A model railroad is never finished, mine isn't anyway - check out the progress and learn from my mistakes as I build a 1970's Brooklyn - Queens themed layout. It's a city worn, tired and covered in graffiti, served by Conrail and leftover New Haven and Penn Central rolling stock.

New sub here 🇬🇧 Brilliant workmanship 👍
aNice job! Very informative. Have yried 1/25 scale rusting but on HO doesnt seem to translate well. Will try this..👍
The reason I haven't been building my kits is I don't have a place to put them after I finish. I'm not worried about damaging the model during construction, I'm worrying about damaging the built kit after I finish but before I can get a place large enough to build a model railroad to put it on. If all my kits are still unbuilt in 20-30 years, it's because housing never became affordable enough.
Hi, I miss new videos, Doug. Hope all is alright!
Good video Doug. I'm doing a grade crossing today, using .020 styrene between the code 73 rails. Golden Fiber Paste for an asphalt texture (because I already had it) and then paint grimy black. Celluclay outside the rails. I had an industry too with no way in or out for truck traffic. Nobody ever mentioned it in all the videos I've done but It was bugging me. Take care - Bill.
Where's the A train? =D
A kit that I recently built was the discontinued Brachs Candy in N scale. Really liked it and found it to come out the way I wanted it to. Sorry it isn't easily available, but because it was someone else's unbuilt kit, I got a chance!
Freaking amazing.
Nice job on the rocks. I'm just getting in to HO so I have lots to learn.
Amazing scale build you got going on! Enjoying the tricks of the the hobby!
That background noise takes away from your presentation.
Your premise doesn't go far enough. Building by scratch requires more thought and imagination than following the instruction page from a kit. It's satisfying to turn blank sheets of basswood, balsa or plastic, or castoff food containers, to create miniature versions of reality. My first encounter with scratch-building was a coal bunker from the November 1964 issue of Model Railroader. It was an inspiration. Soon after that, I was building structures that I saw along railroad tracks in my hometown. These novel buildings had sentiments that no kit-made structure can ever replicate. A good example is a large backyard barn that became a playhouse for me and my buddies when we were kids. Try producing memories from a kit. Sure, I had setbacks. An open-air sawmill by Jack Work in Model Railroader in 1968 was beyond my skills. But his techniques taught me how to build projects in the future. One kit I bought was very disappointing: a Suydam grain elevator made of actual corrugated metal. It turned out to be horrible. For the money I spent on that kit, I could have built two or three grain elevators, each with a distinct style. If scratch-building is daunting, try kit-bashing. I once turned an Athearn blue-box boxcar into a transfer caboose. Kit-bashing inexpensive discards is a lot more fun than kit-building. One point worth underscoring: Kits are exorbitantly expensive. Can you populate an entire city at these costs? A scratch-builder can. Jobs and family needs kept me away from the hobby. Now that I'm retired, it's time to get off my armchair. I can afford scratch-building.
Good video. I’m in process of putting static grass on an abandoned yard track. Question - at the end of your tracks where the grass is heavier, did you put the grass over the ties or just between them?
Nice man
Very nice video I'm For New York I have seen that old train bridge before. Question how do you make your ho scale high way signs?
You played around with some of those Russian kits SHEESH that’s top of my list. Kirbi is always enjoyable auhagen noch faller bush and yes even walthers have been a reasonable digestion by yes there are real dooseys but scale model scenery does run a sharp Operation but fair warning you may need a sharper blade. Hope you get a chance to take a peep at some of my content and see you in the next one.
Hey what do you know. After all my model train videos I find a person from NYC. I grew up in Brooklyn. We always played on a frieght line running alongside the "N" train from 8th Ave to 15th Ave. I am now 57 yrs old. But as a kid my friends used to surf on top of the N train. Luckily they are all still here. Although one passed away last week of natural cause. (Heart Attack) 54yrs old. Nice to see someone modeling local trains.
Brilliant Video wonderful modelling skills impressive concrete viaduct
Wow, that little slimy area looks great!
And then sand till even? I'd imagine you'd have to since that final pass with the tool seemed to leave some uneven.
Did you just do those by hand? I don't have that talent so I am hoping you say they are water transfers....
Man, I needed that. What a great approach. I'm always too precious with weathering and it ends up way too underdone. But, that's a very naturalistic effect you created. Thanks, great channel.
I cut up one of my wife’s stocking to put over the end of the vacuum to catch some of the grass.
Looks great, learned a lot!
Spettacolo,bravo Doug🚂👏👏
Fantastico lavoro Doug🚂🤙
What's the purpose of heating already hot water
Just use a wire brush
WOW ... 😳 ... That was awesome to watch!!!! 😁👍
great job
Hi Doug, I am new to your site and I have to say your dioramas are magnificent. What I can't tell though is what scale you are working in, is it O or HO? . . cheers from Australia
Enjoyed the video -thanks! This is my first time watching so you may already use this technique, but, if not, this is intended as a helpful suggestion, NOT a criticism: Have you ever tried "scribing" to create the matching profile on the foam or your template? -ie: set a compass to the maximum difference between the lower "ground level" (as though you are using them as a caliper to measure the distance) and the underside of the horizontal foam spanning the gap, then while maintaining the compass in a vertical orientation, trace the ground elevation below the lower edge of the foam ) with the "point" of the compass while the pencil marks the vertical face of the foam. As you are tracing along the horizontal ground level, you must hold the compass "plumb" to create a pencil line on the foam the precise vertical distance off the "ground". In this tight spot at an arms length away it might be difficult but in some circumstances it can create quite accurate profile. Thanks again for sharing!
Absolutely lovely attention to detail bud, really lovely work ! Greetings from Portsmouth England 🏴
Came out great, love the sign and weathering
I heard he is not the real father and the mother has a younger boyfriend. I think the boyfriend barks with an English accent. Maury Povich is scheduled this family for next week when the dna results are completed, as far as the boyfriend he apparently has a family back in London and claims to only have met the mother one time at a dog park where they were never left alone for any longer than 30 seconds.
Love the video! Your weathering looks great. You inspire me to keep working on my model railroad.
Thanks for sharing this great project. Excellent finish and weathering.
Great video !
Looks really good, Doug. I was a little unsure when you started. I should have kept the faith
How did you do the graffiti?
Half are decals from Blair Line, the rest are hand painted (the simpler ones)
@@FosScaleModels - great job!
Great video Doug! Your layout is definitely coming along nicely!
Thanks Ron!
I never thought of using the band saw to cut the foam board. Better than the hot wire thing; cleaner edge and no vinyl chloride fumes. I'm a high risk for liver cancer and vinyl chloride will do that to you.
Super fun
Howdy! Very cool. I'm learning that with scratch building and weathering, layers are the key. Nicely done and thanks for sharing 🤠
Bellissimo....bravo
The viaduct turned out great! Watching your videos have helped me advance my modeling skills...many Thanks!! I personally would like to see more photos of the area the viaduct covered up...walls, debris, unkempt track etc. All those details look great from a distance, but would love to see them up-close! Keep up the great work!!!
Glad the videos are helping with your modeling. I'll have a layout update video soon and show more close ups . thx for watching!
I like it!!!!!
Won't Mineral Spirits eat at your Foam? Obviously not, as that did not happen. WHY???
Bare foam yes, but if it's painted and then coated with stucco finish it's well protected. Thx for watching Mark.
this looks spot on! 👌
Now that's proper scenic modelling. Superb.
Thanks!
