      @@ChupeTTe Eh these filming models tend to be pretty large. For some examples from Star Trek, the original Enterprise model from TOS was 11 feet long, while the version used for movies 1-6 was 8 feet long. The larger of the two Enterprise-D models for TNG was 6 feet long, which is about the same as the Reliant from Wrath of Khan. The Enterprise-E from First Contact went way up to 10.5 feet, while the larger of the two Bird-of-Prey models was 3 feet long and 3.3 feet wide.

      @@rightsideup6304 tbh The Clone Wars is a cartoon, far from a realistic depiction of all of the ships' capabilities or armament. I mean, who knew the Arquitens had Orbital turbolasers ? TCW was mostly written to have cartoon-episode beats, to build tension by destroying small ships first, while the Venators suffered some damage but soldiered through the space battles. Here, though, in The Mandalorian, this cruiser is one of the biggest, meanest things we've seen - and it punches.

    Okay, now you have to do an in-depth breakdown on this new Arquitens variant. It's clearly not a typical Arquitens, with the three distinct internal hangar spaces, revised armament, extra engines and seemingly more spacious bridge structure. This ship deserves a full breakdown. For now let's call it an Arquitens-II or Thunderwasp type. We don't know much about the Thunderwasp other than it had internal hangar spaces, but this comes at the cost of cargo transport at the very least. I think Moff Gideon's flagship might be a bit bigger than a typical Arquitens, or at least the bridge structure is roomier.

    • @pills-
      @pills- Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah. The camera never pushes flat against the hull or twists and turns like you can with camera angles on CG models. Also, the lighting on the model is very... pinpoint-sourced? IDK the term, but it's not nearly as diffuse like lighting on most CG models.
      Doesn't mean it's actually a model, but all the same techniques used for physical models were used in this shot.

  • @TotallySlapdash
    @TotallySlapdash Před 3 lety +18

    I suspect it's both. Build a practical model and then use a combination of LIDAR scanning and photogrammetry to digitalise it.
    That way you get the directoral flexibility of a digital model with the hand-crafting and texture of a physical one.

    • @Bruh-zx2mc
      @Bruh-zx2mc Před 4 měsíci

      Ridiculous. There's no LIDAR/photogrammetry that's going to capture a part of the ship slightly suspended by glue - even if they could digitize the model perfectly, it would be incredibly pointless to waste money on building a practical model to make a digital model that looks real, when it would be cheaper, easier and quicker to add imperfections to a digital model or just use the practical model.

  • @fiveoneecho
    @fiveoneecho Před 3 lety +5

    0:15 - To be fair, it's pretty easy to get that "real" look in CG, they just don't do it because it's not the style of current SciFi. We saw it in Rogue One with those star destroyers. The thing here is that they haven't gotten the contrast right since it's using studio lights instead of- well- the sun (or a light in digital space with a magnitude like that of the sun). It gives it a very soft and "touchable" look, similar to shooting log and not correcting the contrast there. (These are all good things for this look and I'm not saying they messed anything up)
    Edit: my point in this is that most of what sells the realism of how something looks is the lighting. The shader you would use to make this in CG would be so basic, you could almost use the default clay shaders used in most editors.
    AND using real models is only good if the rest of your visual style fits with real assets. You don't want everything to look clean and scale and then have one spaceship somehow have giant finger prints and dust particles on the glass because the real model is 3 feet long. Star Wars is fantastic because it's built on physical models so all of this stuff looks incredible!

    • @zeealpal
      @zeealpal Před 3 lety +2

      Thankyou! I appreciate the use of a miniature, but to say that can't be done in CGI is disingenuous. Adding in flaws and imperfections is a key part of good CGI, it just isn't always done so well.

    • @fiveoneecho
      @fiveoneecho Před 3 lety +2

      @@zeealpal I agree entirely. I don’t think any one tool is best when it comes to this stuff. I could create that shot from scratch in a day in CG. The best tool is the one that lets you express the story and art-style you intend to. Star Wars using models is just plane cool because it’s an homage to the originals. If we see the imperfections of physical models and get our immersion ruined a little, it’s not going to take away from the story because it’s freaking Star Wars! That’s the visual style! I just got the impression that this video was trying to say that real models are inherently better for film making- like it would be worse quality if they didn’t use models- which is disagree with.

They were some of the only "medium" sized ships used by both the Republic and the Empire. It's funny - I also got the impression it was a practical effect, but mostly because the closeup gave the impression that it was a high-quality toy. The imperfections you pointed out here are on a scale that you'd see in a miniature model, not a vessel the size that model is meant to represent. It had a great classic feel to it, but we've definitely reached the point where CGI can go head to head with practical effects in terms of quality

      Same bro, quite a few people have been referring to this ship as an Arquitens II due to its restoration of the side Concussion missile launchers from the republic era & both a Frontal small TIE hangar & centre bottom hull medium-sized hanger that looks to be able to fit a squadron in it... Not to mention the enlarged bridge.
      Literally the most versatile capital ship now lol, especially now that it can still dock a Sential dropship on the front still

    If this is really a miniature model, I would love a scale model of it. The arquitens class is just the perfect ship that the Empire should have mass produced more than the Imperial class. You can build 38 arquitens class with the same resources it takes to build a single Imperial class, you can man it with tiny fraction of Imperial class crew, and it is still strong enough to withstand the average Rebel cell. I would also love to see an upgraded arquitens class with a stronger focus on ship-to-ship combat and anti fighter role.

    I was wondering about that too, whether it was CGI made to look like a physical model or an actual model. What triggered me was the depth of field in the shot, but combined with the details you describe and what we know of how they shot the Razor Crest a physical model seems very likely. I wouldn't be surprised however if they also had made a very high detailed 3d scan of the model for CGI work.

  • @Foomandoonian

Etc. I don't have any expectations on the new republic intervening in the battle cause its clone wars republic corruption all over again. Well we could find out that jedi and possibly that new republic fighter pilot we saw talking last time to cara dune but again I have low expectations on the new republic in the mandalorian

    Can you do a video analyzing the scene from the last episode where we say the heroes inside Slave 1 in what seemed like a rotating compartment? Was this just an illusion with the exterior fins rotating? Was this space on Slave 1 something we'd seen in previous models or cross sections? Does it really make sense to have a rotating inner compartment above a ship like Slave 1?
    Thanks for all your videos!

    • @pills-
      @pills- Před 3 lety

      iirc, most designs for Slave 1 (Star Wars incredible cross sections?) have a gyroscopic pilot/copilot seat. But the Mandalorian makes it look more like an entire "deck" that can rotate between level and perpendicular flight.

    • @GuanoLad
      @GuanoLad Před 3 lety

      Watch in the previous episode when the Slave 1 comes in to land, it has to do a complex 270° twist, which would be very weird for a pilot to have to deal with inside a planet's atmosphere, so it needs some kind of gyroscopic compensation for its cargo bay and cockpit. It was always something the fans were curious about, and though we got hints of it in _Attack Of The Clones,_ we'd never seen it properly. Until now. It's touches like this that prove the creative team are dedicated nerdy Star Wars fans, the fact that they thought of how to do this, and also knew we all wanted to see it, makes me happy.

    In practical modelling the artist works to make something real look "fantastic".
