I'm currently racing with Spec Corvette, which is a growing series based on the C5 Corvette (1997 - 2004) that I absolutely love. I post race video from the tracks that we visit, like Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, Auto Club Speedway, Willow Springs, Chuckwalla, and Circuit of the Americas. I also make how-to content around building and maintaining a Spec Corvette.

Spec Corvette Corkscrew Battle
One of my favorite moments from the last race at @WeatherTechRaceway_LagunaSeca. Side by side through The Corkscrew with Marc LaCorte. Didn’t even come close to making contact. Big high-fives and a hug in impound after the race. That’s great racing!

Spec Corvette Build - Trackspec Headlight Cover Brackets

In this video I install a set of Trackspec headlight cover brackets to replace the stock headlight buckets and remove 18 pounds of weight from the nose of the car (less the weight of the aluminum brackets themselves, so maybe 14 pounds net). These have more adjustability than the Electron Sport brackets that I installed in the other car, so I was able to complete the installation without having...

Here's a quick one on the installation of Trackspec Fog Light Covers (block-off plates). These plates do double duty preventing unnecessary air from entering the engine compartment and providing a little more structure to the bumper (they've earned the nickname "bumper protectors). I did not install these on my other build and found that the tabs on the turn signal housing would often break, al...

Finally! It's been a 14 months since I broke my wrist and I've been struggling to put up a win ever since. I started in P2 and managed a nice over/under when Mark ran wide coming into turn 2, then got lucky with traffic and managed to open up a gap. My ABS module took a dump half way through the race, so you'll notice the tire smoke as I locked them up a few times. Had to back up my brake zones...

Nice work. Did you re use the factory upper shroud? I’m thinking of deleting mine not sure if it will affect the cooling.
Some spicy driving there boys! Nice work by all!
Thank you!
bad ass! i got a little turned up watching that!
Wow!
What do I do with the air hose? I plugged the hole with a grommet like you said. But I have the hose just hanging around there.
Are you going to disable the AIR system? If so, you can remove the air pump, etc. Spec Corvette AIR System Removal czcams.com/video/zpP5dauYVOA/video.html
@@joshc1017 I didn’t plan on it. Do I have to with the zip tie conversion?
@@shawn1394if you want to keep the the air system functioning, you can either extend the hose over to the original port, drill a new hole in the opposite side of the air box to move the port, or install a small cone air filter directly on the hose.
@@joshc1017 thank you so much for the info. I appreciate you!
Legend mate, this just helped me fix up my intermittent HVAC power issue on my '97 .. cleaned up contacts and gave them a little bend and bam, now powers up immediately on acc switch ! hugely appreciative :D NOTE - the green cover on the switch is holding the 4x delicate contact parts together, be careful taking it off as mine sprang all over the floor and i had to figure out how they went back together, not too tricky but still
Right on! Glad to hear that it helped!
what is the part number for the steering wheel puller tool?
Well done!
good racing!
Thank you! I had the will power to go light on the WhistlePig this time. LOL
Great driving Josh. That Avian team has strong running cars. I had a hell of a time passing them in my C7Z during the SpeedSF challenge time attack at Laguna.
Thanks! Yes, they are well built. Tim is a pro driver and AP gets a ton of seat time, too.
What a move in traffic to secure P2! I like how you stayed patient and consistent throughout the race, ready to take advantage of the opportunities.
Thanks! It was hard to back out of that first side-by-side with Marc but it was better to not let Tim and AP get away from us.
Congrats-Nice! Wish Barber ran Spec Corvette,
Congratulations on P2 Josh!
I would love to know which bad words were going through your head when you came up on the rental Miatas!
I think the announcers referred to them as ‘flies”, cracked me up. I didn’t have any issues with them though. They were all quick to point by and make room.
I'm surprised, I thought you were running a rear Gspeed wing but it looks like yours isn't but man it looks like a ton of fun!
I am running the spec spoiler from G-Stream but no wings in Spec Corvette. That little spoiler produces quite a bit of extra downforce; so much that it took a while to figure out how to rebalance the car when we added it a couple years ago.
yes sir!
Really enjoying your posts detailing your Spec Corvette experiences. If you don't mind my asking, can you give us some idea what you pay (just to the event organizers, including track access) for running at Laguna Seca. I've tracked there several times so I'm familiar with all the other associated costs. Thanks in advance and keep the great videos coming!
SCCA charged $702 for the double race weekend (Sat and Sun total).
@@joshc1017 Very reasonable; about what I paid last 2-day event there with Speed Ventures. Thanks for the quick reply.
Looks like a blast. I need to figure out how to get into this. I live not too far from VIR.
Do it! It’s the most fun you can have legally!
@@joshc1017 what's always held me back is being a moron mechanically. I've never turned a wrench really. Well, that and space for a trailer of some kind. I could keep a car in garage, not sure what I'd do as far as a trailer. No space on my property for one, at all, unfortunately. For finding a car, where would you start? Look for a C5 on auto trader or similar, seek out someone who has already built one, something else?
I found mine on Craig’s List and built it in my garage at home. If you get one with low miles, it’s just a matter of getting it caged and bolting in some parts. If you want a turn-key car, you can find one in the Spec Corvette racers group or have a builder like Phoenix (they’re expensive but good) or One Mo Time Racing (James Davidson in FL) put one together for you.
Every C5 driver should sub to you! Keep up the great vids! I’m doing similar spec transformation with my C5
Thank you! I appreciate the encouragement! Good luck with your build!
@@joshc1017 thanks!!
Wish i could get one of these! Thank you for the videos, helped me a lot with the traction control and other buttons as well. I dont have time for speccorvette racing but i do track days at willow springs with my C5.
Glad they were helpful. Hope to meet you at Willow Springs one of these days!
Any issues with the O2 sensors?
No issues at all. The rears were tuned out and the widebands I added are working great.
@@joshc1017 okay awesome thanks! I gotta get that done
Cool channel I just subscribed! Looks like I need to watch a lot of your videos 😂. I have a turbocharged Corvette that I need to put a cage in and seats so I can fit in it with a helmet. I'm trying to do my homework on what to get. I'm finding out real quick it's hard to find seats that's fit in these cars and even harder if you're tall, I'm 6'3.
Trackspec makes a “tall guy” version of their cage that might be worth checking out, although the AMT ultra low seat mount may be enough. The two in combination will definitely give you the clearance you’re looking for.
@@joshc1017 thanks for the info. I am definitely going to check that out 🙂
Thank you for the video
You’re welcome! Hope it was helpful and you were able to resolve the issue.
I had a LS1 92 Camaro chuck a belt. wasn't aware they liked to YEET themselves at 4,000 rpm. got the Kaytech tensioner. not sure how I managed to race for a full season without a belt going byby
What year is your C5?
It’s a 2001
Good video. Thanks!
Highly recommend the Tick Tool! Also if it’s a new slave, crack the line and MAKE SURE the throwout bearing is fully seated. 9/10 you will need to ADD to get into the clutch manufacturers specs. I didn’t do the above and thought I needed to TAKE AWAY material, but the throwout bearing just wasn’t fully seated. Save that 2k labor charge for more parts! Good video
Excellent explanation!
Nice work man! 👏🏽
Great vid. Curious, why not adjust the toe on turnplates?
Where did you get the .125 - .200 air gap tolerance?
It’s information provided by Tick when buying their slave cylinder with remote bleeder.
Can I assume you no longer have the parking brake cables and such in the car?
Yes, I removed the parking brake when I converted to 2-piece rotors in the rear.
Does it drive much different than stock couplers? Any rougher ride or more vibrations? Thanks.
I don’t notice much of a difference but I was careful to buy a well balanced coupler and rotate them to find optimal runout. I’m also running solid motor and diff mounts, spherical bushings, coilovers, etc. I hear/feel every bump and vibration.
Does the billet couplers throw off harmonic/vibrations to the torque tube drive shaft and if so how reliable are they.
It’ll destroy your pilot bearing if you don’t keep the runout within spec. That said, if you keep the runout low the whole assembly will last much longer than rubber.
Is there a maximum horsepower limit allowed?
Yes, 380 at the wheels is max for our class.
Great video. Quick question. I heard that if I swap the EBCM , ill need to have it reprogrammed to my car. If I send it to. Get repair, does it still needs to be reprogrammed?
I’ve swapped EBCMs between my 2001 race car and a 2004 donor car without having to reprogram anything. There’s no reprogramming required if you send it in for repair or swap for the same generation.
Doesn't the excess air help cool the engine and get into the intake?
Not enough to offset the downside of that excess air exiting under the engine compartment. Air exiting under the car reduces downforce.
@@joshc1017 Had to be a reason why GM designed it that way though on the Z06, but I suppose people found it to be a flaw.
lots of fishtailing
Thanks for posting, I woulda never thought to do this and found out i had 3 bad injectors. My shop was East coast and was $28 an injector so right on with your shop. Also side note for all be sure to change your fuel filter.
Nice! That should make a huge difference!
@@joshc1017I have a question why don't you put racing fuel injector in the c5 corvette
The Spec Corvette rules require that we run stock components unless specifically called out, so we need to stick with the OEM units. I’ve spoken with my tuner about it and the stock injectors (clean ones) run at about 80% of max, so they’re not a limiting factor the way the cars are built.
@@joshc1017 oh ok thank you
@@joshc1017 what is your favorite racing game that got you into racing
I would think the suspension control arms would be shot peening.
That'd be the day I'd fuck up my C5 like that! That looks like shit and destroys the resale value. Along with those dumb looking headlights.
Hi! Do you remember how long your oil lines were, Tracspec no longer offers them.
Sorry, I didn’t measure them during installation.
Looking at doing the same setup how’s yours holding up what temperatures are you seeing?
It gets up to 265 in a 40 min race on on 100 degree days. I’d love to see oil temps about 30 degrees lower but I think you’d need a stand alone cooler pulling from a front opening to see anything close to that.
I’m interested in this class but can’t find any information. I have a C6Z06 with H/C/I and full exhaust I’d love to race. Did you start with HPDE?
Yes, I started with HPDE, then went to licensing school after about a year and 20 track days. I like the HPDE path, personally, but you can go through licensing school with SCCA and others without HPDE.
@@joshc1017 I found your class is just for C5 Corvettes. Is there a class for other generations.
There’s no other Spec Corvette class for other generations (that I’m aware of) but you could run in SCCA T2 or NASA ST 2 or 3 (depending on power, etc.)
@@joshc1017 thanks, man.
How would this make it easier to pull the trans? I’m on my second one already, curious.
If you’re running solid motor mounts the engine doesn’t tilt back as far (unless you loosen them), so it’s easier to get proper input shaft alignment when reinstalling without the rear tub in place. With stock mounts, it doesn’t matter. You can get by without removing the tub, though.
I looked at doing this mod on my 2002 Z06 but from what I can see the two lower grill openings between the brake duct intakes direct air up to the air filter housing area. That would be cold air from outside the engine bay. I'm not sure if cutting a hole in the rad housing to take air from that area will be any cooler that what is coming in through the front grill openings? I would think you would be taking air that would be used for cooling the rad (lowering the high pressure area in front of the rad) to use for combustion. Does anyone else see this?
glad to see some thought applied to a modification based on nothing more than uninformed internet gossip, that ignores that air is constantly flowing when the car is moving. Or considering the very high possibility that the team who developed the LS 1engine was perfectly capable of designing a high function air intake system for street use. . the original design spreads the incoming air more evenly across the filter to better utilize available filtering .
@@richardelliott8352 My observation has nothing to do with the internet and everything to do with researching this possible mod for my C5. It simply appears that the air box does get cold air from outside the engine bay via the grill openings. It's simply what I can see. No need to get all worked up about it.
Based on AFR readings at WOT (dyno vs on track), I do believe the mod flows more air. That said, I would only do it on a dedicated track or race car. I have to clean the air filter at least every other race weekend. That would get irritating if it were a street car.
Oh sh*t oh sh*t, I made it... Oh sh*t oh sh*t, I made it... man what a class in how to keep the car at the limit lap after lap. Do you instruct?
LOL - that’s pretty much what was going through my mind. The ABS failed early in this race, so every brake zone was a little sketchy. I don’t instruct much any more, but did for a couple years when I took a break from racing.
What hubs did you use? thank you
For this build, I bought the SKF hubs from TPS Motorsports. For the other build, I got them from Phoenix Performance. Both are good sources. I do recommend going with the longer studs. Makes changing wheels easier.
Does this make the car louder?
Yes, the turndowns make it a little louder and the sound isn’t quite as nice. Generally not a problem on most race days but it’s a good idea to have an axle-back ready for tracks with low sound limits.
Hey Josh, I was curious if you happened to measure the wheel center to fender ride height? I usually measure bottom of wheel to fender then subtract half the wheel total height to get my ride height. The frame to floor height is usually a bit trickier like you said.
I haven’t used the fenders for it, figuring there could be more variance there… but those jack points get fairly deformed with time so either should work just fine. You’re just looking to get it in the ballpark before fine tuning with corner balance anyway.
