  • An underground subway section was a must have for my New York City 1970's themed layout. I build a small section, using a mirror to extend it and add some lighting.

    I grew up in Boston, so I spent a lot of time on the subway. I am thinking about a network of PCC cars on my layout. Nice job, I love it.

    As a retired Motorman for the TA that looks great, I got a little nervous when I saw the finished effort, was expecting a bunch of kids running along the tracks. Just one the alcove should have been painted yellow safety yellow and weathered dirty

      @FosScaleModels  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Next one, yellow alcoves...for some reason I remembered them the same as tunnel walls, but makes sense.

  • @nynscaler2482
    @nynscaler2482 Před 3 měsíci +3

    Nice job on the model. It's an accurate depiction - only difference being the 3rd rail omission. Also, the tunnel lights are typically mounted on the tunnel walls. I work for the TA and have walked the subway tunnels on numerous occasions with a front row view to the details. Fun Fact: The recesses in the walls are referred to as "niches"; "manholes" are structures used to house/access cable runs/equipment. Hope to see some of the kits in N scale!

    • @user-dj7wv5ok2x
      @user-dj7wv5ok2x Před 3 měsíci

      There were other differences as well; there wasn't any catwalks on the side walls like there usually would be, and the niches were rounded, instead of squared, as they mostly are in the NYC subway tunnels.
      This DID, however, look like an accurate representation of the LIRR Atlantic Avenue tunnel from the Flatbush Terminal to the Bedford Avenue portal; no catwalks on the side walls which, incidentally, have rounded niches.

    I would like to construct a rapid transit themed layout that combines subway, el and open cut running, as well as some freight switching. Grades and accessibility are the biggest head scratchers in creating a balance between reliability/practicality and scenic impact. Lots of great food for thought just in this corner of your layout. Cheers.

    I want to model something similar too. So cool to see the underside of a layout modeled. You do have room to extend that out from the facia maybe 12 to 18 inches and create a little platform with stairs to the street above. Such a neat addition to your layout Doug. Helps me to get inspired even more. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Rob

    This is what I wanted!!! I want to design one that is underneath the fascia and I was thinking of doing Helix to bring up basically what would be two levels out of a tunnel and then be an elevated rail system, that crept out of the tunnel on a slight incline. Then I started thinking why deal with the Helix when I could just make the topography change. So now I'm thinking more along the lines of on one side of the layout, there will be a visible subway station, or two... And then disappear back into the fascia and gradually do a climb and come out the same slightly inclined tunnel but on an area of the layout where the street level is much much lower

    Great representation of the real thing regarding the NYC subways! You have a special talent for all you do in the model railroading hobby in general! That's obvious! My models(mth subway sets, and a Premier AC4400CW Southern Pacific, Diesel) are O Gauge. There're a couple NY Subway modelers in the web, like Joseph Frank, that is fantastic! Also a guy that has a channel called Artist Layout that models an underground subway station and tunnels very realistically! But Your work is exceptional also!
    I'll be on the lookout for your elevated subway build video!
    Congrats,

    Doug nice project and I appreciate how you took us through it step by step. You made it look simple but there's a little bit to the CAD drawing and of course the equipment to do the laser cutting. Everything looks good and you can always add that third rail later. I've been a fan of those wire brackets since I first saw you use them in a past video. Any chance you could make for O scale? Cheers!

    You can get mirrors made of acrylic glass, might be easier to deal with than glass. Some companies will even send out sample packs. You could cap the front of the tunnel with an inward facing one-way mirror as well. Fun project, looks great!

    no clue how good it would be visible but why not power the tracks and put some light into the subway car?
    without the mirror a flickering light in the tunnel would also be a good idea.
