  • We might think that we've seen every ship in Star Wars... but there are always new discoveries! In this case, possibly an entirely new variant of TIE fighter.

So regarding the "Dark stripe" down the middle denoting it as the Emperor's guard, the Bad Batch finale did this too! During the epilogue sequence where Nala Se is delivered to the imperial base, she is accompanied by Clone Commandos with a similar grey stripe on their armor. Behind the scenes material refers to these Clones as "Royal Guards". So it's nice to see that little bit of consistency.
Also for Legends fans? The name of that base is "Mount Tantiss." Do with that info what you will.

Imagine if this TIE variant replaced the "TIE Scout" in canon, it would've served as a better explanation to how Ben made it to Exegol with seemingly just a TIE fighter. It would've made sense too since plenty of these were clearly stationed in the Death Star 2 when it got destroyed. And given that Ben is an excellent pilot, we could infer that he'd studied the history of TIE variants and knew exactly which one he should find in the Death Star 2's wreckage...

When you said the bit about them participating to devastating effect in the Battle of Endor, I thought about the F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat of WWII.
The Hellcat looks quite similar to the Wildcat, and apparently some Japanese pilots mistook it for such, attempting maneuvers that the older and slower Wildcat couldn't keep up with only to find the Hellcat still on their tail and firing at them.
I can just imagine a Rebel pilot in the heat of battle assuming its a standard TIE/ln and underestimating it, perhaps thinking it lacks shields so a glancing blow should be enough to finish it off.

I played the X-Wing flight simulator extensively when I was a kid, and it felt so authentic that I often have to remind myself that the durability of the Alliance fighters was probably exaggerated for the benefit of the player. So, I have a knee-jerk reaction with a comment like "a somewhat improved TIE Fighter was devastating to B-Wings" because the B-Wing in that game was an absolute tank. Fun fact: the Y-Wing was my ultimate TIE Fighter hunter because its cannons were so close together and center-line that a dual-blast would almost always hit with both, instantly killing a TIE Fighter in one volley.
Of course, I played my fair share of the TIE Fighter simulator, in which I killed many Alliance ships in nothing more than an upgraded TIE Fighter with shields. The TIE Interceptor was a beast. The TIE Defender and Missile Boat were power-creep monstrosities.

I think its safe to say that George Lucas' personal investment of his own imagination and creation of lore has long since been surpassed by nerds everywhere.
I think the truth is simply that his model makers were trying to break the monotany and throw a little variety in while putting these models together. They knew, at that time, that their little trilogy was a success, but I don't think even they were trying to will a ficticious universe into existence. I also don't think they had a backstory for every varying detail that set aside one ship from another.
I would say George is both proud and a little embarrassed at the way people have taken the reigns on this story and run with it.

@@The_JohnnieWalker And there lies the problem.
Generally speaking, the Star Wars audience is only interested in the cinematic material. When you start creating novelizations, you eliminate a huge chunk of the audience. There is a niche audience who embraces the books or comics or whatever alternative medium there is, but its a niche audience. When you start adding characters and content to the movies that have backstory rooted in the alternative mediums, then you abandon the audience who isn't going to have read or observed that material.
Marvel has been making this same mistake with their movies, as of late. In order to keep up with character arcs, now you are expected to watch the crappy series that are produced for Disney Plus. Its a bad plan for appealing to the widest audience.
Star Wars original trilogy did everything right to completion within those three movies. We didn't need any further development in characters or plot. And building some of these characters reteoactively....cough cough....Boba Fett, is just cheap fan service.

I really think he added the episode 4 later on.

The reason that the Royal Guard decided to keep a low profile was because they didn't want to draw angry Corellian Corvettes or Gunships down upon them.

The TIE-VGs stayed outside the Death Star II during the Emperor's visit to shepherd the swarms of TIEs orbiting the station, as following the defections of Kasan Moor, Crix Madine and other Imperials, the Emperor was becoming increasingly aware of not only the rebel threat but other factions emerging within the Empire who wished him dead, wishing to reshape the Empire in their image, most notably amongst the increasingly downtrodden Imperial Navy who often bore the brunt of heavy engagements with the Rebellion.

Along with the B-wing, I thought the Tie fighter and several of its variance wasn't very well designed. With only 30° of visibility off to the front of the craft it would seem easy to sneak up on.

It would have S-foils. Yes. On a capital ship. It would basically be designed with all its heavy weapons on fixed mounts, and all its turrets for anti-fighter/bomber purposes, and would be focused on being very fast and maneuverable for a capital ship, with an operational goal of getting behind other, larger vessels and firing all its fixed heavy batteries and torpedoes right up their -bums- engines.
