Why Walkers Exist in Star Wars
Why should walking vehicles (or rolling vehicles for that matter) exist in the Star Wars world, which has robust hovering repulsorlift vehicles? I think George Lucas actually gave us the answer in the films.

    The smaller beam might transport coolant to the blue glowing radiators on the inbound of the nacelles. The larger beam transports warp plasma, interstellar gas, hot coolant, and have transport tubes. The vacuum of space then helps insulate the coolant from the other one. Or maybe the warp plasma travels through the smaller one and the larger one is everything else. The point is that the smaller conduit is thermally isolated from the rest of the pylon by the conduit. This likely helps keep whatever is in there at a stable temperature.

    Unknown to many historians, the Nazis and their fellow Axis had close but highly secretive ties with the Galactic empire of the despotic Emperor Palpatine. The empire loaned the Wehrmacht 50 of the vehicles plus their five-man (Clone) crews and 1000 ground troops on the understanding that once the war was over the Fuhrer would send 100 of his best soldiers to enhance the gene pool and training of the imperial troopers. (In later years human mercenaries from many nations were highly regarded and feared throughout the galaxy, though this is a story for another time.) To say this brief alliance was a disaster is an understatement! SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Michael Wittman, arguably Germany's Best Tank Commander of WWII, was not impressed from the start... "When I first saw the thing (AT-AT) all I could think of was, my God, it's too big (25 meters tall) it will be seen for miles around, why don't we just paint a damned bullseye on the side and have done with it!" The Hauptsturmfuhrers words were indeed prophetic, for when battle was joined with the meagre Soviet forces in the early days of operation Barbarossa the vulnerabilities and other shortcomings of the imperial walkers became glaringly evident. Though the AT-AT was an imposing and spectacular sight on the battlefield its lack of compatible communications, speed, mobility, armaments and most importantly its lack of effective armour was its Achilles heel, it was all too easily outmaneuvered and out-gunned by even the lightest of Russian fighting vehicles. The main problem lay in it's total lack of protection against armour-piercing and high explosive shells of almost any calibre! The imperials had designed the defences of all their combat vehicles and personal body armour around the effects of "energy" weapons (particle beam, laser, pulse etc) and this it apparently could do very well indeed, however, against "primitive" societies using "primitive" projectile weapons the AT-AT proved all too horribly vulnerable as Grenadier Sergeant Alfred Gunther explains. "We're sitting in the troop compartment of this "Sardine tin," when all of a sudden we were raked by a heavy Ruski MG somewhere out on the left flank, the bullets tore through the paper-thin sides and went ricocheting around the compartment like a swarm of angry hornets, of the thirty men onboard only eight got away unscathed, Christ we hated them, it was safer to trudge behind the rotten things than ride in them!" After the initial shock wore off, the Soviet anti-tank gunners and tank crews looked forward to a little, "Elephant hunting" as they unimaginatively called it. Communication was the other big hurdle that had to be overcome and this was only partially achieved. Alfred Gunther again, "We had radio, they had something else, God knows what! We spoke German they didn't, if we were trying to coordinate an attack on a village all we could do was point madly and shout Bang!-Bang! Yes, the imperial troops were well disciplined, brave and aggressive their weapons were effective and terribly "colourful and pretty" to watch going off, though they never seemed to hit much with them, this and the lack of clear communications made the whole thing laughable!" Hauptsturmfuhrer Wittman also wrestled with poor communication. "Much to my horror I was put in command of an AT-AT. Its imperial crew, despite the language barrier, were enthusiastic and obviously well trained and it was easy to teach them the meaning of, forward, reveres, left, right etc but the main problem was that they all seemed to be conditioned to wear their combat helmets at all times except when told to stand down by there superior imperial officers. Now I was not issued with a compatible coms system so how on earth was I supposed to issue orders to my crew in the heat of battle? My solution was simplistic. My makeshift position in the vehicle was perched above and directly behind the driver who sits on the right the engineer/co-driver on the left and the commander/gunner in the centre, if I wanted to go forward I would tap the back of the driver's helmet with my boot, once for forward twice for stop three times for reverse, and a tap on the right or left shoulder for my desired direction. As for the gunner, all I could do is fire a stream of tracer from my MG (we were not permitted to use their weapons...) at the desired target and the gunner would fire the main armament, it was crude but still effective after a fashion but still no way to fight a war!" The weaponry of the AT-AT, though effective against personnel and other soft targets, had little or no real effect on the more heavily armoured Soviet tanks the "charge" being dissipated on contact with the thick steel hull. However, if a bolt hit an open-view port directly the resultant plasma blast would prove decisive! Though it was a true all-terrain vehicle it could be stymied by simple barbed wire entanglements that were laid in-depth, couple this with its inability to turn quickly to engage flanking targets, the overly high and simplistic slab-sided design and the inability to withstand all but small arms fire added to its hopples vulnerability. Unaware of the true origin of this lumbering and seemingly inept enemy, General Georgy Zhukov wondered allowed if, "The fascist designers have been drinking a little too much Schnapps or are trying to be too clever or for their tank men's good!" After its disastrous debut during Operation Barbarossa (37 of the original 50 AT-ATs being destroyed in the opening few days) it was relegated to transporting supplies and troops but they too became easy targets for marauding IL-2 Sturmoviks and other attack aircraft of the resurgent Soviet forces later in the war and all were ultimately destroyed. Many have wondered why Emperor Palpatine didn't try to invade Earth, the answer must lie in the performance (or total lack of) of their "superior weaponry." To design and produce weapons to subjugate the inhabitants of just one "primitive" world, who would have no doubt put aside their differences and allied together to fight the invaders, must have been a daunting prospect even for the power-mad and expansionist Emperor Palpatine... To put it in a nutshell, I quote one of Germany's great tank and motor vehicle designers, Ferdinand Porsche, "These men from the stars may know everything about crossing the cosmos, but they know nothing about building a half-decent Panzer!" Grunthos.

  • @xoawolf
    @xoawolf Před 2 dny

    First off, no, don't try to defend this massive plot hole. Now with that said. I don't buy the whole "hyper drives are too expensive" argument. Literally every rebel/resistance star fighter has one. The ONLY reason it makes sense why the crew couldn't procure the funds to just straight up buy a replacement back on Tatooine, is due to the fact that they fled their home world. I duno about you, but if I'm about to get merc'd, the last thing I'd think of doing is to grab my space gucci purse... ok maybe not, but from a royalty perspective, and from someone with morals, that's likely not what Padme or Queen Amidala is going to do. The next thing is that, you don't need to "destroy" the Death Star, simply disabling it's weapon would be enough, and it's even possible to cause the destruction of the entire station, as you'd likely set off a chain reaction in doing so. Another issue with your points, is that you're insinuating that everyone's argument is to kamikaze ships into the enemy, which while it would probably work, as you stated is rather wasteful. But at the same time, you don't NEED to use ships. Simply hyperspace a sabot type round or even a simple rod (made of sturdy enough material). All it would take to know just how effective this kind of weapon would be, is to look up "Rods from God", and those aren't even hyper speed. The last point I have to make for now, is that you don't have to use it as a first response. It could be done as a final option, well after the crew has abandoned ship. You likely wouldn't even need to put a droid on board to do it, if you're feeling particular ethical. Just place a delay on a autopilot system, where after everyone has jettisoned from the ship, that it goes into hyperspace, aimed at whatever target. And no, the Deathstar would not be able to just "counter dodge", even with ample warning.

    @HalSchirmer Před 3 dny

    Just saw this, forgive necropost/ reanimating a dead discussion BUT: Eh, it does make some sense, 'in world'. TOS used dilithium to mediate matter-antimattter annihilation, later techno-handwaved that dilithium crystals interact with subspace. Actual fungal spores are crystalline, so perhaps their lattice vibrations have subspace interactions. Interesting side effect of panspermia is that living things evolve and accumulate random mutations, so fungal genetics would be slightly different for each population across the galaxy. If the DNA inside the spore shell is slightly different it should add a 'resonance' or overtone to the crystalline subspace-interacting spore shell, like playing a note on a guitar. Breed enough varieties of spore populations, and you should be able to 'tune in' to distant areas of the galaxy like tuning into a FM radio station. To get instantaneous travel, you borrow from Mach's paradox that inertial mass reacts to force instantaneously (compared to gravitational mass which take time for gravitational waves to propagate) and handwave quantum entanglement + quantum tunneling = spore drive.

  • @matthewreichlin4993

    Sorry, but I think you are way off. I see your point and understand the logic and can even appreciate it somewhat. But I think it all stems from a few faulty premises. Firstly, I don't see how Han shooting first in any way makes him cowardly or anything but a rogish hero. He's not a cornered animal for the very reason that he slyly maneuvers them both to the table while acting nonchalant so that he can pull out his gun undetected. That seems quite competent and sly. Secondly, it's in no way cowardly because anyone being taken by gunpoint to a mobster is perfectly justified in killing the person trying to do it. Getting the opportunity to do it is the sly competent rogish thing to do. Letting yourself be taken would actually be the incompetent thing to do. Lastly, something I don't understand is people always have this assumption that greedo intends to shoot on, something Han must defend himself from. Firstly, he already has legitimate cause to defend himself and secondly, greedo has no intention of killing him . So it really makes no sense that he shoots it all. We have no idea if jabba put out a dead or alive bounty, but considering what Java does eventually, it seems likely that Java wanted him alive to make an example of him and humiliate him. It doesn't seem a stretch to assume that at minimum, the price dead would be less than alive and greedo would be motivated to take him alive. If the intent were to take him Dead, greedo could have just shot him and dragged his body out the door, at gunpoint against everyone else if need be I suppose. We know that the bar doesn't seem to have any great objections to such things and everyone just kind of shrugs and goes back to whatever they were doing. So, if greedo were to shoot Han at all, it really would have to be a result of some provocation. So, Han shooting him might serve that purpose. But I wouldn't go so far as to say him getting a shot off at all somehow makes Han come off less competent. He hits while grito misses. It certainly doesn't make Han seem more competent that greedo even gets a shot off. So, bottom line, I really don't understand why it was added at all. Han slightly blasting him is the most competent. H an killing him while also being shot at is still competent although less so. And ultimately, there is no logical explanation for greedo shooting Han at all.

    I do wonder if some folks don't fully grasp the scale, cost, and casualty of war; especially from the perspective of a smaller rebel group in asymmetric warfare. They don't have an empire's bottomless coffers for ideal equipment, and even if it weren't asymmetric sometimes the only viable strategy is one that may result in immeasurable tragedy. D-day comes to mind. Stalingrad. Everything done by the Viet Cong. Why did they use those ships? Because they had to. Why did so many people die? Because they had to. War is hell, in part because of the moral calculus with human lives and sending people into a meat grinder; every day at once trying to solve the trolley problem and being tied to the tracks yourself. The scene didn't make sense? Good. It shouldn't. It's war. The scene did its job. The moment it starts making sense something is wrong, and you should probably talk to someone

    Machinery take up a lot of room. Main shuttle bay is about 3 stories tall and covers much of the area of those decks. I know these would be removed from OP's estimate. They would make the ship bigger for the whole crew on the top of the primary hull issustration. Probably there are several entire decks of available staterooms. These are for evacuees, diplomats and staff. Also each of the four duty sections would have it's own area of a deck or even its own deck, so that everyone in a specific area is on the same schedule as everyone else. There would be buffer and guest cabins between the duty sections. Families get bigger suites with several bedrooms, unlike the single bedroom suits like Captain Picard's quarters. Your habitable areas would also include schools, shopping and entertainment areas that we never saw in the show.

    Star Wars ships layout is silly when you think about it. Having the weapons at a fixed point. On the top of the wing and no rockets? The bigger ships make zero sense to me. Like where are the cannons under the ship? They are in space, there can be a combat vector all over sense they are in space. Then who makes a capital ship without any flankcannons and puts the bridge at the top of the ship? The bridge is the area you what protected. The standard imperial figther are made out of wet tissue paper and lacks a sheld. Also lacks a hyperdrive for the most part.
