.
Carpentry in Window Craft - Fitting a New Six Lite Bottom Sash.

Scott and I went down to Fort Myers, Florida where a client is fixing up his old house to sell. He has a LOT of rotten window sashes, most of which have been repaired once already. Carpentry in Window Craft might well be classified as the second of three major historic trade disciplines. The first is Joinery - the making of sashes, doors and other useful wooden elements. Carpentry is the art of...

Many have asked for videos to help with muntin layout. Here’s an easy one. One 3/4” mortise between a bottom rail and a meeting rail. How do you get it perfect, every time? Do it this way and eliminate as much human error as possible. If you didn’t learn fractions in school, here’s your chance. Because that’s the way we do it - fractions.
Sash Factory Overnight? Not Hardly.

It took many years of trial and error for my current version of the Sash Factory to emerge. I started with a shaper and ultimately to proved to be too much, like driving an 18 wheeler to the grocery store to get a gallon of milk. Discovering a matched window sash set, I bought a router table. With that and a router table at the end of my big table saw, I made several sashes. I have experience a...
Remove the Paint Finish AND the Glass in Under Twelve Minutes!
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 2 měsíci
The team member working the sash needs to be able to strip, sand, prime and reglaze a one lite sash in under 2 hours. How is this possible? Part of the secret is to combine the Paint Shaver, ProScraper and orbital sander as part of your strategy. Admittedly, the glass is not always as easy to get out as it was in this video, but regardless, when you’re able to strip the flats in eight minutes, ...

Rolling into 2024 I couldn’t help but scroll through everything that happened in 2023. I think the biggest thing for me wasn’t the projects. It was the people. I got to work with so many good people in 2023 from family to acquaintances to long term relationships - I’m really grateful. I’m betting 2024 is going to be another year of relationships. Many people believe we restore windows - but act...

Cutting Wavy Glass Freehand for a Diamond Lite Wood Window Sash
zhlédnutí 1,9KPřed 10 měsíci
I love the quiet sounds of cutting antique wavy glass. The gentle scores, the crisp snaps are somewhat hypnotic. I cut freehand, rarely using a straight edge or even a marker, and teach my students to do the same. “Trust Thyself” and develop the skills. It’s ok to use a straight edge or a marked line, or both. That’s part of mastering the movement. But eventually one must let go of the training...

If you put a little rubbing alcohol on your fingers it will not tear and allows for a smooth service. Works awesome!!
Isn't lightweight spackle only recommended for interior use?
To much talking but not noth work dude
If I had a dollar for every ok
Great stuff.
Man I love your videos
That was great. Thanks for putting this up. Is there more detail work to be done on that sash before glazing and painting or are you pretty close to being done on it?
I took a slightly different approach. I added 1/16” to my window dimension and that allowed for muntin spacing on a 1/16” increment. If needed, I can plane the outside of the stiles at dry fit.
Best video I've seen on this subject and as far as the joint compound powder goes ,does it matter if it's a 5 , 20 , 45 or 90 grade bag , i noticed your's was 20 , im thinking it shouldn't but im just over thinking it , thanks 😊
Where do you get the wavy glass? I've been moving heaven and earth to get that for our window project.
Great tips and links. Thanks for the effort!
Thank you! I have same style latch/keeper mechanism with newer friction fit instead of lead weights from the late 50's.
My one reservation about using the paint shaver is that it seems to shoot dust and paint chips everywhere, despite the vacuum connection. I wouldn’t care if I were in a big shop but since I work out of my basement, I have to be conscious about keeping things somewhat clean
You make this look SO easy. I just did 3 old windows with the tube. So difficult!!!! Thanks for the tips
I use these products on my old windows. Great stuff.
Previous owner put vinyl windows in my rear sunroom of my house several years ago. None of them really close or open well. The frames look distorted and the locks don't work right. Luckily they left the original wood windows in the rest of the house.
You don't show finished work? SMFH
What kind of wood do you use here?
Do you have to treat or paint that exposed planed surface? For weatherproofing?
In almost every circumstance, no. Every original sash I’ve ever taken out is left unpainted on the sides to allow moisture a path of escape.
Ah ok. Hmm I got a new sash window made and they have painted it all over
The exception to the rule is the new wood called Accoya. Accoya is a really good wood that is treated with Acetic Acid in a way that keeps bugs out, stabilizes the wood and makes it probably the perfect wood for window sashes and doors. Their specs say it needs to be coated on all four sides and encapsulated like an M&M. And if that’s what your sash is made of, that’s protocol. However, I had to stop using Accoya - I used it for many years, the sash in the video is made with it - because as golden as the wood is, I could never get it to stop attracting mold. I could make a perfect sash and paint it perfectly, put next to a 100 year old sash that hasn’t been touched for 50 years and after a season, my new one would be black with mold and the original would be unchanged. It was crazy. I tried for several years to get help from Accoya and paint coating companies. I eventually had so many call backs that I just had to give up and seek out a different wood. I now use Spanish Cedar and follow the advice I initially gave you.
@@WoodWindowMakeover thank you!
Does anyone have any advice on a more lightweight repair when the meeting rails are only off 1/8 or 1/4 inch? The culprit is also a shifting house; I have other windows that are more severe like in the video. So, I'm looking at removing triangles of material 1/8 high or less. I'm a little out of my depth, but I was thinking of scribing a line as Steve suggests here, and then using a hand plane to remove that bit of material.
Coverstain is USELESS for exterior work. It traps moisture in causing timber to rot and it isn't flexible.
I am understanding the indexing process, but am wondering about the cup and crown of the grain and cut, and how that is in relation to window structure. (Inside/outside perimeter, interior/exterior, preferred grain orientation. Etc. ) i would love to see a video of a more detailed culling and orientation process. Loving the videos! Also, do you ever use cypress in your builds?
Very nice video. Dont know if it would help, for old putty I warm up with a heat gun till its pliable. Comes out nice and clean. Just have to be careful where the points are. Nice video.
Hey Steve- unrelated, but have you ever seen a way to prevent the sash lock on the lower from damaging the horizontal muntins on the upper? I’m working on a house that has a chunk of wood missing from every upper sash’s muntin thanks to the lower sash being lifted while the sash lock was in the “wrong” position. From paint layers, some of the damage seems to date back to the ‘30s.
hi thx for the window sill replacement. Next is scraping the side of the house. i have never seen that yellow scraping tool that is attached to the vac. Can you please tell me what that is?
It’s called a “ProScraper.” Brand name. I like it because it uses a 2” carbide blade. A competitor uses a 2-3/8” blade and the fact is that the extra 3/8” gets you about zero In added effectiveness, and about 2/3rds more cost in blade replacement. So I stick with this one.
it's like an advert for the metric system...
Not everyone follows that religion.
Just did the stubby pencil work over the weekend for my first divided light sash and this is a big confidence builder. A couple of observations: good to see you true to 1 1/2” tenons from your previous video; what wood (sapele is half the cost of pickled pine in Houston); I know you cut a lot of wood but a stop on your chop saw would be a good investment. Apologies to my HS English teachers for the run on sentences.
I’ve had a stop before but I took it off because it just ends up getting in the way. I spend more time fussing with it, setting it, unsetting it, moving it, resetting it, forgetting that I set it, having to unset it; then reset it ad infinitum. I just settle for a pencil line on the extension table instead.
These videos are great! What wood species do you use for new windows?
Right not it’s Spanish Cedar
I’ml a 27 year Cabinet Maker specializing in high-end kitchens. I’ve learned a lot from you. I’m a huge fan keep going.

Are you referring to shaper cutters? I looked on their website and didn’t see any router bits.
I think I’m going to have to watch this once again. I’ll probably better understand after I’m well rested. I sincerely appreciate the effort you put into these instructional videos for us. 👍
Cheers mate ❤
Do you contact people to maby help them. I purchased property with a mobile home on it and the idiots that had the place before me took most of the interior windows one they filled with bricks and I need to make the windows to put into the house. The actual frame is there just missing most of the windows please help with instructions
Cut it twice and still too short!
Great tutorial! Thanks!!
Yeah everything you need to know but where to buy the glass
You can always decant the paint into a dolly rather than ruin the whole can
Have been studying your videos on sash making over and over. Mainly because I have to fabricate four sashes from 1911 era. They are are extremely informative. Thank you for that. Can't, however, grasp stiles 2-1/4" wide and 1-1/2" tendons. One video you say overall width minus 1" is rail length. Final sash width 33-7/8", rail 32-7/8". I mortise 1-3/4" and same length tendons. Now all messed up. Am in Lakeland, Florida What did I do wrong?
Steve, I’ve been missing your content. Glad to see you’re back in front of the camera. Greetings from a fellow restoration carpenter in NH. Keep up the great work!
I seen an episode on this old house they sent a piece of molding to a company and they made knives to be able to make that molding.
Thanks for the videos! Saw you on PFC last year, had to make shash factory 🤣. Shop's looking great, keep em comin!
Cool deal hope the sash factory is working well for you!
Great job, what kind of pine are you using
Slick we have a $65,000. Shaper in our shop and can’t do it better. Good job
Thank you . I couldn’t do that before , I searched many videos in CZcams, and none of them could help me . Until I saw ur video 💜
What species of wood do you use for a new window sash? What are your thoughts on cypress?
What are you using? Sounds like a rusty nail
I still don't know whether it is best practice to paint the bed before setting the glass into the frame. here he is applying to a bare wood window
nice
Awesome setup! What sort of timber was that ?
