  • The Western Outworks of the Western Heights at Dover contain two barrack areas on either side of it, called the North and South Casements. Access to the South Casements is straight-forward, but to reach the North Casements, a crouching scramble, sometimes a strenuous wriggle on your stomach, is needed through a very low 100 metre long drainage tunnel cut through the chalk. About a third of the way along, the two tunnels are linked by a short length of glazed drainage pipe, about 18 inches in diameter. It involves more hectic wriggling and shuffling to get through. If you're holding a torch and a camera, it becomes even more a challenge!
