  • The Millennium Falcon is one of the most iconic ships in science fiction. But turns out that it's actually a canon ship in Star Trek as well! But maybe we can redesign it.

      Now in this lower cost configuration, the Falcatta can detach from its lower hull and act as a stealth ship while it's lower engineering hull can either be hidden safely, or flown elsewhere fulfilling an additional mission. The Falcatta would magnetically be bound to a sort of landing pad which is attached to the characteristic "neck" found in the larger Starfleet ships.

    It's fairly common knowledge that both the Serenity from Firefly and Original Series Enterprise appear in the 2004 Battlestar Galactica mini-series. We see the Serenity when Roslin is receiving her initial cancer diagnosis and the Enterprise appears later in the background of the civilian fleet, probably because of Ronald D. Moore's connection to the Star Trek franchise. Could you do these those two ships, but redesign them to fit the BSG universe? Otherwise I like the design here. Another variant could have been a torpedo boat with the central dish area instead being torpedo storage and the mandibles being where the launchers are housed. Like the original design for the Defiant in the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual that later became the Nova-class science ship. A high-warp, torpedo heavy combatant meant for hit and fade attacks.

See Y-wings, old, rusty bombers being actually faster and more agile than TIE Fighters (facepalm). The stat blocks also didn't match the ships at all (see 60 "batteries" of ISD instead of 8 heavy turrets it really has in the movies). They were also so bad at math they couldn't even be bothered to finish stat blocks and you often had "price - not available for sale" and "stat - unknown"...

    While I do like the design, I think the role is a little convoluted. Still, as it is the ship does also have value in it's ability to extend the firing arc of a much larger capital ship, letting it sit inside the shield of a larger capital ship and direct fire from weapons arrays that would otherwise be unable to fire at the target because of their orientation on the ship (Having good weapons coverage is extremely valuable, but if the enemy is directly in front of you then all those extra weapons aren't really doing anything at the moment.).
    Personally I think it would be better as essentially someone slapping engine nacelles on a galaxy class deflector array, a utility ship rather than a fighting one.

    • @altasilvapuer
      @altasilvapuer Před 4 lety +12

      I have to agree on the convoluted nature of the role. I LOVED the design, but found myself shaking my head throughout the whole description. Honestly, at a glance it looks like a slightly lighter Defiant class, and I think it could excel in that role. The Defiant always struck me as intentionally being a brick with guns. Where most Starfleet ships have what I see as weak points in the nacelle and saucer mounts, the Defiant is more compact and defensively oriented.
      The Falcata could easily be Starfleet experimenting with similar designs. Maybe Falcata : Defiant :: Excelsior : Constitution, for example?

      Could be.
      I'm a little frustrated with people that focus on warp nacelles as tactical liabilities though.
      Even if it's true, it glosses over the many valid and varied reasons to design a ship that way even if it looks like a weakness in combat. (which it probably is).
      However, the vast majority of ships the federation has are not dedicated combat vessels.
      In that light given the likely benefits of distancing the nacelles from the main body of the ship, it also justifies why the defiant pulls them in close;
      Being a dedicated combat oriented design, it's willing to sacrifice performance (and arguably safety, given some of the stated reasons for nacelles being on pylons) to make them a less vulnerable target in a fight.
      You can see the same design reasoning as federation ships also showing up in Romulan (nacelles at the wingtips) and even klingon designs though (Vor'cha class with smaller pylons than a federation ship placed at the extremities of the ship)
      So, if even the Klingons accept a weak point in their warships, the upsides must be fairly significant.

Take the Deffiant's pulse phasers, stick them on an even smaller ship, but with oversized capacitors (relative) and send a few of those in at something. cheap, fast, and glass-cannon/10.

I remember from somewhere that reactors in Star Trek put out more power than most star ships do, so.

    I think I just found my favorite CZcams channel, I loved the model and the way you created a story.
    This is definitely the first of many videos that I will watch.
    The only thing I disagreed with the concept is that the question of designing a small ship is for it to be fast, maneuverable and difficult to hit so I think that the concept of the mother ship having to hit it would be counterproductive because if that is easy the enemy ship too will take advantage of these opportunities, perhaps if the shields channel the energy of the enemy ship to the deflectors and Falcata could use this energy to improve and supercharge the weapons the way you implied, but I loved the video

    very interesting concept, but i have to compare that ship to a magnifying glass - you can get the magnifying glass to concentrate the suns rays but it cant produce any more energy than the sun would be outputting.
    furthering this analogy, the falcata class ship could redirect the phasers fired at it but wouldnt be able to give it any more power unless it came from the falcatas power source

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix Před 4 lety

      In weapons it’s not strictly raw output. It’s that output over time and area. A bullet doesn’t carry much energy generally speaking but it applies it over a tiny area and over a brief amount of time. A basketball can conceivably hit you in the chest with the same force as a 9mm pistol round but we know the results won’t be the same.
