- I went to look at a project where the client was convinced that hers were original windows with single strength glass.
They weren’t. They were wood windows alright, but modern ones failing catastrophically.
I looked at all of them and gave commentary on why they failed so catastrophically.
It’s planned obsolescence. That’s all.
I don't usually sign in to you tube. I have switched to rumble, but this issue of windows gets me going. I have 160 year old windows on my Greek revival that are beautiful. I just had to repair one of the new Harvey pieces of crap that the previous owner installed. It is such a scam. Just because something is green does not mean it is sustainable. If your house is 150years old it IS sustainable. Think before you destroy it. Love your channel.
Thank you for spreading the word. I die a little inside every time I see someone rip out their old windows due to the replacement window industry's brainwashing. Thankfully I have all my original 1939 windows that are in pretty good shape, and I'm slowly restoring them. I installed Allied storm windows first so I can take my time.
Found your channel while searching to do a pstch job.I needed to repair a separated lower rail on a mid 70s Andersen window with a broken tenon. Probably a half hour job doing it with a plunge router, wood glue and pin repair. I'm 4 days in watching ALL of your videos, ready to rip all these modern windows out, I still haven't done the repair.
Keep the videos coming, it's too hot hot right now.
I hope you get the job. So you can help the owner to create a magic house. That house would be so nice with the right windows.
I agree. I have mixed feeling about it though. Hard part is that it’s in Tampa. If it were anywhere else I’d jump on it aggressively. If it’s not exactly the right kind of client, a job like this can go sideways in a heartbeat. I made a set of windows for a woman here, to put her historic house back the way it was supposed to be, to “replace” some replacements with authentic archetypal windows and this restore her home, but didn’t realize that she was a brutal flipper who had shady work done throughout. She got it the wrong side of the building inspector and he wouldn’t pass my windows. It was a knowledge thing. She was ignorant. He was ignorant. Her contractors were ignorant. In the end I was slapped with a lawsuit over the “unsuitability” of the windows I made her, even though I sold the exact same windows to another client and they passed just fine. Tampa is corrupt. This is in Tampa and I’d be taking a huge risk taking this on.

It's no different here in the UK. Modern copies of traditional windows are everywhere using the cheapest "timber/firewood" and using water based paints to cover over everything. They look pretty for a year or two (at best) and then.... What could possibly go wrong?
I wonder how much of an impact the paint color had on the life of all of these windows. Black pigment in the paint can heat up so much causing the wood to heat, draw sap, and warp. Most dark colors have black added to deepen the tone. Just like there are vinyl safe colors for painting vinyl siding, I imagine have vinyl safe colors for wood wouldn’t be be a bad idea. I know Sherwin Williams can make almost any color “vinyl safe” by using alternatives to black pigment.
I think on this one it’s hard to tell. However, whatever modern paint finish this is, it’s superficial at best. A thin, water based primer followed up with just an average paint and then never addressed again - recipe for catastrophe. I’m interested in your knowledge though.

@@ikust007 I wouldn’t say I have anything against double pane glass per se. Its an obvious next step innovation. What I’m against is the entire window assembly (that happens to include the double panes) that’s intentionally engineered to fail and put the building into a perpetual debt cycle. Since making a window that lasts longer than 15 years is of no benefit to the corporations peddling them, there’s no incentive to innovate a better window. Windows, like so many other things, have become nothing more than cleverly disguised cash extraction devices.
