  • Take a walk through the garden and enjoy the early season rhododendron blooms. We've had some rough weather and few frost damaged buds but these plants are tough and I fully expect a grand display over the next 2 months.

    Hi Mike- thank you for taking the time to put this out- we all have missed you! Take your time-it's not a cut and dry process-find and take joy when you can...allow yourself to feel...this goes for your wife as well as those two beautiful daughters. Today is my dads birthday (lost him 2 years ago) that old farmer would have turned 80 down here with us. But what brings me solace is knowing that he is with HIS MOM & DAD-brother, sister, nieces and nephews that went before him celebrating in heaven. Boy did they know how to celebrate, didn't even need a reason! lol Your dad is with you as you go through this...please know this, one day I can tell you how I know...but I do know...they stay with us until were ok-then they come back when we call out to them. In our heads of course, that would be weird if we did it in public-prolly lock us up! ha! My thoughts have been with you and your family...take care- Tonia

    Thanks Mike. I love Rhodies but, my water situation is somewhat limited. I just can't justify a major irrigation instillation running on my neighbors well. Are big tree Rhodies more drought tolerant?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před měsícem +1

      It’s best if you can find a shady spot that’s at least 20 to 30 feet from the trunk of a tree. That way it gets the shade but not the tree roots sucking all the ground moisture up. Mulch deeply after you plant. You shouldn’t have to water as much. Yes, larger tree like rhododendrons seem to do well with less water once established.

    Mike - thank you so much for starting my day with a beautiful tour! Our gardens here up the river from you are starting to flourish. My creeping phlox are just full, and that is so beautiful. We have had little rain this spring, very different from the last few years, but a little hose watering and things are looking nice. The new forsythia we propigated are just the nicest view. I was a little skeptical about the small rooted basically twigs I plante last fall, but with more than a foot of new growth this spring, winter had the just right effect on them.

    Thanks for the walk-through, Mike. That last one is one of my favorites. The two-tone, large, smooth petals are so beautiful. For some reason, the word “parfait” comes to mind when I see that one. The deep red variety…striking! And some of the lighter ones were so delicate looking. I still say you should be hosting events there!

    Thank you Mike!! So good to hear you again!! Hopefully we will again very soon, and perhaps even get to see you as well like before the hiatus! Looking forward to it!! Question; I moved to the East Coast, zone 7b. nowhere near any brackish water, but definitely lots of rain and clay. I have both sun and shade. Which rhododendrons would you suggest for out here?? I don’t see many of them, and owners don’t know the names when I do see rhodes, but since there are some at all it gives me hope!!

    • @MikeKincaid79

      There are rhododendron species that grow wild over there so you should be able to find a few at least. Just look up rhododendron species on the east coast and they should pop up.

    I love your garden tours! I am not sure of the names of my rhododendrons as they were here when I bought my place. Love them all.
    I have a whole row of a pastel purple 12-15 feet tall. One is growing awkwardly due to a overgrown tree we took out a couple years ago and I hope it will fill in now that it has some light. I also found a plant tag that the bark had grown over…it was unreadable.
    Could you tell me the name of your rhododendron at 16:19?

      In the video, I called it 'Big Sam x Lem's Cameo', which is the parentage. The given name for that plant or "cross" is 'Naselle' if you're looking for it at a nursery.

    Hello, Mike. Your gardens are positively stunning. Because of you, I started my very first rhododendron propagation project, last year. The cuttings seem to have survived the winter. I do have a question, though. I have read that rhododendrons are extremely toxic to humans and pets. I've never seen you wear gloves and see how you love smelling their fragrances. 😊 How terrified should I be? Many blessings to you and your family and may your heart heal from your loss. My prayers are with you. I started a memorial garden of flowers and plants to help me through grieving after the passing of my Brother, Father, and Mom. There's just something in the process of choosing their favourite colour or flower or bush that brings joy. ❤

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před 28 dny +1

      Thank you so much Darlene. I'm getting there slowly but surely. As far as the rhododendrons, I've been working with them for close to 19 years and I'm still here to talk about it. No third arms either! Hahaha. No worries on the toxic part unless you're planning to eat them. I touch them, rub all over them when pruning, and never had a problem, not even the slightest rash. Interestingly enough, honey made from rhododendron pollen is called "mad honey". It's hallucinogenic and is harvested in regions like Nepal, where rhododendrons grow all over and are native to the area. They use the honey for spiritual and cultural purposes. Fun fact.
