Working as a nurse in a military hospital during WW1 she became a convinced pacifist. She founded a club for female pilots caled "Ninety Nines" and was fighting for womens rights, independence and equality in aviation and in general. Roald Amundsen (Norwegian) Amundsen and his team reached the southpole on December 14. 1911, one month prior to his rival Robert Scott, who died on the way back in the Antarctic. Amundsen was better prepared for the extreme conditions, using sledge dogs and fur clothing, things he had learned from the Netsilik-Inuit on his expeditions in the Arctic.
