    Traveling in the spring does amaze one when you experience a totally different plant zone that is radically warmer / colder / wetter / drier / higher / lower than your own. Even places close by can be amazingly different. I'm in a cold pocket that is higher in elevation than the surrounding area, and so my trees don't leaf out until about two weeks that the city just 25 minutes away does. Other zones also produce in gardeners what I call "zone envy" - that is, a jealously that people in another zone can grow things that you can't - or at least not without radical adaptations. I think most plant lovers lust to grow plants better adapted to locations two or three zones above or below them. Like, I'm in zone 7b, and would love to be able to grow fir trees like you have. I can grow blue spruce, but they won't get very big and I must baby them in the perfect spot. I REALLY want to grow paper birch, but know they won't survive long-term (ask me why I know, LOL).

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před rokem

      I hear ya. I'm always dreaming about building an arboretum to create a tropical greenhouse environment and grow trees and plants that I otherwise couldn't. The grass is always greener on the other side.

    • @philipatoz
      @philipatoz Před rokem

      Mike, I'm in the Southeast - in South Carolina. But several months ago, I was in snowy, frigid Massachusetts and went to a tropical butterfly garden with all kinds of equatorial plants - it was surreal to see that there and in winter. But the desert in CA is the most different place I've been in a long time - insanely dry and very warm (January), but with palm trees in places, but snowy mountains in the distance. And I've never seen any place with so many rocks.

      @MikeKincaid79  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, you guys can use all the rain you can get. Last year in early May, we took a 2 week road trip down through California on 101. We were headed to Phoenix to see family. Our favorite part of Northern California was definitely the Avenue of the Giants. I'd been through there with my Dad and brother when I was 11 years old but didn't appreciate it as much then as I do now. I could definitely live in that area. My other favorite part of California was all the grape vineyards along 101 between San Francisco and San Louis Obispo. When we were going through there last year we couldn't believe how far ahead you guys were too, haha. It was still raining back home and cold. I'd definitely like to make that trip again in the future.

I am really looking forward to seeing their enormous ferns! The fronds are at least 15 feet long. They have different varieties of banana trees, mango, avocado, orange trees, coconut trees and more. They even grow their own pineapples and Dragon fruit. My son and family moved there in June, almost 2 years ago. We sure miss them, but we will be visiting them every year if our health is good. Because of our animals we can't go together, so I am taking my daughter with me. She homeschooled my grandson while he was here, so she deserves a vacation.💜🌴 They have a guest house, so that will save us a lot of money and we will be able to visit more often. My husband went last year because with his bladder cancer we thought he should visit first. Great news he is now cancer free, but he has a cancer that comes back eventually. He loved it there and wants to move. I don't like the heat, and I don't want to leave the rest of my family. I'm sure I will love all the plants and scenery, but just don't want to make the move. Take care Mike and please tell Shellie hi. Sorry, for such a long message. I haven't forgotten your Trilby Rhodedendron, just health issues have interfered. I will make it a point to get it to you after I get back from Hawaii. So sorry for such a long delay!! Best wishes to you and your family in building your dream home!!🌴💜

      I loved your area, David. Full of friendly people who are obviously proud of their city. It was so clean and inviting down there and we loved the weather. We were staying at the Hyatt Place DFW, so probably pretty close to you. Ally and I agreed that we liked Fort Worth better. Like you said, it was more laid back and had a smaller town feel. If anyone recognized me, they didn't say, haha. I've had a few experiences where people recognized me over the years but not this time. Once, I was down in Oregon with my family and we were at a nursery. I started talking with one of the ladies that worked there and we must have talked for 10 minutes before her whole face expression changed and she realized it was me, hahaha. That was a fun experience. Anyway, loved your neck of the woods.

      @@MikeKincaid79, if you ever decide to visit L.A.(lower Alabama, lol) give me ample notice, I'll meet you at the airport & you can wander the homestead, till your hearts content. You can't imagine what grows wild out there that would cost an arm & a leg at the gardening stores. If you see something you want we'll dig it up or take cuttings, pack it up & ship back to Washington. BUT, if you thought DFW was hot, I recommend early Spring or late Fall. Even I try to bypass July/August. Cheers 🍻

      Man, Scott, I was amazed! I really wanted to come see you but it just didn't work out this time. We went down for a piano concert for Ally and did as much as we could in a 2 day span. I originally planned it as a road trip and was going to come back up through Arkansas but Shellie vetoed that one since it would take 2 weeks or more.......and then there's the house build, lol. I couldn't believe how far ahead Dallas was in their spring. That was the one thing that amazed me the whole time. I just kept thinking, I can't compete with this, lol. I'm not kidding when I say that the season was 2 months ahead of us.

    What is that place they call, Stitch Work? Is it saplings that they weave broken branches around? We still have snow here in northren Minnesota. I wish it looked like that here. Makes me want to move.

    “This place is two months ahead,” but we’re also two months hotter and have a head start on bugs! 😅 “Man I’m jealous! I cannot compete with this.” Don’t be jealous, our veg plants fry in the sun, some won’t grow, tomatoes stop pollinating, and a good portion of my tomatoes have had mosquito bites. You don’t see the down side at those gardens.

    That was a nice surprise ,I didn't expect to see this until after the house was done. You say they're a few months ahead of you and we were one week in to nice weather then had the blizzard of a lifetime ,lasted almost 3 days I was not impressed So seeing all the flowers and trees was a nice treat I thought maybe some butterflies inside the greenhouse Wouldn't you love to have a greenhouse like that one filled with all those orchids and other tropical plants I'd be in my glory 🏵️🪷🌺🌳🌴. 🇨🇦🦩
