  • Restored CIA documentary from 1972 about the Corona program, showing some launches, imagery and reentry capsules.
    The video was remasted to improve color balance and stability. AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample the video to full HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.
    Sound and image cleanup, AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.
    =======================================
    The Corona program was a series of American strategic reconnaissance satellites produced and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Directorate of Science & Technology with substantial assistance from the U.S. Air Force. The CORONA satellites were used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972.

    I am guessing that the X-15 material was inserted by Retro Space HD to fill in the "redacted" portions of this film.

    we see at 26:00 the big benefit of Corona was first to achieve recovery of a space capsule, something very important if want to safely recover an astronaut from space. Everything from precise orbital mechanics math to heat shield and attitude control from orbit had to be developed from scratch.
    Interesting about the capsule that inadvertently landed in Norway was the idea for the movie "Ice Station Zebra." And how color photography was impetus for the Landsat program and info we had of Soviet rocket capability encouraged SALT agreements.

      Not really about the benefit or "from scratch". Corona test flights didn't start until January of 1959. The US had been launching animals steadily into space on rockets since 1947. Two monkeys, Miss Able and Miss Baker were the first monkeys to survive spaceflight after their 28 May 1959 launch by the US. The first CORONA to be successfully recovered (as mentioned in the film) was _Discoverer 13_ from 10-11 August 1960. And notwithstanding the narration, Explorer I launched on 1 February 1958 was America's first orbital flight. Discoverer 13 was the first orbital flight that ended in a planned return to earth. So no, we can't credit CORONA with being too much help to doing human recoveries for Project Mercury.

    What's with the x15 narration?

      Yeah, hear the same thing. from 3:51 to 6:08, it's X-15 related narration, but video might still be CORONA related

      and not only that, but that the plane shown is a U2

      I am guessing that part of the film was "redacted" and replaced by Retro Space HD with the X-15 material.

    I'm not fan of these AI upscaling. Looks like LSD Trip. I prefer if you would just renoise, balance colours etc, sharpen image slightly, with original resolution of the footage. It's not like it's more crisp any way. Just shrooomy.
