Yes, I'm addicted to propagating plants. Every spring it starts itching and you start looking for plants to take cuttings from.
I'm feeling the itch.
As you said Mike , it's really easy to get addicted to planting and gardening, and your videos are of great help.
Happy to help with the addiction 😂
While I've been completely unsuccessful propagating anything but figs, your encouragement keeps me hoping.
Throw a pothos cutting in water and you'll double your history of success overnight! Go after the small successes first and build an understanding of the environment that the cuttings need to thrive, then move to tougher plants.
Hey Mike, I paid the $47 for the 3 videos & built the Nearing frame per your specs & instructions. It’s working great, except for one little problem. The ants are burrowing up into the sand. Any suggest for a remedy?
Also, how can I access those videos again? I’m ready for the one about marketing now.
You can still access them back on the website. I don't have ant problems here so I haven't seen that one, but I would use a weed barrier under the frame if that's the case.
Thank you very much Mike for these miracle propagation tips. I want to ask how many times and duration you öpen the cover and let the fresh air vantilation
I don’t open on a schedule. In fact, it really doesn’t need to be opened. There’s enough of a small crack between the glass and wood for good air exchange.
Hi Mike, what fertilizer and how often do you give your cuttings while in the frame?
They sit in the frame for 1.5 years from the time I take the cuttings. Here's a video about the fertilizer I use: czcams.com/video/F5BRZwFEe50/video.html
@@MikeKincaid79 Hi Mike, thank you. I have some rhododendron, camelia and azalea cuttings in my frame from last summer (February in Chile, where I live), and I accidentally lifted one rhododendron. To my surprise (and big joy), it was completely rooted, so I potted it into soil and hope it will survive. The others are still in bark, but I promised myself to be patient and not to touch them until winter of next year. So the fertilizer issue seems really important. It's been so great to follow your videos and see how roses and lavender have so easily rooted. Thank you sooooo much for that.
One of my Rhododendron was basketball-sized.
Without a cold frame, I found laying a low branch on the ground and covering
it with a brick would produce a new, well-rooted plant the following Spring.
Same with Azalea and Hydrangea.
Yep, that's called layering, and is a very useful technique to multiplying the plants you mentioned, especially hard to root varieties.
Do you sell Ro cuttings, I’m in Texas and can’t find cuttings like the ones you show. Please let me know. Cindy
I'm not really set up for shipping them yet but at some point I'll do that.
What is temperature in the winter, in that frame? What is the lowest temperature there?
40’s F. In the frame. It occasionally dips down into the teens outside but not much and not for long. Most of the winter here is in the 30’s and 40’s
Great channel! Does your right hand have Dupuytrens disease?
Nope, although it looks like it. I actually had a bad accident in 2019, in which I cut up 3 fingers and almost cut off my pinky finger. It ended in surgery and 3 months off work. I made a series of videos about it if you’re interested. Here’s the first one and there’s a link in the comments to the rest: czcams.com/video/T-laf6zqlCw/video.htmlsi=lhUuroHWs5F79ilH
Hi Mike, right now is end of September, I started cutting rhododendron last month, so far, the cutting still look green but not rooted yet . Do you think it is too late for them to grow roots now? I am in Toronto. Thanks Mike !
Not too late. Mine take months to root. Do you have bottom heat going?
@@MikeKincaid79 I don’t have it Mike, but I think I can put the cuttings inside my house? Or close to my house? Right ? Thanks Mike for your answer!
Great content as always, Mike!!
Thank you Hannah!
The paid videos are definitely worth it. All the info is available on this channel for free, it will take far longer than 6 hours to find and watch them all. Well worth the $47.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. I've been thinking about adding more to it, just need to get through the house build and free up some time.
Mike do i need to dead head spent flowers or is it not essential
I dead head young plants to encourage new growth and flower buds, but once they get planted out in the landscape I back off of dead heading simply because I've got way more than I could handle.
@MikeKincaid79 ok thanks for the advice mate 👍🏾
Mike. You ever use the gel rooting hormone? That's what I got right now and am doing up some hydrangeas in my propagation frame right now. Just wondering if you've experimented with that versus the powder. I'm up in poulsbo WA.
Yes, I've got some clonex gel here now. I've used it a lot and like the results. I use if more for softwood cuttings just like you're doing with the hydrangeas. The hormodin 3 powder is a little stronger and works better for semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings.
@@MikeKincaid79I can't buy Hormodin 3 . If store have it, they don't deliver to Serbia. And there is not any stronger hormone , for sale, here, but for softwood. I need just a small amount of it. What can I do?
Mike I really want to get into this - I have an area west facing sheltered ideal for this but I'd like to know which month is ideal for which general plant family. June/July/August(rhododendron). In Bavaria Rhododendron is prized highly whereas would you believe is is a weed in Wales UK and they actually burn it where it has escaped?
August is the time frame that I take all my rhododendron cuttings. You should definitely get into it! This is a great hobby or part time business that you can take through your whole life. Plus, it continues to add beauty all around you, every year. I know rhododendrons are considered invasive in some areas, but in a well maintained private garden, they are absolutely wonderful!
@@MikeKincaid79 Oh Mike - here in Germany the "hormone rooting powder" you Americans (and I think Brits) take for granted is like Gold Dust! In normal garden shops - nope! I was down in a huge shop in France 2 days ago and oh man we tried French for "root" is "racine" but the stuff didn't look right! I have heard you can try with old bananas in pots - what natural method do you recommend?
As always - love your videos! I only had one rhodo survivor from 2021 season that is struggling to live but almost every cutting from 2022 is still doing well in my tote!! Thank you for all your advice - it's been fun trying to grow from plants I already have to landscape more of my yard! Here's hoping 2022 batch continues to do well!!
Sounds like you're improving each year and that's all you can ask for. Glad you're enjoying it. I can imagine your landscape will become more beautiful over time!
Do u have a video that shows about the soil u mix up for these
It's just finely ground fir tree bark. Here's a few videos I've made over the years: czcams.com/video/jQM9OE1G2Ug/video.html | czcams.com/video/eLXHy4A4-xk/video.html | czcams.com/video/RSPLOLNXTD4/video.html
How do you take hard wood cutting
Mike, I have a shade loving plant that I received from a friend a decade ago. I haven't been able to identify the species
Can you assist?
Sure, post a pic on our Facebook group and tag me in it.
What's your fb page name?

Hey Mike, I am from the northwest. Grew up with Rhody's. I now live in GA . I have herd only curtain types of them grow down here. Can you help me out with what I can have down here? Please and ty
It would be tough for me to give you recommendations for GA, since I'm unfamiliar with the climate down there. I'm sure there's info online that can be found about it. Rhododendrons will grow in a fairly broad range of climates so you should be able to have a nice selection. One thing that I recommend people do is visit your local nurseries. They will usually have a supply of rhododendrons that will do well in your area, or be able to steer you in the right direction. I do know that azaleas are a big deal down there and grow very well.
How to get small rhododendron from your home?
I’m not selling any at this time but plan to open up in the future.
I'm getting closer to considering growing rodies ☺
I’ll keep putting the pressure on 😂
@@MikeKincaid79 I went to town to wal mart and they had little baby hydrangea and rhododendron. So cute!
Hi Mike, loving the videos. My wife says I’m like you…addicted to rhodo’s haha. The six I stared with are now 25!,. I’m very happy that I followed your advice on propagating them. I know I’m here in the UK, temperatures quite different but I’ve still had plenty of success!! Just about to build a new propagating frame!! Many thanks dear friend. Graham 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
That's so awesome to hear! I think we have very similar weather to you guys over there. Washington state is known for having more cloudy days than any other state in the U.S. We have about 9 months of cloud cover and a constant light drizzly rain. It's actually pretty dreary for many months of the year.
@@MikeKincaid79 didn’t realise you were that similar for the weather Mike. PS, loving your new house build!! Take care Graham 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Gde ih prodajete? Pozdrav iz Srbije. Prelepo
I sell them wholesale to a local nursery.
Went ahead and purchased a membership to your propagation videos. Looking forward to lots of little Rhododendrons for our nursery. Thanks Mike!
Hey thanks, I appreciate your support! Get the propagation frame built and you can't go wrong. I designed it to be completely fool proof and not have to worry about it most of the time, while it quietly roots cuttings.
I love plant propagation of all kinds, but those rhododenderons are extra special, I love you videos they give me the extra excitement to go out and root everything. Thank You and love to all of the family💖💖💖
There is something very special about this plant. And like I was saying, there's a reason that they're planted in just about every major botanical garden around the world. Love to you and Petra!
Plant cloning is a good addiction, and you are a good teacher.
I appreciate it! Thanks.
I am going to have to take cuttings off of my neighbor's beautiful pink rhododendron this fall and try this.
For sure. It never hurts to try. Depending on the variety, you may do well without the bottom heat.
Thanks!
Thanks so much! I appreciate your support.
All right now it's starting to sound like a children's book title Behind Those Gates lol
🤣
Hi Mike, great to see you! Awesome video! Have a blessed weekend! Hugs to you and your girls 🤗🤗❤️
Hugs!
Mate
You are the plant guru 😁,👍
That's one heck of a compliment. I appreciate it Joe!
Congrats on hitting 400k subscribes. You have come a long way from where I found you, years ago with 1k subs.
Haha, thanks! Yeah, it's crazy how much this channel has grown. Sometimes I don't understand why it's grown so big because I literally do all this myself and have no fancy editing team. So, since you've been here a long time, over 6 years I'm guessing, am I missing anything as I evolve? Did you like the videos better back then or now? Is there anything you'd like to see differently? I'm always looking for ways to improve and keep people happy with the videos.
Thanks for another video, Mike. I'm grateful for all you share. It's teaching me a ton!
Right on Rob!
Awesome. I will join and purchase the videos but where do I get my cuttings?
I've tried to offer a cutting selling service in the past but it's so time consuming. I recommend buying a plant that's already growing on its own roots and then you'll be able to take all the cuttings you want.
With 300 varieties, I’ll be broke ha ha
How’s those Croton‘s coming along? Ha ha I have so many I just don’t know how to root them. Maybe I should play around with it also. Maybe try the water, the same way I do the roses, and maybe just sticking it in the ground. I’ll let you know my results, you let me know yours ha ha.
Absolutely fantastic video again, thank you for sharing and a BIG thanks for all your efforts 👍👍👍🙂
Thanks Terry, glad you enjoyed it!
You have created a beautiful oasis!
Even though I have had no success here in the south (rhodies grew beautifully up north), I am off to buy an 'Everred' tomorrow. I can't resist.
That's a nice variety. Make sure to plant in filtered shade.
Love your videos, Mike.
Our rhodies are in full bloom, right now. I wish the blooms would last all year, right up to the snows. Hey, I can dream.
We are now doing some hard work reclaiming a piece of our landscape - digging and clearing and smoothing and seeding it with meadow grass and wildflowers.
So far, I can propagate roses. My attempts at layering rhodies have not succeeded.
The wildflower meadow sounds wonderful. Keep working on the rhodies and you'll get there. It's more patience than anything.
Not much in this world more satisfying than cracking open a propagation frame and seeing new growth. I’m diggin it.
I’ve always been under the impression I should nip off flower buds on rooting cutting, preserve that energy for roots. Not necessary with rhodies though, I take it?
Yes, typically you'd want to do that, but I'm not typical, haha. I like to see those little blooms.
Good video have a great day and the house is looking great
Thanks Osvaldo!
Good morning Mike this is Leo fron texas good job mi friend keep going on god blessed you
What's up Leo!
Always thank you Mr Green thumbs.
What an amazing lesson! So inspiring! And the results are in front of you! ❤️🙏❤️ From Canada!
I love showing all the results. It gives people hope and shows them that everything I do here is very possible for them too!
I like your Beautiful Garden with the wonderful collection of rhododendron ........
Thanks Mario!
Good evening dear, sir maike very long time to see you in vlog your all gardening tips very informative thanks
Hey, good to see you again Mustafa!
Those cuttings look great!

thanks Mike!
Awesome Mike!! Yes, toot your horn. Love your videos. Thanks
I wish I could use a cold frame over the winter ☃️ but of course Saskatchewan is a tad too cold for that . I actually thought the rest of your Rhodes were in bloom and you were going to show them to us Guess I got fooled. Maybe next video . I'll be waiting. Have A Good Day 🇨🇦🦩
I’m still working on that one. No pressure, right! Lol
It's not as though you have other things to do 💫 No pressure at all 🤩. 🇨🇦🦩
Lol
You are amazing, I follow you continuously, please tell me how important it is and what we can use to disinfect the plant pieces before we root them ?
Thanks !!
I don't do anything special to disinfect cuttings, just rinse them with water. Some people like to make up a 10% bleach solution to disinfect but it's not necessary.
Mike, has the girls picked up the same propagation bug as their dad? If yes, what has become their favorite thing to propagate? I try to get my children to get the bug..... but so far, NOPE!!!
They love watching what I do and are starting to get more curious. Both of them took a cutting off a pothos and rooted them in their bedrooms so they could have their own plants in their rooms. My oldest has rooted a store bought onion and some Wandering Jew plants. They're very interested and dabble in it. I don't push them though. I just let them watch me and I wait for them to have the desire to do something. I think that's a better route to getting them hooked. You know how kids are, it has to be their idea, haha.
Mike just like you mentioned I can go on the internet and learn how to do it for free, ??always liked your videos, thanks
Glad you enjoy them, Gene!
Mike, I think I've become infected with the same incurable ailment by following along with your addiction. Who's idea was this anyway? Lol! I hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend. ~Margie🤗🌱💐
Haha, happy to infect! Happy Memorial Day weekend to you too, Margie! Glad you're here and glad you're enjoying your spring.
Cool, awesome 👌 video, brilliant umbrella style plants 🪴 👌 😀 👍! Good job, Mike!😉
