This is brilliant! I actually watched this before I bought my XKR- and still haven’t driven the J gate!😆
Thanks :)
JLR executives should consult people like you who love Jaguar and know its uniqueness.
😂 Yes John....that is a Area that I know well... because of the hydraulic lines. Thank you for the effort you always put into making the videos. 👌🇬🇧
Me too. Nothing like a green shower to educate yourself further about the X100.
Thanks again John. My right rear quarter light is drooping a bit so the info on the adjustment screws is appreciated, as always. Cheers
Hi John. Would the fob locking aerial be the same position in the coupe.
John I have the same problem with the drivers door. It won't work with the remote but does with the key. When you try with the remote I just clicks, any tips. Charlie from Dingwall.
Manufacturing variation, you mean POOR quality parts.
Yes, that is my thought too.
I like your videos . Is your car colour Mistral Blue ?. Thanks ,,,, John.
Thank you @hanskurzen . No mine is 'Aquamarine Mica' Only offered on the earliest cars 96 67 and a small number of early 98's
Another great video, thanks John
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks, John. My biggest fear, when having work done on my car at a garage, is that they don’t know how to get trim off without breaking it. Have you discovered how to do this through trial and error, or have you consulted any manuals on the vehicle? Also John, can you recommend a trim removal kit that is fairly universal for these vehicles.
I recently replaced my trim piece on my 1998 XJ8, which is similar to this. It takes a bit of work, but the removal of the trim piece to check on the straps is very simple, as you show, so definitely worth checking out so you know that it is all installed properly. One easy thing to check, as well as the existence of the seatbelt material straps, is that those straps go OVER the metal frame that the airbag sits inside. If someone has done a replacement incorrectly, they may have installed the trim piece incorrectly such that the webbing us under that frame, which will mean the airbag will be restricted if it deploys. Final point - I reckon disconnect the battery even to do this check. Better safe than sorry and it is easy to do. Make sure you know your radio code!
That's an admirably clean engine bay.
Hi John - I'm restoring a rusty XK8 but fallen at the first hurdle... Ive lost the key that starts it 😢 i have another key but it only unlocks it and doesn't start it. Do you have any idea how i can sort this?
There is a tiny transmitter capsule moulded into the plastic handle of each key so if the other key is non genuine or was cut by someone who didnt know they had to read the code from the original and teach it to the new one, it will not start the car. There is a code reader built into the trim around the ignition keyhole. As soon as it detects a key it starts to try and speak to the chip in your key. If it doent reply it wont start. Jaguar will be able to provide a genuine key from your VIN number, but they may charge you more than you anticipate. If you do get one from Jag. Take it to a good automotive locksmith to get a duplicate made with the right chip in it. Your 2nd key will probably cost half of your first.
Jaguar's future is ZERO if they follow through with the ridiculous plan of going all electric, Electric is NOT the future, it was tried in the past and failed and it WILL fail again, fortunately I will not be here to see Jaguar's full demise.
Hang on tiger. You are going nowhere soon! Anyway. They might stuff it up real quick😉
John: I wonder if the cutout was in anticipation of adding the hardware for a hard tonneau to cover the top as in the 2007-9 X150s?
Another good idea !🤔
Hi John, Yet another great topic and video. Keep em coming 🙂 I've had all the back sections out a few times now, replacing the hydraulic hoses and refurbing the roof cylinders. I'm sure you have probably done the job by now. But just in case you haven't, I found unhooking the right hand side roof liner frame, made it much easier to reach the hole that takes all the tubes and cables through in to the boot. I didn't know how too, the first time when I was dragging my front 2 hydraulic tubes through and could have kicked myself a few weeks later when I discovered it while putting my 2nd lot of tubes through to replace the cylinder hoses. Good luck and keep up the good work.
Great job John, really enjoy your videos.
Glad you like them!
Your shed?
My Dream shed maybe😁
Hi John, now the back seat’s out - will you refit or fit something more practical ?
They will be going back in for now but, Ultimately I think I will develop something more interesting at least. If not more practical. The trick to pull off is to make it at least as visually appealing as the pretty but pointless seats.
I think I'll stay with the chitty-chitty, bang-bang clan fix with spanner and hammer (Freelander 1). They have electrics, but no where near as many and complicated as FL2's.
😁👍.
I agree fully with your reflections regarding Jaguar’s past, present and future, and your thoughts on EVs. I also hope the very best for Jaguar, but I fear they soon will be in a ‘to be or not to be’ situation, like SAAB were some years ago.
I think SAAB is an interesting parallel👍
Hi John The the dissimilar metal stamping attached to the rear panel may be of a different type and strength and used as torsional reinforcement on the convertible
Hi Brian. Good thinking👍 However Its definately not present on later convertibles.
So, will we see next how to break into the boot from behind the seats in a coupe ? If so how do I/can I release the boot lock from inside the boot? I ask because my battery is fine but the remote boot release has stopped working with the key fob & the key in the back does not work ! The older model Jags had a rod behind the number plate which could be used with a pair of pliers to release the boot. Any info welcome, Thanks
RE. the poppers on the tonneau, my 2000 doesn't have them and the flap does occasionally fly up. I'm considering adding poppers, or possibly a bit of velcro to stop that from happening.
British Motor Museum, Gaydon. I go there quite often during Jaguar Breakfast Club monthly meetings. Great place.
👍
Hi John, I also found this strange semi-circular rubber 😮 I I still don't know what this part is for. It's a secret of the XK8. Thanks for the video. Regards Udo
A nice introduction to the items that this accesses; for example, the different types of speakers and the two types of speaker housings included in later cars (early and base only hang, not enclose the rear speakers); the part of the top tubing going through this area; the rear window regulators (rebuildable with metal gears by a firm here in Phoenix, done very well for my pax side); the top actuators; and undoubtably many more subsystems . While you are in this area, could you shine a bit of light on some of these areas? I very much appreciate viewing your videos while (whilst?) working on a complete forward suspension replacement (upper & lower control arms, anti sway & links, wheel bearings and brakes in our summer 46 degree temps. 1997 convertible with 70,000 mi.
I agree, I would really like to see how to access the speaker boxes on the premium sound cars. Can't find good information on that anywhere. 😢
Hi John , Bradley here ! Query about the escutcheon showing on the top/ hood @ 5:28. My 1997 is missing such , did you add that bit?
@@firehawk135 hi John Mine was also missing / there never was one. I fitted a plastic finger hole reinforcer from a heavy cat board carton. (My bike came in it) I fully intend to hand craft a much nicer item when I get a minute.
1 word: Terrifying
Looking at a 2003 xkr convertible with 100,249 miles. Asking price is $11,000 usd. Do you guys think the mileage is a tad bit too high for a new owner. Supposedly a 1 owner car
Hi John, Phil here - love the creaking leather sound as you remove the seat belt covers😂 Pure quality👍
One thing I really appreciate from your videos John is your parts vocabulary. The 'thingy' description I would no doubt use, is given its proper name by you. Trick for me is to remember it.
I like how some people have removed the back seat and built a carpeted cargo shelf. Much more useful.
I will look at mine tomorrow, thanks for this info, .. I have the XJR but should be the same on the normal belt, not the supercharged belt in theory.
Hi, is it possible to set up the speed for each level of assistance?
I will look at my back panel tomorrow as I can't remember mine being the same as yours, 2004 car.
Black seats hide a multitude of sins!
Gerard beat me to it! I'll bet anything that getting the seat back out will be 'interesting' on my Coupe.
The back rest is a lot more reclined in the coupe so there is more fore and aft space. but without a can opener, you do have to do some jobs at arms length using the powers of feel and swearing. Rear seat removal, Parcel shelf repair, centre speaker replacement and the 6 monthly repairs to the high-level rear brake light in 97 onwards cars .
@@ToTheGarage Thank goodness that my early car, like yours John, doesn't have the 3rd brake light in that case. Never saw it as a bonus before!
I've got to tell you John, from personal experience, it's a lot more cozy when you're doing this in the back of a coupé. Double jointed knees would have been handy 😂
Convertibles do have some advantages😁. But you do have to factor in the cost of a sun hat, and a rain hat and a bobble hat. So that kind of balances things back out🤣

Good stuff as always John. Sun visors a definite breakage.
You got that right! Yes the sunvisor mirror flaps are Very likely to be broken or get broken. Missed that one out😔. Well done Bernard
Ok,but why tons of Water Displacement 40 ? That poor thing must be soaking wet.
Using it for its lubricative and plastic protection qualities on this occassion👍
Sun visors are a certain break, but repair is relatively easy. The plastic hinge which houses a small metal piece gives way and the pressure from the metal that 'snaps' the visor in an upwards position no longer exists.
