Rat Island, Gosport, Hampshire

  • Originally called Borough or Burrow Island, this small island is situated on a shingle spit that extends round off the mouth of Forton Creek. In the 17th century, a small blockhouse was built on it to protect Gosport along with Charles Fort. Later it was used as a burial ground and still later, as a military exercise ground.

      Indeed they would not! But I did see a Gosport Moocheteer walking out across soft mud in home-made mud shoes, made out of square bits of plywood strapped to his feet! Hats off to him!
