  • While approaching a cave to the west of the Neptune Caves at Watcombe Baye, Freshwater, Isle of Wight, I thought I could hear the distant sound of a sea shanty coming from the depths of the cave. On entering the cave, I found a lone member of the Brighstone Barnacles, giving a concert on his own from a kayak. You may know the Brighstone Barnacles as the foremost sea shanty group in the Southern region , based on the Island and starting to do gigs again after a Covid break. Great, I thought, a private gig all to myself! But I had arrived too late, for it was the last song and he promptly paddled away, ignoring my shouts of encore.
