  • Documentary about the Gemini X mission, entirely based on historical narration, mission audio and footage. The full mission is covered, showing training, Agena launch, Titan launch, Agena rendezvous, EVA, reentry and recovery.
    Gemini 10 (officially Gemini X) was a 1966 crewed spaceflight in NASA's Gemini program. It was the 8th crewed Gemini flight. During the mission, flown by future STS-1 Commander John Young and future Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, Collins became the first person to perform two extravehicular activities.
    Gemini 10 was designed to achieve rendezvous and docking with an Agena Target Vehicle (ATV), and EVA. It was also planned to dock with the ATV from the Gemini 8 mission. It would be also the first mission to fire the Agena's own rocket, allowing them to reach higher orbits.

    The Gemini 10 capsule was on display in an Auckland museum for a few years; it was shrouded in clear plastic panels, but I managed to squeeze my fingers through a gap and touch it. Quite a thrill for an eight year old space junkie. I seem to recall that Aldrin's Gemini space suit was there at the same time.

    So cool.... I find the history of the early space program just so darn fascinating! Both Gemini 10 and Gemini 11 used the Agena's engine's to boost the apogee orbit to 412 miles and 739 miles, respectively. An apogee boost by Agena was scheduled for Gemini 12, but was cancelled due to problems experienced during Agena's ascent to orbit. In all of my research, I have been unable to find the altitude that Gemini 12 hoped to boost to. Most likely it would have been higher the Gemini 11's height, but by how far?

    • @dandeprop
      @dandeprop Před 5 měsíci +1

      According to the Gemini 12 Press Kit, the intended apogee altitude for Gemini 12 after the Agena PPS burn was 460 miles.

    • @josephstevens9888
      @josephstevens9888 Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for the reply. Only 460 miles? If Gemini 12 did carry out an Agena apogee burn, I was hoping it would have been over 1,000 miles in height!
      NASA did a conduct study involved a Gemini docking with an uprated Agena that could propel the Gemini/Agena on a flyby mission of the Moon. This study was commission as alternative in case Project Apollo was delayed.

    Another great video with footage rarely seen before, all melded together beautifully with audio and still photos to present the mission in a level of detail appreciated by space junkies like me. Less than 4 years after this mission, and 9 months after the Apollo 11 moon landing, I had the honor, as a high school senior responsible for scheduling interesting speakers for our high school, of inviting and then hosting Colonel Collins as he gave his first speech to high school students in his new role as Assistant Secretary of State for President Nixon. For those interested in watching/listening to this space hero give a speech he was not accustomed to giving, I took the brief Super8 movie film I made of his introduction, along with the audio tape I made of his speech and a few still pictures and posted the resultant video at: czcams.com/video/7eMNu4oqExI/video.html.

    6:56 purge to 100% oxygen, what were they THINKING?

    • @ohheyitskevinc
      @ohheyitskevinc Před 5 měsíci +3

      This was prior to Apollo 1. But the issue wasn’t the 100% oxygen - it was the pressure inside and not checking the flammability of the spacecraft’s interior components. O2 was used as it was light to store and transport (vs O2 and nitrogen) and prevented the bends etc. They still flew with 100% O2 after Apollo 1, but at 5 psi which I believe is similar to Mercury and Gemini, not 16 psi as with Apollo 1, and outside air inside the spacecraft was purged after liftoff (removing the nitrogen). It was 100% O2 inside their suits too prior to liftoff - even on later Apollo missions. The purge Jack King references here is a similar purge used on other missions post Apollo 1, but on the ground, not after liftoff.

    Picture of China and Taiwan ( referred to as Formosa) at 29:09, you will never see a picture like this again, since this was 1966 its before Chinas opening up to trade with the world, now iit has severe atmospheric pollution and in such a short time so much change. Even on a clear day today China mainland is completely covered in smog anyone who has flown over china and looked out the window will be aware of this. These early space photo records should be used to demonstrate how much pollution is really in the atmosphere. Although open to interpretation the image is a warning of things to come.
