Having just finished Monster, I interpret it way differently. Knowing Urasawa, his antagonists usually don't have any flashy reasons to be evil, quite the contrary in fact: Friend took over the world just because he had developped an inferiority syndrome as a child, having been refused by Kenji's group. So he wanted to prove he's better than them by being "friends" with literally the entire world. Johan's reason is also very simple, imo. Later in the story we learn that Anna/Nina was the one sent to the Red Rose mansion and experienced the many horrors there. Johan learns of these from Anna/Nina and decides to help her. To help her by literally erasing the events from history: - He kills everyone who took part in the experiment. - He burns down the Red Rose mansion. - He (likely intentionally, but it's hard to say) causes Anna/Nina such a shock that her memory of the events are blocked off. And that would leave the only living proof of the events - him and his memory of what Anna/Nina had told him. So the final step is for himself to die, as well as everyone who even remotely knows him. That way, Anna/Nina doesn't remember the traumatic events, and there's nothing and no one in the world to remind her of them. As if nothing has ever happened. He's not doing all this evil shit because he's just a naturally evil man who just wants to see the world burn. He's naturally evil, but he's doing it for his sister. That's why the ending is so good as well - Anna/Nina says she forgives Johan, but what I get from it is that she also tells him that she's fine with living with and knowing what happened to her in the mansion, which means Johan has no more need to erase it from history anymore. Anyway, that's only my opinion ofc, but having read Monster, 20th Century Boys and Pluto (and Billy the Bat is in my future list as well), this seems to me more Urasawa's style of writing antagonists. And that's why Friend and Johan alike are some of my favourite antags ever.

The quote which Bondrewd said is, in fact, refuted by children. Not by the ones in the story, mind you; everything in the Made in Abyss universe is the antithesis of joy, but the existence of children who, in their innocence, who have lived in nothing but joy, still pray, refutes Bondrewd. You could make the case that even they have experienced little bits of suffering, but if we are to count the very human condition as suffering, then... well, frankly, that's very religious, very Christian. The argument changes, and we'll be talking about Genesis and the Fall changing the status of the universe and its laws and composition likewise. Even still, the minor suffering of daily activity - the "tummy hurt" moments, the headaches, the cuts and scrapes, the back aches and so on - cannot hardly be compared to the pain which Bondrewd willingly subjects upon innocent children. It's literally a non-sequitur to justify the total annihilation of someone's personhood - a child's, no less - on the basis that one cannot feel grateful without pain. You can certainly argue that a person who experiences pain would appreciate joyful moments more; using a similarly Christian example, in the New Testament, Jesus went to the greatest sinners - adulterers, tax collectors, even his own persecutors - to heal and preach, not to happy well-off people. But just as he did that, he also exalted the innocence and joy of children above almost literally everything else, observing that their wholehearted kindness was the greatest standard one should hope to compare to. The Made in Abyss universe is, like I said earlier, the antithesis of joy, but there's a case to be made for how Bondrewd's "children" pretty much revered him and loved him, however undeserving of it he was. I don't know if the author intended that, but Prushka was pretty much refuting evidence to his claim. And of course, "progress". Mad scientists really can't be referred to as any madder than any other scientist without an objective principle for "progress". And I don't just mean "stable and unchanging" principle; you can say, "Progress is what gets us closer to a world where no one has to die", and that could never change and be stable, but it, alone, doesn't define progress; and it could be achieved in morally apprehensible ways. Thus, truly, the only thing that separates a "mad scientist" and a scientist without an analytic, philosophical, metaphysical understanding of his concept of progress, is consistency between his actions, and the logic of his beliefs.

The psycho kid in Gantz who kills the homeless guy with a bat is the most vile villain i’ve ever seen. It was hard to watch the stuff he did.

I love this because it's the psychological aspect of the reality of the character that's best way I know how to describe it. Is that very real chilling effect that these people could actually exist in the world. And they probably do. Great video love it

First time reading Usogui u think this is the best it can reach, what u don’t know is it gets even better when reading second or third time when u notice tones of foreshadowing and information dumping through the whole manga

I would love it if they go into his backstory. Before the mask. My theory is that his helpers are all just super fans who admire him and want to be literally him. Like those crazy fan girls that copy everything from their idols. His morality seems to be completely by the numbers like a robot. These people no matter their innocence or good nature should be piled up and suffer in the name of progress. It would be easy to argue that he might save 4 and kill 400 today and that the knowledge he gains will save billions as time goes by. Those who die no matter how little say they had in it are noble and loved as they are part of progress. Always seeing death no matter his own or that of someone else as just a minor cost to what will be unlocked for the next generations to come. Why should he feel sorrow or guilt? He does not see himself as a traitor, villain, torturer, or killer of children. He only sees himself as the driving force behind progress for humanity. All those other things needed for it are but the price he can logic away whilst completely embracing the humanity, promise, love, and potential of his victims, unlike most mass killers who dehumanize their victims so they can live with their actions. He can live with his actions just by reasoning it away for the greater potential good. He simply does not respect an individual's right to refuse.

If you're looking for something non japanese, there's vitiators by elytron frass. A somewhat berserk inspired Manga with art reminiscent of punk rock album art from the 80s, it's pretty darn trippy and absolutely insane. It goes pretty far with body and sexual horror though, which are both rampant in every single story, so yea, if you're squeamish about that, you should probably avoid it. It's more a collection of stories that are connected by the fact they happen in the same world after the event that begins everything, and by the ending chapters which somewhat explain some things. If you think starving anonymous is grotesque, a single page of vitiators will change your mind.

I spent so much time when this was first being translated explaining to people that the victims of Akumetsu were frequently real people.

I think this video convinced me not to watch Frieren. It’s not the style of anime that I’m super into. And while I’m sure I’d like it I probably wouldn’t think it’s all great. The animation looks great, but like he said if the visuals and world doesn’t pull you in the premise has to. And well while the covid gen anime fans seem to think it’s unique, me personally I’ve seen this done a ton, especially in manga. I mean I’m sure frieren does it better than most and that’s why it’s broke into the mainstream unlike most of the others with a similar premise. But the point still stands. It looks like a chill semi dramatic anime with good animation, that is probably good but not great. Like if I ever watch this it’s with a friend to spice it up. But it doesn’t help the series that my experience with the fandom is that they seem the type to fake their taste. The type that like “underrated” manga, they “like” “hidden gems” but they don’t actually like these series that much they just want others on the internet to validate them.

I love this manga. It needs more attention.

So he's of the saint-zealot archetype. Mindful conviction, albeit through the lens of a massively shifted perspective. Usually this mold is relegated only to side characters, Bondrewd shows how great it can be if given center stage. Usually a story and setting is already a thought experiment and characters are just narrative vehicles and embody moral stances to clash, but this archetype can be a thought experiment within a character (and come with the perks of looking stunningly bizarre), and showcase the interaction between thought experiments' conclusions. Results in more layers of fun stuff to mull over.

Usually when I think scoundrel, I immediately think of Reaver from the Fable series as the best example.

So basically this guy is a demon of Tzeench. I watched a 20 minute video about what this guy claims is the most vile villain ever in Anime and he's about as evil as your standard Tzeench demon.. Once again reminded that 40k goes harder than every other media.
