'Little Devil's Chimney' Formed after Recent Bonchurch Landslip Isle of Wight
New Chimney Cleft Formed after Recent Bonchurch Landslip Isle of Wight
A short distance to the east of the Devil's Chimney at Bonchurch, a new 'chimney' has been created by the Dec. 2023 landslip. A narrow cleft has formed in the cliff with a wide entrance at the west end and a very narrow entrance at the east side.

Reservoirs in the Sea Level Gun Chambers Needles Isle of Wight
zhlédnutí 213Před 2 měsíci
Ground water gushing from a fissure in the chalk rock and filling 3 reservoirs cut into the rock. At the moment, the reservoirs are unusually overflowing with water and have become flooded, with the water level reaching the roof of each cistern chamber and flooding up the passageway. This is part of the sea level gun chambers cut into the north side of the chalk cliffs slightly to the east of t...

Thanks to Mr. IW Archive for his help in uncovering this feature and for hosting such a wonderful lunch, consisting of tasty sausages and bacon over an open fire. This feature has steps in one corner, a pipe entering in another corner and the sides and bottom are coated in a cement rendering. The north side is composed of in situ rock, while the other three sides a constructed of random rubble ...
Devil's Chimney Ventnor Isle of Wight Lives on in 2024
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 5 měsíci
The Devil's Chimney lives on ... only 30 feet below where it used to be! The whole section has split away from the land behind it and slid downwards, leaving a long gap between it and a sheer cliff that now stands behind it. The wooden steps have dropped too. I think the short lower leg that leads into the main steps part may be a little narrower, but otherwise it remains fairly intact. Long Li...

Typical British Auxiliary Operational Base, including escape tunnel.
zhlédnutí 100Před rokem
This shows the typical lay-out of a British auxiliary operations base. Essentially, a Nissen hut on a concrete base, which was then covered over and buried. Remains of bunk beds still exist and so does the 24 metre escape tunnel, made from concrete pipe sections.

Originally called Borough or Burrow Island, this small island is situated on a shingle spit that extends round off the mouth of Forton Creek. In the 17th century, a small blockhouse was built on it to protect Gosport along with Charles Fort. Later it was used as a burial ground and still later, as a military exercise ground.

Old Park Mill Dam Wall, Isle of Wight
zhlédnutí 196Před 2 lety
Sorry for the shaky video. Old Park mill no longer exists but the old mill pond remains as a very overgrown boggy area, bounded on the sea side by the remains of the old stone mill dam, under which the water has cut a narrow passage through sandstone. The top of the wall has remains of the old overflow shoot.

Georgian Drain Access Shaft, Isle of Wight
zhlédnutí 124Před 2 lety
Old drain access shaft, constructed c 1800. It is circular in plan and constructed of bricks. On each side, at intervals, individual bricks protrude outwards from the surface for half their length, to form steps down to the bottom to allow for inspection and maintenance. This shaft gives access to a brick barrel drain about 10 feet deep in the ground, running from a large house to the shore. Th...

So sad to see the destruction caused to this beautiful area.
Pity Ventnor still exists though
I love the do gooders telling you "its trespassing" and "you shouldn't be doing that" those people should get a life.Great vid mate
Pretty cool.
Wow! You can see that this is just behind the face of the old intact cliff to the right - just like the Devils Chimney. It's obviously a weathered-out vertical joint in the Upper Greensand. If there are no other similar open joints beneath the road, there is no reason why Leeson Road can't be re-opened. Your video provides quality information that the highly paid consultants don't have! Fantastic.
I used to freak out going through the "Hells Mouth" at blackgang... this is gonna give me nightmares 😀
Get a nice bench in there. A handrail too. Job's a goodun.👍
That looks sketchy
Do you know if this is still a possible explore?
Sorry. I haven't been there since 2016, but I think it's still there as no development has gone on at Holton Heath.
Well done for the video. It's good to know that the Devil's Chimney still exits so thanks for your determination in showing it still exists.
It's a pleasure, robertos! Thanks.
this is awesome
0:56 i bet if you asked the guide why this confluence is egg shaped, or why the smoothness of the overall surface area was maximised (with credit to the masonry) then there’d be no answer lol.
These videos are really really cool.❤ it would be so cool to see a camera go down there or something. I can imagine that the water would be really cold.
I know this video is old, but that video is so cool. The well water is so clear and can see everything. Great clip and channel.
This has to be highly unstable, take care out there
Tragic...... it was one of our most favourite go to places when visiting the island. I have one of the Wiggly plants from the forest, at that spot, in a pot on my kitchen window cill. Every time I water it I remember the marvelous Devils Chimney. Very brave to venture among it, but thank you as it has eased my own curiosity.
Glad it helped.
Incredible!!! I thought this had been buried forever!
You cannot walk down the Chimney Steps I would advise you for safety reasons or anyone not to.
Well done ! Excellent to know it’s survived …. 🙌🏼
How long ago do you think it was used last?
probably Victorian times.
Looking at the mature tree in the top corner that most probably wasn't there when this was constructed tells you how long ago it was constructed/used.
Credit to whomever opened up the site to expose it's features.
The Chimney was reported as lost - possibly because of H&S issues and the fact that all the steps have gone. This, of course, is rock / stone rather than chalk and soil which formed most of the land in the landslide so one would expect it to survive. It is also almost at ground level. I suspect there will have been fractional movement though. It's very daring of you to venture forth and I thank you for you endeavours in bringing us this great footage. Hard to tell from the footage as the Chimney was narrow at the entrance, but looks to be fairly much the same as you venture upwards. As I suspected - when you get as far as possible it's now a dead-end where all the land fell. I guess 'The Chink' further down will be the same - though I think they said this had survived anyway. I would have felt 'trapped' in there, for sure.
I've followed the story since the rockfall but had no idea it was basically still there...amazing footage but you're very brave walking in that incredibly unstable area!
Cool 😎
Devil's Chimney we always be there.
Freshly cut tree stumps, who is paying for that work and why? Great video thank you.
I noticed that
Wow I'm seriously impressed you had the cojones to get there! That part of the island is my absolute favourite, used to spend hours down there. Is the chink still there (the one that lots confuse with the Devil's Chimney)?
You’ve got us some minerals to go in there, great footage take care of yourself❤
So the steps are there just a lot of broken rock laying in the chimney?
I would advise you not visit the Devils Chimney or the landsilp for your safety please.
Extraordinary! Very intrepid to get there. I knew that the old cliff face and nearby features were still identifiable but didn't expect the rift itself to have have held on so well. It's all gone down like an elevator, but back-tilted - textbook rotational slide. What future rock features will there be to explore?
Is this one in the New Forest?
Yes. I've forgotten exactly where, but I think it might be near Beaulieu.
So there’s been some movement but still standing. Excellent
Looks like a great place to smoke the Devils lettuce
It is 🤙
Thankyou for this update on the Devils chimney! And your effort getting the footage🤟😎🤘
That’s fantastic news. I bet it was difficult to get to it. Thank you for the video. Amazing. Did you get to the wishing seat?
well that one looks easy enough to fire back up the limestone loading need looked at and the burners converted to natural gas and few motors replaced here ahd there then boom cooked lime coming out the business end ! let the profits replace the skins and office until the offices could operate out of some con exes the site would clean up as the limestone ore was processed what do they charge for number 4 limestone delivered in the uk!
where was this at?
Fuck no!
Looks alot like the 2 kilns I operate. The lime kilns I operate are for steel producers primarily. Concrete kilns are similar but different in regards to the size of the material entering and the product coming out. Cool video.
So, this is that one video that i found on Instagram that got out of context, huh
Looks like banksy coming out the doorway
Isn't that one of those "confined spaces" they warn you against where people can actually suffocate because there's no oxygen?
No it’s a tunnel kiln u morron it’s only a few dozen meters long at most idiot
I can honestly say a woman would never say she been in this in person
My dad was head chef there
Used go to oakfield in the 70s
