  • Restored NASA documentary about the STS-26 "Return to Space" mission. This was the first mission after the Challenger disaster. The documentary focuses on the changes undertaken to the Shuttle Program.
AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample the video to full HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.
Sound and image cleanup, AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.

I covered the landing of this flight for a Houston newspaper. The spacecraft returned to Edwards AFB in California. Because NASA closed the roads into the base the day before, all the media had to spend the night in the desert just off the runway. I spent the time shivering in the back seat of my rental car. It was wonderful, though, having that front row seat for the Shuttle's return.

    Excellent work - thanks.
I remember watching the STS-26 launch live, and being VERY concerned about the amount of flame impinging on the base of the ET prior to SRB-Sep.

Yes, a series of sparks and flashes. I remember seeing that live on TV and my heart sank.

Myself and my friend John Wilson from Ontario met at a Cocoa Beach motel parking lot at 3am, then drove in his rental to await the gate opening at 4am to Kennedy Space Center with our access pass that I received from the NASA PAO Office. All vehicles were then escorted to the NASA Causeway, 5 miles south of the pad. We parked and listed to the loud speakers providing launch commentary. It was great! Too bad that Delaware North has to ruin the experience by charging so much to get into the KSC public areas, and in place for a launch. I liked it in the good old days.

Before STS-26, (as described in my comments on Retro Space HD's videos of the press conference of the Mercury Seven and the most recent video on Gemini XII) NASA had prohibited smoking 🚭 in all the NASA centers.
