- We finally got our paint and we sure do love it! The colors are perfect for us. Interior and exterior are both done, lighting got installed (well, most of it), and the garage door has been installed. We can now seal up the house from critters! Shellie's happy about that. Oh yeah, and the insulation was installed in the attic space. It's starting to feel like a real home.

I think it was an excellent strategy for you to take note of what colors on houses that you really admired in your neighborhood. It's so nice that the people living in the house a couple miles away who you asked about their house's colors were agreeable about sharing that information.
It's great to be able to seek input from a lot of other people the way you have but in the end, the bottom line is what do YOU like in the way of colors and materials and everything else. It's fun and fascinating to be allowed to come along with you to watch the process on building, designing, outfitting and lighting of your new home. It's absolutely lovely what you have done.

Mike and Shelley, the paint colors you chose are beautiful and timeless. As for the indoor lighting, my opinion is that the more natural daylight lightbulbs (4,000K) are the way to go. Two years ago, I changed all the lightbulbs in my house to bright daylight bulbs, and I love it. I had noticed that photos which I took at family get-togethers, all had a yellowish look about them. Years ago, we didn't have lightbulbs that gave us a true daylight look, so all of my old photos (taken indoors at night) look yellow to me... and they tend to make everyone look anemic. Good to hear your opinion on the lights, Margie. I really agree and hearing it from you makes me want to change them out even faster now. I really do like the 4000k. We tried the 5000 but it made things feel too cold. 4000 is just about perfect.

I think you guys are nailing it! I totally agree about the lighting. Switching to a 3500-4000 is the way to go. I dont like 5k+ because you start getting a real sterile hospital vibe. Too blue. Hope all is well. The house is looking great.🎉
I agree about the sterile cold look of 5k plus. I think I'm pretty settled on 4k.
Ahhh, yes, the browns look great! Splashed up dirt won't show up so easy. Superb choices!!! White trim is very pretty. All the out buildings browns blend perfectly. Good job!!!

I am glad that you went with the white ceiling. You had mentioned that you were considering having an accent wall in each room. This is an ideal time to do it... BEFORE they work on the trim. LVP!... One less thing to worry about, with spillage or any kind of moisture. I agree with not having all of the building match... I would look kind of like a "compound" if they did. Looking beautiful overall.
Haha, it sure would look like a compound. I hadn't thought of that, lol.
I 100% agree with wanting the brighter lights. My electrician was trying to talk me out of it but I insisted. I want a lot of light. I even put in 3 sky lights that work really great during the day in rooms with no windows like a bathroom and laundry room. They make a huge difference.
We love natural light. Originally there were several skylights in the plan but we just couldn't afford it. I know it's a little harder to do later but we have to save for that one at a later time. I have thoughts of putting in a dormer in the front of the house, between the 2 peaks, that is just one large window that opens up all the way down to the kitchen ceiling. Imagine all the light that would come in.
Also agree about the bright lights. Just been installed in our new kitchen. They are flat panels (not big) but they do dim, or go warm if you want that. Great when needing good lights for cooking etc. Best lights we ever had.

Hey Mike, everything looks great. A light brown, contrasted to a deep brown, framed
in white trim. I'm visualizing a few different plants (mostly deep green foliage) with
various colored flowers just popping against the lighter colors of the house. Add a
lawn and it will be stunning. Nice job.
I hate shadows and my eye sight isn't the best to begin with and ceiling lights almost
aways seem to be behind you. The light however can be augmented with table lamps in
almost any room but the kitchen. We had a remodel of our kitchen a few years back and
I brought that up with the contractor and he suggested under cabinet lights, along with
canned lights in the ceiling. Best advise I was ever given. If they can still work that in, you
won't ever regret it.
Question/comment. I don't see any closets or a good place to hang coats and/or kick off
muddy, snowy, wet boots/shoes near any of the entrances?

We've got lots of can lights and under cabinet lights. Also, lots of cabinet and storage places, just no cabinets yet. You'll see how much storage once we get all that in.
I’m glad you and your family are able to do this. You’ve worked very hard and you deserve it. Every one has different taste in color. Only personal opinion, but it makes me want to cry, for me it is so depressing and sad.

Hey Mike, sorry about your family issues. You're a good guy with a strong family so keep on, there are good days ahead.
On the house, Make the choices that are best for you, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks... Unless you're flipping. I've made different choices when I've built, but it's my house and really like it. You'll feel the same about yours when your done. There'll always be some items that you second guess after living with it for a while, but that's just how it goes.
Thanks Steve. I didn't feel like announcing it on video but I don't want anyone worrying about me either. The family stuff has to do with my dad. He passed away on August 30th. It was unexpected and sudden. I'm doing better now but we put everything on hold with the contractor for a bit. Once the paint and garage door got in (they were in the middle of all that at the time) everything just stopped. It's kind of nice having a little peace and quiet around here for awhile. We're in no hurry and I just needed some time to grieve for my dad and figure out his affairs. In fact, now that things have slowed down, we're considering just dragging this out even further so that we don't rush anything and end up with something we don't want. I'm currently working on my own with getting all the underground downspout drainage pipes finished up and ready for gutters. Then I'll work on the hearth for the woodstove. I also want to make a change to the toilet (move the sewer pipe over a few inches to make it more roomy in the toilet area). Once I get all that done then I'll probably call the contractor back. Thanks for your concern and I appreciate you being here.
So sorry about your dad Mike. That's terrible. I'm glad you have a supportive wife that is there to help and is on the same page. My SIL sent me a note after an unexpected sudden major loss in my life earlier this year that said "you're not responsible to keep others alive forever. It's just not how it works". While I was/am still broken, it helped me get past the "would have, should have, could have" guilt spiral. It gets better, you never forget, but the memories become less painful.

Its looking great! The colors are perfect and i love bright lighting. I love ambient light but as an adjustable option in certain areas. Lighting can easily make all the difference. Great work. And the garage door is worth every penny! Such a beautiful home for your beautiful family!

I love agreeable gray; this is what we have in our house. i love it because it goes with grays or tans, you will love it.

I like it! Both the interior and exterior colours work really well and I'm sure you'll be glad you went for the white ceilings because it really brings more daylight into the rooms. I know what you mean about the lighting colours, the way it looks and feels depends at least in part on the colours of the walls and floor the light is playing on so just go with your gut. Personally we like the 3500 throughout, when the sun goes down we have the cozy yellowy warmth and the lack of blue in the light that helps your brain begin to relax into the evening. Sounds like you have much more energy though!
I completely agree about the lower softer tones of light in the evening. We're thinking about keeping the 2700k lights everywhere but changing the kitchen and bathrooms to a brighter light.
Actually, it's your house and you don't need to justify your paint color choices. You're the one living in it and its your dream!! Good on ya! Your home is beautiful!

I just filmed a few update videos about my plants. I also started a new one about rooting a certain plant that I think will be fun. They'll all be out over the coming weeks and months.

I totally agree with the 4000k lights! It's more like daylight. I don't like the yellow look for lighting. The home looks amazing! The outside colors are beautiful 😍. I wanted a gray color home color but your colors are very beautiful! Look forward to seeing the flooring you choose!

I understand, it's stressful to build a house and all the details, and you know what, who cares if we like it or not, you guys have to like it, you will live there and you are paying for it so don't even bother! Hugs to you all ❤️ Mike at night you are supposed to have warm lights so you can sleep, but when you will not be able to sleep you will change the lights back to these 😂 if I have any blue lights it's an instant wake up for me.

I think ya did a great job doing the whole house so far can’t wait to see what ur going to do for the floors that to me is the hardest part because of the wear that they have to take from everything getting moved around and just the everyday travel on them and u want them to last for a long time it is the part of the house that gets the most abuse and a lot of people don’t realize how much the ware and tear they get well thanks for the update you really have a beautiful house and ur going to have a lifetime of memories to be made it’s a brand new start god bless ya all thanks again for the update
Thanks Gary, we love how this is going so far. There's one thing I regret a little bit but it's minor and can be changed. I need to move the master toilet over a little closer to the wall so my knee isn't cut off by the door, hahaha. Easily fixed. The wear on the floor is our biggest concern, especially with a large 110 pound German Shepherd. We think we may have found our flooring that gives a good amount of wear and fits in the budget.
I just subscribed to your channel. Love all the planting tips. I'm glad you did not go with green color for your house. With all the green surroundings plus I'm sure you are gonna do a lot of green landscaping around your house, a green house would just fall flat and not stand out. Great choice on the colors. I love it.

Looking great. The lighting thing hits a little close to home. I prefer a darker room and tend to keep blinds closed and maybe a lamp on, my wife come behind me and opens every blind, pulls back the drapes and lights it up like Las Vegas. So over the years I realized my option doesn’t matter so maybe I will comment on the paint colors. I like them
Haha, sounds good. We agree with your wife, the lights need to be bright and curtains opened, lol. You don't have to tell her we said that. Don't want to stir up any trouble in the home, hahaha.
Perfect. Window facings and baseboards same as ceilings, keeps everything fresh . Oak toned floor goes really well with agreeable grey adds a touch of warmth , cosy in the winter . Maybe carpet in the the bedrooms and walk-in closets , creamy tone but not on a yellow hue .
Yes, we planned on doing all the window and floor trim in the same Extra White color. Should look really sharp once the trim gets in and painted. We were originally thinking carpet in the bedrooms but are now thinking about doing LVP flooring throughout the whole house. We still have time to be persuaded otherwise, haha.
@@MikeKincaid79 we found that price for price that carpet v LVP was the same. I do like it soft under the toes in the cold mornings unless you have underfloor heating.

I agree with the “daylight” lighting. We have done this in our older home … using floor and side table lights in the living room (the original owners built the house without ceiling lights in the living room).
We put ceiling fans with “daylights” in bedrooms and kitchen.

For closet systems: the container store has some reasonably priced shelving, racks, drawers etc. way cheaper than the big name closet companies.
Also: love the colors. You can add greens and other colors using art, bed linens etc
That's a great idea about adding other colors through linen and other items. I have no idea when it comes to decorating. I'll have to tell Shellie that one. Thanks for the tip on the container store. For now (due to budget) they are just going to put in wood dowels to hang clothes on. Our ultimate plan is to have all kinds of built in closet shelves and dressors.
Someone that would give someone grief over the color they chose for their house . Well ,to put it nicely is just rude!! We were on a budget as well and we chose no crown molding and went with a cheap ceramic tile and laminate for floors. I don't like our laminate but love the tile. we went to a large carpet store and had binding put on a large piece of( like indoor outdoor carpet ) for our area rug in living room and it has lasted way longer than the cheap throw rugs we used to buy at home depot. I love all the colors you all chose (we have a lot in common) and smart way to find them ( way to go Shelley). Im with you all on the lighting. So happy for you all.

Yes , and it is a piece of low carpet brown, tan and cream specks. Had it for about 8-10 yrs and looks practically new.
Everything’s looking great, totally agree with you on the cooler lighting temperature. LVP is a great option, holds up well with kids and pets but it’s especially easy to clean. Looking forward to seeing the next update!
Thanks for the LVP vote. We're nervous about picking the right flooring and it's good to hear it holds up to pets. Our German Shepherd is 110 pounds and we need something that's tough.

Beautiful color choices. I use natural daylight bulbs because I suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in the winter months in New Hampshire. They make a difference in light and my mood from day to day. Your house is going to be wonderful when finished.
Yes, I feel the same way. It gets so gloomy here in the winter. Washington state breaks the record for more cloudy days than any other state in the union. Not sure that's a record worth getting excited about, haha. In our current mobile home, I went through and put daylight bulbs all over the house. I definitely want to change the bulbs in the new house.

On the lighting - the whiter the light, the more it can interfere with natural sleep patterns. You want the warmer light at night if possible.
We may keep the warmer lights in the bedroom and living room, but change them just in the kitchen and bathrooms.
Regarding the can lights on your rear porch, if you paint the trims the same color as the porch ceiling, they will blend in & not stand out. The trims are the rings that go around the bulb openings to give a finish look.
That's a nice idea. I kind of like the contrast of the white and brown color but I'll have to give your idea some thought.

Very simple!
Lvp is water resistant but cooler in touch. While, laminate is less water resistant but warmer.
That's what we're finding as we talk to flooring people and look at the materials. I think we've settled on LVP due to the water resistance and then we'll use throw rugs in certain areas.

Wouldn't that be nice. I think I'm going to do a border or plantings all around the house. Lots of different hydrangeas and black eyed susans and tulips and dafodils and...... It would be so cool to have plantings that bloom from early spring to late summer!

Yes I like the colours They're just different enough not to put your house into the category with all other houses I have grey in my house too but mine is a definite grey For flooring I suggest the vinyl plank It's inexpensive and you won't have a problem with water spills and also shifts with the house if you have that going on with your house but don't get a dark colour it shows every bit of dust dirt and cat or dog hair It's easy to clean just a damp mop is all it needs to keep clean you can add vinegar when you want to disinfect the floor . It's easy to install only takes a day or two for your size of house Now to choose a colour and there alot of different colours to consider Have fun and don't let life's problems get you down To me it looks like you got well more going for you than against you Please accept my Condolences Stay Happy 🇨🇦🦩
Thanks Liz, we're recovering. I should explain before people's minds wander too much, lol. My dad passed a few weeks ago very suddenly and unexpectedly. It was a hard hit to my brother and I. We're getting there one day at a time.
You don't need to explain anything to me or others This is a personal time for you and if you want to keep it quiet that's up to you Don't live your life around us We get to know what you want us to know and we shouldn't expect more than that You have had a tramatic event so take the time you need I find talking to the animals give me some peace of mind (really they help cause they don't talk back )🐓Give Henry a hug for me if you can hug a rooster ok now I'm rambling but when you become retired you have a tendency to do that Like I said before Stay Happy see you when I see you 😁🇨🇦🦩
Very very nice and very classy too - the colours work really well. The lighting is always a problem but I though all LED lights had the adjustment on the kelvins... I will watch out for that for my build. Bet you can't wait to tear down that mobile home....👍🏻

Glad to have backup on that 2700k color. I was starting to think I was crazy, lol. We're doing better with time. I didn't feel like announcing it on the video but my dad passed away very suddenly. It was very rough for a couple weeks but I'm better now. Thanks for the kind words.

I love the grey. I call it a 'greyt' grey. 😊 It does make the house look spacious, warm and relaxing. I love the whites and lighter colors and the dark exterior color as well. I fell sleep before I could say more….yes change out the 2700 k. Personally I like to be right at 3500k. I use to co-own a lighting showroom and was a designer there. I remember when LED’s changed the entire world of lighting.

Hey also put the dining room and living rooms lights on a dimmer …it’s not expensive to it. Are the recessed lights retro fits or an entire self enclosed unit? It’s very easy to change a retro fit can. And under cab lights in the kitchen are a must these days. Layer the lightings as much as you can afford to do. Nice to create a “mood” in the rooms at times.
Thank you for your condolences. It was a pretty hard hit but I'm recovering. As far as lights, I'm not sure of all the terminology but it sounds like retro fit cans. They installed metal cans up in the ceiling and then came back later and put the led fixture into them. I can pop the fixture out and put new ones in. Pretty cool! We did get under cabinet lighting (a must for Shellie). Glad she mentioned it because I have no clue, haha. The living room, dining room, and kitchen will all have dimmers but the electricians didn't have all the dimmer switches on the last visit. They come back out one more time to finish installing our dining and foyer lights, fans, air conditioner, 1 30 amp rv plug, and the rest of the outlets and dimmers. We even got some usb ports in some of the switches throughout the house.

Nice! There is a full length exterior southwestern facing wall where the sun room can later be built! No exterior door in that wall though, unfortunately. Nice house Mike, and I do like the paint colors!
I'd love to have a sunroom. I've thought seriously about building one on the other side where the garage man door is. If the roof was full of skylights the sun would hit them all day. I just need to hit the lottery now!

I like all of the colours inside and out,all that matters is that you like it, glad that you had white ceilings it makes a lot of difference. Your right about the lighting. I'd go for the flooring of your choice, we have all carpet apart from the kitchen that has vinyl flooring that's not very hard wearing. Sorry that you have family issues and hope that everything turns out ok. Good luck with everything.

Flooring? I'm a tile girl. I found natural slate on clearance for 99 cents and bought all I could and saved for the installation. What a pita to clean but i love it lol.

I love tile and would love to put that in throughout the whole house but just can't afford it. Maybe someday. The family is doing better. Maybe I need to have a talk about what happened so everyone isn't worried.

Haha, that's Ok, there's a little hippy in me too. I just can't bring myself to do a video about the family stuff so.... my dad passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly. It was pretty hard on me but it's been almost a month now and I'm doing better. Thanks for your concern and thanks for being here.
@@MikeKincaid79 I'm sorry for your loss. Sudden loss is hard to come to terms with. Only time can ease the pain and unfinished business. Everyone grieves differently - there is no right or wrong way. Muddle through it and sooner or later you will get back to normal. We'll still be here.

Love love love all the colour choices!!! 15yrs ago we put down laminate, looks just like hardwood planks. It has held up to a beating from dog and cat nails beautifully. My complaint now is the noise it started making about 5yrs ago or so. Dont know if its our humid Ontario 🇨🇦 climate to blame or an installation issue but its getting worse over time. Maybe just a question to have on your radar.
Good to know, I appreciate it. The flooring guys have all talked about noise and they always say it's due to the subfloor prep. It has to be sanded down perfectly flat. Nothing is perfect though so maybe your floor problem is due to the age of the floor and the padding underneath wearing down. If you didn't have a problem before, I'd be thinking that's the most likely culprit. Good to know how well it held up for you as that is our biggest concern with kids and a large dog.

I really need to get on that again. We've missed some of the ripening fruit due to life circumstances and mainly how busy I've been with this house build, but I intend to get back into the plants and orchard videos once this is done.

I love all of the color choices. It’s really coming together nicely. Unlike hardwood floors, LVP can go in the bathrooms and would be such easier care than tile. Looking forward to the next update as always.
We did plan on going with tile in the bathroom. What do I need to know about tile? Help? lol
@@MikeKincaid79 We have a lot of tile flooring. We like it a lot but do not like cleaning the grout. It gets dirty, even though we don’t wear shoes inside. If you go with a darker grout you’ll have it made. Lighter grout: Uggghhhhh.

I agree vanity lights in a bathroom, closet lights and kitchen - 4k for sure. It can add some strain to the eyes, so it’s nice to dip warmer for the bed and living rooms. Once you get a few decorative lights in (table lamps, for instance), you can brighten back up the living room lower down at a social level.
Yes! We are going to change them. I just need more light and intensity, lol. And yes, Shellie gets all the credit on color choice.
