    This is more of a retroactive detail more than anything, but, Jyn Erso's theme shows up in A New Hope and it plays when Luke says he can't get involved, and then it shows up again at the end of Return of the Jedi right as the celebration song begins. I guess its possible Michael Giaccino took inspiration from these little bits from each soundtrack and retroactively made it into Jyn's theme. I like this detail as it feels like a reminder of what the Rogue One crew died for, after all, the official name for that leitmotif is: Jyn Erso & Hope Suite.

    • @FilmScoreMedia
      @FilmScoreMedia Před rokem +61

      This is a classic melody called Dies Irae which has been use by composers (including John Williams quite often) since at least the thirteenth century. Giacchino purposely utilized it throughout Rogue One as a reference to it's frequent use in A New Hope, and to represent the inevitable sacrifice of the protagonists. It's commonly used in classical music and film scores, and throughout the entire Star Wars saga, to represent tragedy or death in general. You can read more about it here:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dies_irae
      In fact, originally it was used to underscore the Binary Sunset scene, before it was rewritten to incorporate what is now known as the "Force theme":

Red 2, Wedge...wanted him as Rogue 3 originally, which is funny because on the death star run, the squadron XO took commands from 5...everyone knew Luke was in command and everyone knew he was the only one who had a chance at succeeding.
      The real answer to why the ships looked old and battle worn in the battle is because of several things. #1 carbon scoring from 2/3 of the battle that we never got to see...we never got to see Red squadron and Gold Squadron intercept 2 star destroyers and wipe out a huge portion of their fighter compliment while disabling a 3rd star destroyer before it could launch. We never got to see the actual approach to the death star where they had to drop through 2 or 3 waves of fighters. The death star launched a few hundred foghters at them. In reality less than 9 fighters actually made it to the trench itself and only 3 pulled away. 2 X-wings and a Y-wing. Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, and Keyan Farlander in the Y-wing...

    The starfighter sequence in the Battle of Yavin also has a lot of continuity errors, specifically with the X-Wing Luke is flying. The X-Wing he hops into in the Yavin hangar has a solid red stripe on the side, but in battle he is flying an X-Wing with a broken stripe as well as two wing stripes (Red 2) or five wing stripes (Red 5). The canopy color (your escape pod) also varies from light blue to gray. What makes the X-Wing inconsistency really interesting to me is that a lot of the scenes were added in the special edition, and someone I guess decided NOT to make the markings match the original versions.
    They also re-used the "fly-by" 2-second clip in the trench like 4 times in quick succession towards the end when it's Luke versus the TIE fighters.

    I love when star wars feels like a real setting with real procedural details and everyday grounded technology. Loved the heck out of Andor for that. I wish more of the disney era would go with this vibe rather than the Marvel Movie superhero vibe.

    Love it! Hope you make more on the OT and the PT. I knew maybe half of what’s here, and usually chalk it up to non-narrative reasons, but this video was well thought through and presented.

    So crazy how ahead of it’s time the care for consistency and authenticity was on those first three movies. Today having entire teams of concept artists, designers and art directors is commonplace but back then it was really unique to have brought together so many core passionate people.
    The only example I can think of where you had the right people at the right place is The Matrix, District 9 and more recently Max Max: Fury Road.

    There's actually a link between Star Wars and Ben Hur.
    The original Storm Trooper boots were made by Anello & Davide, the same company that made the sandals in Ben Hur (also they were responsible for the icon "Beatles boots" as worn by The Beatles (obvs)).
