  • In this channel we look at the drop links on Our Jaguar X100 XK8 XKR's and discover the ONE TOP TIP that makes chaning them very easy. Indeed I think its one of the best jobs for a beginner DIY mechanic to progress from Wiper blades and headlamp bulbs to non-consumer part replacement.
    I also address the many kind enquiries about my health and talk about how the channel may evolve, (for the better) as a result.
    Here is a link to the parts I used

    Another great video. Your description of the knocking tells me I probably need new drop links. Thanks.

    Morning John, many thanks for the video I shall now go and check mine, though it’s blowing a gale here at present. It’s good to hear you’re getting on top of your health issues and not ignoring them as so many chaps do.
    I have a few years on you so my list is slightly longer😊 but like you they’re being managed. Just as a word of advice to all who happen to read this if you’re over 50 do have your PSA levels checked ( simple blood test) most men don’t realise they have prostate cancer and for some they find out when it’s too late. Even now I wouldn’t know I have it and mine was diagnosed 5 years ago through a routine company medical and is still just managed with active surveillance, blood tests & MRI scans. Apologies for hijacking this John but it’s an easy thing to manage if you know you’ve got it.

    Hi John, thanks for showing the video, yes it is an easy job. I would like to add that there are also cheap alternatives. But in this case you should only use the original parts. Our Unfortunately, roads are not the best either. I am also aware of your health problems. I wish you all the best and discipline in keeping to the diet. Best wishes, Udo

    Thanks for the new video John, and congratulations on having your own "life audit"
    Having been self-employed (not through choice originally) for the last 20 years and now semi-retired, I can empathise with your thoughts. Especially the bit about your clients.
    Would they worry so much about you as you worry about them? Maybe they would and I am sure they will be very fond of you as a person and as a professional. But put yourself first.
    Just my two penny worth. Your health is first and foremost. All the best John.

    Glad to hear that you're on top of your medical wellbeing. I'm a bit older than you but had a similar journey with levels of blood pressure, cholesterol etc, but having a great doctor has helped me get ticks in every box with the right level of medication and lifestyle changes. I had prostate cancer and a stroke just to add some complications, but am happy to say I've turned the corner on all things. I think you deserve to push yourself less John. Good health mate!

    Hi John. Good to hear that you know what needs doing on the health front. 👍
    A small point here, but my practice is to do the final tightening of suspension components with the wheels on the ground (or on ramps or similar to allow for easy access) so that any rubber bushes are not pretensioned when the car is lowered. I suspect that your drop links will now be pretensioned as the antiroll bar and the lower control arms will have moved upwards and the angle of the drop link will have changed compared to when you tightened them up. What do you think?
    Richard

      Hi Richard you are right. And I should have done that.😞. The to p part of the drop link does almost all of the articulation on our cars. ( and fortunately that’s a ball joint ) so I won’t stress too much about it. But you are 100% right mate. Top tip👍

    Hi John. Great video and catch up. You can't beat new shiny bits needed or not 😁
    I think I may have a rear wheel bearing on my 98 xk8 on its way out. I wondered if you have prior experience of changing these?
    I have heard that the rears can be more challenging..
    Glad your looking after yourself. There comes a point for everyone where quality of life is more important than the financial rewards of working all hours 👍

    • @richardsutton01
      @richardsutton01 Před 3 měsíci

      I haven't done it myself but I believe that the front wheel bearing is more challenging because of the need for the special tool to remove the ABS ring and the very high torque required.
      I don't think that the rear bearing needs any special Jaguar tools but you will need a press to remove the bearing unless you buy a complete hub with the bearing already inserted. Both options are available.
      You might need a large puller to extract the hub but if you are replacing the hub anyway then brute force can probably be used, if necessary.

    I just got an MOT advisory on these (Front droplinks), so I am going to give replacing them a go! i have done the rear drop links previously. I will probably clean up and re rust proof the front suspension while I m there. @ John - do you not feel the need to strip the front suspension , shot blast it and powder coat it?

  • @CliveWilmer
    @CliveWilmer Před 3 měsíci +1

    Another question were you tempted to change the bushes for uprated polybushes?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thought about it. But a sharper and marginally harsher ride than standard was not a priority. I’ve used poly bushes previously on many more track day focused cars and they have been great and have lasted well. But you do feel a difference in NVH and despite knowing all of the grease and PTFE tricks they often develop squeaks.
      But for some the handling improvements and ease of installation are a bigger draw👍👍👍👍
