The building that your friend built is spectacular and deserves a larger scene. I agree with you that the minor expansion will make a huge improvement in the scene and the layout. It always wonderful to see your thoughts on developing a scene.

I'm always amazed at how easily you push and pull the edges (limits) of your layout. In my mind these have always been constraints whereas you simply see them as challenges. I learn from each of your videos. You are a great teacher!

I wanted to add a trestle to an 8-foot x 2-foot section of my layout. I did not even think of doing something like this. This is a great idea. Thanks

I'm looking forward to seeing how the subway end comes out.

Doug, great extension, it is amazing how such a small addition makes such a large different. great video how you explain your issue, and then master a solution to it.
It is always such a balancing act with a layout.
Thank you for sharing, cheers, and stay safe, Michael

I was so looking forward to the pier warehouses. I am so glad you are keeping them, just arranging it differently. Waterfronts are always a crowd pleaser. Cheers Rob

That stripped car is a thing of “beauty”. Scenes like that bring a layout alive.

Dear Doug, although I agree on the relocation of the large dock mockup and do appreciate the different options for the buildings you showed to open up the scene into the corner of the layout, I do humbly think that the last ‘finger’ of the harbor needs a different kind of appropriation. Just from the geographical or nautical perspective the twin dock building still remaining will be very hard to reach and serve by freighter. Maybe it’s not something you should really care about, for the layout is just a depiction of a relatively small dock. However, such a small dock space would be useful for landing tug boats, resupplying them and do necessary maintenance of cables, chains and maybe even tug engines. Stock for tug maintenance often is placed in the open air and relatively small cranes will create the opportunity of a more open dock space. That will create a better connection to the water element of the scene than just the selection of commercial structures you showed as temporary placeholders.
Of course it’s your layout, no sweat if you don’t, just because you’re doing nothing definite yet to this area I thought it was worth it to share this idea. Cheerio

There's definitely a lot to consider, but ultimately given the limited space I'm sure I'll have to compromise and compress things.

Sometime you just need to fix another area enough to stop worrying about it (for now) so you can get re-energized and go back to the other end. I'm glad you kept the long pier warehouses and opened up the corner for viewing. Does the layout extend beyond this point?

With all the dissimilar materials (pine, masonite, foam) do you have problems with cracking due to differential expansion? Love your work btw.

There's one spot where some scenery separated and created a small 1/32" gap...nothing scenery can't hide.

  • @HartfordWhaler

I like the 2 pier buildings. They look era appropriate together. Is another option to put a wall in front of those rear tracks. I.e., hide them?

I don't want to make then hard to get to, I did consider covering them on top but open on the side with columns, so a semi-tunnel... we'll see when i get back down there.
