=======================================
The Corona program was a series of American strategic reconnaissance satellites produced and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Directorate of Science & Technology with substantial assistance from the U.S. Air Force. The CORONA satellites were used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972.

    I went to Houston Public Library, and checked out this exact Apollo Update on 8mm film and presented it to my PreHighschool class. I learned how hard those projectors were(keeping slack and where the spare bulb is) and it was enlightening to every person in class. This was in late 78 and already the Apollo Program was being forgotten. SPACELAB, and extension of the Apollo Program and hardware was Currently Orbiting. In 1974 our Moom Landings finished and America became not interested in the Historicness of what we did and were doing. It was a driving influence on my career choice, and the Apolli program should have had longer and more detailed science missions....as planned. But we went with STS and stayed in earth Orbit from then to now(sans Voyager and other Unmanned Missions). 1978 was 1 year feom the Historic Humanity Cahnging event of going to moon...and children and adults were already moving on. It is to me a shame the Apollo program wasn't extended and utilized as projected....but I understand why popular and political needs thought it was a wasted use of money that COULD have gone for other purposes. NASA budget at that time was a manageable expense, considering the VAST amounts spent on the Veitnam Conflict. It was the thought American citizens would bennifit from saving that money...but the Federal Government will wast our money on War and country's at War refardless.(ukraine). Were about to once again begin to venture to the moon with manned crew. We wasted 50 years. Everything cost more . We spend less currently on NASA in one year than we do on 1 day providing Financial Aid to other Countries and the War Machine of Contractors. America needs to better serve mankind.

    Great video. The only actual problem Apollo 7 had was Wally Schirra caught that cold and became an axxhole... CORRECTION: Apparently Mr. Schirra was suffering from nicotine withdrawal, which I've been through too, so I understand now. But he never flew again and most likely NASA learned from this... a 2 pack a day smoker can just not stop without some pretty serious side effects.

    Apollo 14 was the only Apollo Launch, the only Saturn V launch that I was at the Cape to see in person though from a distance of about 7 miles across the Banan River with some family. We made the trip from largo, FL on the west cost in the Tampa Bay area. I was home on leave from the Air Force from wich I separated in the summer of 1972. I was 20 yars old when I was at the Cape. that day. I took some disappointing pics with a 110 pocket instamatic. The pics were disappointing because of the poor quality of the film and camaer and because there was alow cloud layer in which the rocket disappeared seconds after clearing the tower.. TV viewes had the views of remote telecopic cameras that tracked the rocket above the low clouds. Even though the pics were disappointing, I am glad I was there that day to see that bit of history.

    we see at 26:00 the big benefit of Corona was first to achieve recovery of a space capsule, something very important if want to safely recover an astronaut from space. Everything from precise orbital mechanics math to heat shield and attitude control from orbit had to be developed from scratch. Interesting about the capsule that inadvertently landed in Norway was the idea for the movie "Ice Station Zebra." And how color photography was impetus for the Landsat program and info we had of Soviet rocket capability encouraged SALT agreements.

    • @FIREBRAND38
      @FIREBRAND38 Před dnem

      Not really about the benefit or "from scratch". Corona test flights didn't start until January of 1959. The US had been launching animals steadily into space on rockets since 1947. Two monkeys, Miss Able and Miss Baker were the first monkeys to survive spaceflight after their 28 May 1959 launch by the US. The first CORONA to be successfully recovered (as mentioned in the film) was _Discoverer 13_ from 10-11 August 1960. And notwithstanding the narration, Explorer I launched on 1 February 1958 was America's first orbital flight. Discoverer 13 was the first orbital flight that ended in a planned return to earth. So no, we can't credit CORONA with being too much help to doing human recoveries for Project Mercury.

    A few months before MA-8, there had been some nuclear warheads detonated in space as part of Project Starfish. Tgey caused artificial auroras and an EMP that took out part of Hawaii’s electric power grid. There was one concern that the charged particles and fission products would pose a radiation hazard but from the flight report, there was no significant radiation dose.
