Take a Walk Through the Garden | Early Season Rhododendron Tour 2024
Take a walk through the garden and enjoy the early season rhododendron blooms. We've had some rough weather and few frost damaged buds but these plants are tough and I fully expect a grand display over the next 2 months.

Could you use this method on any tree and any size cutting including the entire base of a 10-inch diameter tree trunk and all the XL branches??? My neighbor says he will be forced to cut down 2 12-15' tall Aspen trees and transplanting the enrire tree is way too risky and $$$$$ for me.

I’m trying this at this time. I have 8 cuttings in the cups…I used straight course sand for 4 of them and a mix of peat and perlite for the other 4. All growing conditions, etc., are the same for both groups. They are now into the second week and leave are still green and healthy looking….it will be interesting to see the results.

Almost every backyard grower that I see on CZcams uses some type of shade cloth for their seedlings to reduce the temperature. I noticed you never do and I’m wondering if it’s because you live in a zone that doesn’t get that hot or if you found a way around it or maybe because of the plants youpropagate the heat in the bright sunshine doesn’t bother them as much just curious. The sun kills everything I try to propagate unless I shade it so I’m just wondering.

Mike, if you see this... I'm on a really low budget and just have some miracle gro and Epsom salt. What would you use as a ratio per gallon for outside potted plants? I'm using 10 gallon pots for a large fast growing sub tropical Andean mountain species of cactus that I keep outside mid April to October.

Thanks so so much for the long teaching video! Two questions here, how long do I need to transplant them from the propagation to the land of my yard? And how long time do I need to cover those cuts for moisture? I started my propagations probably at the early of April here and they already sprout a lot 😅😅 I’m thinking if I could open the cover before the hot summer coming and let them get fresh air. Ofc I will do just like what you did, open the lid bit by bit. 🎉🎉

Coco coir does not always work, some has too much sodium and the quality varies quite a lot. It can root cuttings but once the root comes out they may struggle to absorb nutrients as the coco coir can’t hold any of much nutrients because of the salts. My favourite is pine bark fines - it’s quite similar to a 50/50 mix of peat and perlite - holds moisture but allow air to flow through. It is also slightly acidic (ph ~5), and many journals that you can google suggest lower medium ph helps in rooting of cuttings.

I grew up in the 1950s and walked to school along a sidewalk lined with gorgeous American dogwoods, pink and white. Sadly, many American dogwoods succumbed to a blight during the past 30+ years, and garden centers only carried Kousa dogwoods -- not a very pretty species, imo. Anyway, there are still some traditional American dogwoods extant, and I spied two of them, a white and a spectacular pink (like old pink brick in color, not the gaudy pink of today), outside a store that has been closed since 2019. I took a small branch from each tree, and will follow the excellent directions in this video so I can propagate the two magnificent dogwoods. Wish me luck!

One thing you should do at this stage and that is to snip off the end tip, that will make the plant send out more side shoots, if you leave them at this stage the plant will grow up as a single long stem. Chris B.
