  • Scott and I went down to Fort Myers, Florida where a client is fixing up his old house to sell. He has a LOT of rotten window sashes, most of which have been repaired once already.
Carpentry in Window Craft might well be classified as the second of three major historic trade disciplines. The first is Joinery - the making of sashes, doors and other useful wooden elements. Carpentry is the art of putting those sashes and doors into service. The third historic trade discipline is Finishing - protecting and polishing the Jointer and Carpenter’s work.
In this video I demonstrate how carpentry is used to fit a sash into an opening. It’s a very basic video, nothing overly complicated. The viewer will see many of the basic skills and techniques used to execute it the task quickly.

Hey Steve- unrelated, but have you ever seen a way to prevent the sash lock on the lower from damaging the horizontal muntins on the upper? I’m working on a house that has a chunk of wood missing from every upper sash’s muntin thanks to the lower sash being lifted while the sash lock was in the “wrong” position. From paint layers, some of the damage seems to date back to the ‘30s.
