  • You might think you know every ship in the Rebel Alliance fleet, but there are ships in the original Star Wars trilogy that have somehow evaded detection for decades. I've brought three Rebel "mystery ships" to life.

I remember as a teenager excitedly telling my friends (who were also Star Wars fans, played all the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, read the novels etc) about the ships I'd seen studying the Battle of Endor close-up, and how they didn't match with any ships so far depicted in the expanded universe. They just looked at me like I was off my meds.

Finally decided to write my own ideas for these ships. Here you go:
    Rebel Tanker Ship
The CT-39 Ribbon-class Refueling Tanker, also known as the "Golan Ribbon Tanker" or the "Rebel Tanker Ship", was an inflight refueling vessel in service to the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Constructed by Corellian Engineering Corporation though contracted by Golan Ribbon, the vessel was 45 meters in length and had a crew of 20. In 3 ABY following the Battle of Endor, at least three - the Condor Spiral (below), Black Helix (above) and Selonian Den (other) - were present with the medical frigate Redemption and her task force when Commander Luke Skywalker underwent treatment when he lost his hand.
    Rebel Gunship
The Dallin-class Transport, also known as the "Rebel Gunship", was a heavy-duty transport in service to the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Introduced in 50 BBY and constructed by Rendili StarDrive, thousands were made and used in multiple usages from passenger transport, cargo hauler or outlying system patrol craft. The Dallin-class was 62 meters in length and had a crew of between 25 and 50. By the time of the Galactic Civil War, twelve of these ships found their way to the rebellion and were retrofitted with medium-duty laser cannons and torpedo launchers. In 4 ABY, all of these ships were part of the Alliance Fleet that rendezvoused at Sullust and would participate in the Battle of Endor, serving to defend the underarmed GR-75 medium transports and Sullustan cargo freighters. Only seven of the ships - including the Pallas - would survive the engagement.
    Mon Calamari corvette
The MC27 heavy corvette, also known as the "Mon Calamari corvette" or "Mon Cala corvette", was a heavy-duty corvette in service to the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Initially constructed by Mon Calamari Shipyards during the Clone Wars to defend the outlying colonies of the Calamari sector, it was not unusual to see them fighting on either the side of the Galactic Republic or the Confederacy of Independent Systems. They were 245 meters in length and had a crew of 550. Following the Subjugation of Mon Cala, several Mon Calamari corvettes found their way to defend the diaspora fleet, functioning as the only line of defence for the largely underarmed cruisers and transports that escaped the Mon Calamari homeworld, though others remained in service as part of the Imperial occupying fleet. When the Mon Calamari gave their support to the rebellion during the Galactic Civil War, a significant number of these ships served in the Alliance Fleet. In 4 ABY, thirty-five Mon Calamari corvettes - including the Spirit of Lee-Char - rendezvoused at Sullust and participated in the Battle of Endor, working alongside the smaller Marauder-class corvettes, CR90 corvettes, DP20 frigates and Braha'tok-class gunships to defend the larger Star Cruisers and heavy cruisers. Only seven ships were lost in the engagement - including the Quarren Allegiant, which sacrificed itself to disable the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Adjudicator and allow its capture by the MC80 wingless Liberty-type Star Cruiser Amalthea and Neutron Star-class bulk cruiser Longshot.

It's got to be a good feeling knowing your work is being appreciated to that degree

  • @TheBlackBrickStudios
    @TheBlackBrickStudios Před rokem +7

I never really paid much mind to writing headcanons for these ships, but now that I've been doing more Star Wars miniature projects, the ideas have just sort of been coming to me more.
First: Corellian TR10 Long Range Tanker - Originally designed as planetary liquid fuel bus for transportation between ground-based fuel refineries and orbital cargo docks, the TR10 was immediately retrofitted for regional security forces at the outset of the Separatist crisis. The Republic Navy couldn't aid every world, and as such, individual planets' security forces were stretched to the limit, dealing with Separatist incursions on every corner of their borders. Security forces across the galaxy made use of these nimble craft to keep hyperdrive-equipped starfighters fueled and ready for combat, even lightyears away from the nearest star base. These craft were already uniquely suited to the type of guerilla tactics which would soon be employed years later and as such, high ranking members of the Rebel Alliance with prior military history made securing a large number of these invaluable craft from post-war surplus warehouses a top priority.
Second: Rendili B-29 Transport - The prestigious Rendili StarDrive was one of the Republic's foremost starship manufacturers, their success due in no small part to the enduring design of the Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser. Rendili's haughty attitude and traditional design put them constantly at odds with companies like Kuat Drive Yards and Corellian Engineering Corporation. In an effort to combat CEC's ubiquitous Gozanti-class Cruiser, Rendili entered the civilian transport market with the B-29 Transport. Where the Gozanti was designed to act as a semi-autonomous fortress, the B-29 was designed with luxury and heavy, reliable armor in mind. This transport would be designed for nobles and discerning star pilots. The lack of heavy weapons meant that for high profile transport missions, the ship would have to fly with an attaché of starfighters. This was a major drawback which the company hoped their good name and brand recognition would be enough to overcome. As the years drew on, and the Clone Wars came, the B-29 was failing in the open market in favor of the Gozanti. By the time Rendili scored the illustrious Victor Initiative, which would pave their way into returning to the Republic's good graces after losing the naval contract to Kuat, production of the B-29 completely ceased, and what few ships remained on the aftermarket passed from hand to hand, usually losing much of their once impressive hull plating along the way. When the Rebel Alliance came to acquire a handful of these ships from a disgraced noble house forced into hiding by the Empire, they were barely functional. This would not deter their new owners, however, as the rebels could hardly turn down good ship stock.
Third: Free Dac Volunteers Engineering Corps MC20b Star Frigate - Years before the Clone Wars, Mon Cala was a force to be reckoned with in the Outer Rim, and very few planets that found themselves far from the core could resist the tried and true quality of Mon Calamari ship designs. Designed in part by Quarren engineers, the MC20 line was astoundingly popular among anti-piracy forces along Hutt Space. When the Clone Wars finally did break out, the MC20 was seen on both sides, by the Mon Calamari regional forces, and sporadically by the Confederacy and the Quarren who originally designed the ship. Many MC20 units were mass-retrofitted with droid crews in mind, stripping away much of the extraneous space necessary to facilitating an organic species. The bulky, bulbous shapes of the MC20 were slimmed down to the elegant design seen in the MC20b, which was redesigned to field as much raw firepower as possible, while allowing a contingent of droid starfighters to hang along the underside of its large bow section. After the unilateral defeat of the Separatists, most MC20b units were scuttled completely, but some were secreted away to underground forces which hoped to continue the war under a new banner. After helping to negotiate a formal end to the prolonged hostilities between the Mon Calamari and Quarren, Admiral Gial Ackbar ensured that a small fleet of MC20b frigates, ships which once carried the livery of his sworn enemies, would fight side by side with his own forces in pursuit of the restoration of peace and democracy to the embattled galaxy.

    The Auriga-Class Repulsor Tug
Maybe it has variants where you can swap out the fuel tanks for tugs, whether for salvaging or repairs, just a modular support ship that happened to be in a fuel configuration because the Rebellion was (legends) outside of the entire galaxy itself, so, fuel. Yeah. Also Auriga means Charioteer, so, I felt that fitting for the refueler/tug vibe. Clunky, antiquated, but sturdy.

Speed ~ 300-400 km/hr? Slower than TIE bomber and only one engine for thrust.
Hyperdrive ~ Class 5.0 or 3.0? It is a refueler, but it needs to keep up with the Rebel fleet and starfighters in the role you presumed for it.
Able to dock 3 Starfighters at a time (one on each incline on the top of the ship next to the CR90 esque bubbles; one attached underside)
    Crew ~ 1 Pilot, 1 Engineer/Deck Hand/Gas Station Guy, 1 Navigator
    The Aquila-Class Heavy Frigate/Cruiser
The front slopes reminded me of an Eagle's beak, and it does bear resemblance to the Dreadnought-Class (hilariously misleading name) Heavy Cruiser. I believe Aquila constellation holds the star Altair, known as the Eagle, or I'm dead wrong. Maybe it's Aquila that's eagle. Whatever, birds are pretty cool and the Assassin's Creed franchise gets a highlight.
    *Possible Stats*
Speed ~ 700 km/hr? I have no idea, roughly the speed of the Dreadnought-class HC but wikipedia isn't helping me out here.
Hyperdrive ~ 2.0, should healthily keep up or it's not worth even Rebel use.
    No Starfighter complement.
Crew ~ 1,000, more than the MC-30c and a little more than Nebulon-C but under other conventional cruiser crew numbers
    The MC-25 Spear-Class Corvette
It has a balanced but aggressive-capable support armament, as corvettes do, and its frame is narrow like the MC-30 but just vastly scaled down. Could be a variant if MC line is reserved for frigates, cruisers or larger ships, but I don't know how their naming conventions work. Plus the wings and engines could be precursors to later designs, but just experimentally taken out with the MC-30.
    *Possible Stats*
Speed ~ Probably 100 km/hr slower than the D6 Corellian Gunship since it's evidently a frigate and not a corvette.
    Hyperdrive ~ 2.0, nothing fancy.
Might carry 2 Starfighters tucked under, similar to Braha'tok Slap-on landing docks, or one squadron if a hangar is on the underside of the ship between the two wings. Seems too skeletal for that, though.
    Crew ~ 700, less than Nebulon-C and MC-30c.

Late, but I'd say that the Aquila would have a quarter of your suggested crew compliment, maybe not even that, being 63 meters in length. Look at those windows on the model, it gives you the size of one of the decks. At most I'd say it has five, maybe six decks. I'd put the crew at 20~.

it's an alliance assault cruiser. I've seen that ship a million times in empire at war mods.
The alliance assault cruiser mark 1 "was" a refitted dreadnought.
in universe the ship was heavily modernized and refitted to reduce crew requirements.
one could imagine that those dots are gun ports, and when the "original" Rendilli Dreadnought was conceived as its predecessor turrets and armor were added to make it bulkier and more like space battleships from anime.
I figured it was a dreadnought when I watched episode 6.
The last ship is very similar to the Quarren made Recuscant class. The rebellion had recuscants in legends too. I think the Recuscant was specifically made as a call back to that ship. in universe a Moncal refit of a destroyer designed to be crewed only by small numbers of b1s makes sense.

Okay, I'm thinking bottom turret is a single light or medium turbolaser, missile launchers more likely than torpedo tubes I'm thinking due to the size, anti-fighter armament likely would consist of dual laser cannons (light or medium) and the extra weapons front in addition to the ordinance tubes would probably be similar (small laser cannon turrets with limited traverse). Not allot of space for crew 25 - 30 + supplemental droids tops I'm thinking. Mid to low grade hyperdrive (Class 3 or 2 in the Legends rating system) with a range comparable to a CW era Gozanti.

Is it just me, or does the Mon-Cala cruiser look like the Gymsnor 3 light freighter?

This is a really unique concept! I love it! Would love to see more of this kinda content where you flesh out something barely even thought about!

This is amazing work you did. I always noticed these ships in the background whenever I watched the movies but nobody ever said anything on it. It was a shame that nobody noticed them all these years because they can be worthwhile ships in some star wars game or scenario. Especially the Mon Cal Corvette. It makes sense that Mon Cal has other ships other than their big cruisers for example. Having tanker ships or armed transports also make sense.

    First one:
Looks very much like a product of CEC to me. Maybe instead of a starfighter refueling ship though, it resupplies the medium sized vessels of the fleet (I.E. the ones too large to land within a carrier, but too small to have extended fuel capacities of their own). The scene it shows up in could hint at its role as well: maybe it hauls bacta.
    Next up:
Rendili Stardrive Medium Freighter, modified. Sized between the Falcon and the Wild Karrde, with armament to match. The personal ship of some previously unmentioned independent captain who signed on with the Rebellion.
    Lastly:
MC20d/MC25d Mon Calamari heavy corvette. The heavy corvette designation and -d subtype are wartime refits, as vessels of this class previously served as personal liners for those in prominent positions, such as system/planetary officials.

I love what you've done here. The Mon Cal Corvette is my favourite and I love the tanker ship to. I can definitely see these in Star Wars canon. Good job.

Fun stuff - love these forrays into the obscure edges of the Star Wars universe. And as always, solid model work.
