  • Tracking plane and ground TV camera views of the first space shuttle landing on April 14, 1981, at Edwards Air Force Base. The landing is shown with synchronized side-by-side video (with separate sound channels) from two cameras, and then in separate camera takes. Colors were corrected for consistency, and the audio was cleaned up.
AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to deinterlace the the 480i60 video sequence to 1080p60 HD resolution, restoring the original 60 fps. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.
Sound and image cleanup, conversion to original frame rate, AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.

Great times, great times. So much more elegant than a spash down.

According to previous videos, the T-38 pilots were Jon McBride, George Nelson, and either Dave Walker and Mike Mullane, or Dick Gray, and Pete Stanley. Confusingly, they label the latter two as the “Chase two” and Walker and Mullane as “Chase One backup”, so I can’t tell which duo is supposed to be in the second plane

Their return was late at night at Japan.
I was worried because some of the tiles had come off, but I was relieved when I woke up and watched the TV broadcast.

😲👍... Back to the days when human spaceflights were still exciting.

I think all those who have flown into space will disagree with your opinion. Space is a completely alien world for humans and will always involve a risk to human life. For me personally, any flight into space will always be exciting.

Fabulous job of reminding us of our not so distant history, thanks for sharing! I never knew Columbia was STS1. Learned something important here.
