- Before the Klingons had the iconic D7, there was actually another Klingon vessel! I try my best to extrapolate an abstract 2D shape into a full-fledged vessel worthy of the Klingon fleet.

It kinda looks like a Romulan bird-of-prey from the rear. I don’t know if this was intentional, but it fits nicely with the implied 23rd century alliance between the Romulans and the Klingons.
Exactly what I was thinking
There was always the fact that when B’rel first did show up in search for Spock The enemy for that was originally Romulans. It’s been theorized that given the bridges design it was actually originally stolen from the Romulans by the Klingons
edit: i think i meant to say bridges instead of barrels. i blame voice to text.
That's because the original Romulan model was made using a repurposed Klingon hull.
That's a dumb fan theory
@@procyon6370 How so?
It looks like a TOS-era Klingon ship and it looks good. Once again, I have to say that you have outdone yourself!
"What Klingons call a scout ship, other will call a Battlecruiser." - Andorian saying. :)
Really nice design, I could easily see this in a Star Trek series.
Suggestion: Maybe design some Andorian ships - I think Andorians didn't get enough love in the series so far...
But that would also be 100% fan fiction. There's only 1 canon Andorian ship: the battlecruiser from ENT.
@@ChesterRico There is a second, I believe as part of the Andorian fleet in ENT Kir'shara, but it is a CG model that got used for a few ships, just "repainted" for Andorian service, so really isn't anything special to the Andorians

@@FltCaptAlan It is the reuse of a ship model that has been used before on Star Trek. I don't recall Enterprise or also Voyager.
It's interesting that every species across the galaxy briefly had a preference for uncluttered, elegant starship design during that particular era.
What I find weird is that Klingons during this time suddenly decided to name all of their ships using human letters and numerals.
@@exilestudios9546 I think that's a translation or Earth/Federation designation - much like in the Cold War the Soviet names and NATO designations were different
@@exilestudios9546 Well in Universe they probably named them after Klingon numbers and letters and the Universal Translator just autocorrects them.
@@A407RAC see i thought that too and discovery season 1 even seemed to confirm that when a ship that was clearly not a classic D7 but was roughly the same size was classified as such by a shuttle computer and then is season 2 that gets thrown out the window when l'rell shows off the iconic D7 as we know it and calls it a D7 in plain english
@@shinyagumon7015 it's one of those things that gives you headaches like how usually the translator ignores proper nouns, and huge swaths of klingon just for the sake of flavor, anytime you can guess what a word means from context, translator is like 'nah let's leave that untranslated' and additionally, when a non-klingon KNOWS a few words of klingon and speaks them, the klingons listening are aware the translator is not currently doing that... so.. ummm.. hey look over there! Well, technically speaking, battlecruisers ARE scouts. Incredibly heavy scouts, yes, but still scouts. After all, both the British and German navies employed their battlecruisers as scouting elements ahead of the main fleet body during the First World War. The Battle of Jutland, for example, saw Admiral Beatty's Battlecruiser Fleet operate as an advance guard and scouting force for Admiral Jellicoe's Grand Fleet while Admiral Hipper's battlecruiser-led Scouting Force served the same role for Admiral Scheer's High Seas Fleet.
The high speed and powerful armament of battlecruisers actually make them excellent scouts, since they are able to steam ahead of the fleet with the more traditional scouts, such as light cruisers and destroyers, while maintaining enough firepower to fight for information and draw the enemy into an unfavorable match up with the main force.
True and if this ship is really the Klingon equivalent of a heavy scout ship, perhaps along the lines of a German Moltke-class or Seydlitz it would explain why the Klingons considered the Constitution-class to be a battlecruiser as if this ship has a heavier emphasis on armor and speed over fire power and speed to the federation equivalent then taking on The Enterprise one on one would be a tricky problem, not impossible is the Germans proved but without Admiral Beatty‘s inexplicable choice not to fire at long range, well most times he who fires first with the biggest gun wins.
Sounds like you guys think of kingons as having the same scouting mentality as House Steiner from BattleTech, who are memetic in sending 100 ton Atlases as a scout lance, when the 'mech is not remotely intended for that role.
The planned American Lexington-class battlecruisers were also intended to be the core of a 35-knot scouting force as well, accompanied by the Omahas and the Clemsons.
@@diabreon3094 Are you questioning the great intellect of House Steiner nobles? Why, I've never heard such sacrilege! :^)
Interesting take, especially as the German battle cruiser element in the Battle of Jutland was literally called ‘The First Scouting Group’.
Glory to you, EC Henry, and your House.
This is a beautiful TOS Bird of Prey type design.
In real life there were "glass cannon" battle cruisers that were extremely dangerous if they fired first, but could not survive a fight with actual battleships.
A lightly armored ship with A lot a firepower would be a perfect Klingon design
in naval cricles these ships are refered to more as "large cruisers" or "cruiser killers" as their sort of 'subtype' of the battlecruiser, heavier battlecruisers designed to actually win fights with rival capital ships did exist (HMS Hood is a good example of one)
The D-type Cruisers,
The Raptor frigates,
The Bird of Prey scout ships,
These three are the backbone of the Klingon Fleet.
There are a lot of fasa designs as well. Just search up fasa Clingon ships on Google or yt. Resurrected starships I'd a yt channel that goes over se of them.
@@zetoboogaloo8802
Those are all era-specific though. Like the Negh’Var and Laneth’s ship. The backbone stays through it all.
Plus, most of the FASA ships are kind of bland or over-done.
Go for it, make hypotheticals or do concept art versions. The concept for the Enterprise D and C are glorious and deserve to be seen restored.
I would love to see a CGI version of the original C design. I love how it looks as is, but the original concept art is such a perfect bridge between D and B.
Trekyards did a video with Andrew Probert on the Enterprise C design, with a nice CG model of it iirc.
original Enterprise C exists in STO, they call it the Narendra Class

Ee come in peace, shoot to kill.
Hello. We come in peace, shoot to kill.
great design, fits in beautifully with established design language.
While not a "mystery" ship, the SS Aurora from TOS "Journey to Eden" feels like fertile ground for a re-interpretation. while the ship was meant to be a Federation civilian transport, the original model was the very alien Tholian ship, just backwards and with a pair of warp nacelles attached. the Remastered version used a modification of the J-type freighter created for the Remaster of "Mudd's Women" (i don't recall if in the original version of "Mudd's Women" had the ship as anything more than a point of light). i'd love to see a redesign of the Aurora keeping the Tholian kitbash silhouette but made out more in line with Federation ascetics.
It's a glorious day to Live when EC Henry uploads another mystery ship video!
I like your design here, it's both sleek while also retaining that model look we all love from TOS.
I really like it. Looks a little valdore-influenced with the bridge section. I can kinda see it as being a common ancestor to the later Romulan ships (perhaps in addition to the D7s, the Romulans got a few of these as part of the klingon-romulan alliance in TOS)
This is a gorgeous design. I'd love to see this in STO.
I’d love to see some Stargate or Babylon 5 ships on here
This looks SO good!
Have you thought of looking at the animated series? They’ve referenced some ships that we haven’t seen and there are two dimensional images that are never seen from any other angle. I did a lot of work on the SS Bonaventure (which was used for inspiration in the original Doug Drexler Enterprise design and then the later non-canonical refit)
That's a great idea.
@@MichaelEllisYT The best place to find deep background ships would be to look through the memory alpha "unnamed ships" pages. There are a number of ships that weren't even real "ships" but just part of matte paintings meant to fill out the background. For example there was a rocket/shuttle on a launch ramp on the top of Methuselah's castle in TOS.
A lot of the "ship of the week" designs in Voyager are barely visible and their original CGI models have been lost, so that's something you can look into too.
If Star Trek ships are well documented, I think best thing for you to do is to design your own post TNG era ship taking inspiration from the existing ships, like you did with the pre TOS Pacific ships. That would be really cool to see on the channel. When I say post TNG I mean anything from the day the Galaxy class was brand new up to 32nd Century.
That is really a great ship, doesn't just looks good, it is also a design where the very first thought is "Klingon", even tho you have never seen it before.
I really like this design! However, I always thought the ship was simply wedge shaped with an upper and a lower engine protruding from the aft. I didn't like the remasters replacing it with a cgi D-7!
especially not as we clearly saw a (vaguely) wedge-shaped small Klingon vessel in Enterprise's "Bounty", I really considered this to be the canon explanation for the "glowing shape" ship we saw in the 60ies.
You know what makes me really mad? This ship that you designed looks WAY better than any of the Klingon ships in Discovery.
That's kind of the point though. Before and during the first federation /Klingon war the houses were divided each one with their own ship aesthetics and design philosophy's or to put it simply there was no cohesion between the great houses it wasn't until the federation knocked them on their asses that they started working together and designing the ships we know and love starting with the D7. Now discovery can't take all of the credit for doing this enterprise paved the majority of this lore by establishing that in the pre TOS Klingons had yet to form the KDF and we're basically an empire of raiders not conquers DIS just built on that
@@exilestudios9546 You're right. But Disco is so eager to give the klingons a more alien design, the came up with a lot of different designs, that all looked like ancient mistery vessels and not some state of the Art klingon designs.
Toilets are better designed than the Klingon Ships in STD.
@@RobertWilke They absolutely are!
Star Trek ships of all species where simple elegant designs or at least practical machines for space travel. At least until some strange ships at Voyager and Enterprise. But those where only few exeptions. Disco ships are so eager to be "alien" they are became just comical wobly mess of spikes and pipes and greeble, lazy textured irregular boxes or for the future Federation a bunch of iShips with flying parts everywhere that doesn't make sense at all and just try to be so much cooler than anything to show how mega hyper super "advanced" they are... sad times!
It's not even the first time he's done it. Look up the M'Chla class Bird of Prey Refit in STO. Another EC Henry take that improves on what was presented in Discovery.
This is something I like people to look more into, background ships for other scifi. So here's another; the "steam runner" class vessels seen in the Enterprise series. I think we know they're actually probably just the 3d models for the Steamrunner Class being reused but I've been having thoughts that maybe it's a little closer than expected. Thinking this if you remember the NX Class is an idea used later for the Akira Class to some sources. As for this TOS ship, it fits and it's nice to have more of that fleet filled out. Unsure how you'd do the others from that series though.
Wait, where do we see a steam runner model is Enterprise?
I never noticed it, are you sure you're not mistaking it for the nova, dauntless or prometheus class ships we see at the battle of ptocyon 5?
@@Code_Lin Storm Front Part 2 when Enterprise returns home.
@@StarshipEternity You just gave me a reason to watch one of my favorite series again, thank you.

@@Code_Lin Have fun. :).
IIRC there are like three different profiles of assumed Earth starships in that fleet scene., so Eruc Henry might have his work cut out
Beautiful. Looks like one they would have designed in the 60's
You know... It could actually _be_ a TOS-era Bird of Prey; although it never really shows up often in the TV shows, because there is no real reference to what is up in space, they could be seeing a bird of prey that is upside down in relation to them. Therefore, Bird of Prey. 😁
Or a bop with its wings up....
True, there is no absolute reference to what is up or down in free space.
But things are arbitrarily oriented certain ways on screen in film & television. It's the common writing convention and the common audience expectation. It's even been a tactically decisive element in TOS and TNG (and their movies) a few times.
Tbh, I do recall them calling it a "scout ship", so it could well be a BoP!
Yeah, though I like it better as a TOS era Raptor.
That is true, especially since the B'rel didn't exist yet. The one introduced in Star Trek III is, canonically, the prototype.
When I was a kid I had some TOS on VHS and among others I had Balance of Terror and Friday's Child and I am around 70% sure that the Klingon ship is the shape of a Romulan Bird of Prey but given that neon colouring to hide it.
Beautiful design, and fits so nicely into the lore/history.
Amazing work as always EC. Honestly, it makes sense. What you have can be looked at as both a scout ship and a cruiser (basically a heavy scout ship or light cruiser design). In ST Online, and every other ST game, there are always sets of Klingon ships that are mid rim vessels that have the Bird of Prey or D7 Cruiser coupled together. It can be easily argued that this ship class fulfills both roles to certain extents.
You are a genius. I WISH the current producers of Star Trek cared as much as you to make the design aesthetic make sense within continuity.
Man, you are one of the only guys right now that is making decent sci-fi content. Everyone else seems to just throw shit at the wall and see what sticks; whereas you clearly think everything through so it's actually believable.
This is fantastic. It looks exactly what we expect from the era. This is what we should have had in Discovery Season 1.
I think the dual-classification of both "Scout Ship" and "Battlecruiser" is actually a Klingon doctrinal difference.
Knowing Klingons, I find it totally plausible that they adhere to the idea of "Extreme Force Recon", and consider a Scout to be a spearhead to strike deep into enemy territory, look around, and then make a fighting retreat to report their findings.
This is awesome!
Really neat design! Love the reasoning and deductions behind it, and it's nice to see more "grey-era" Klingon ships. If you ever want new mystery ships, hit me up for some nuBSG info. I've documented ships in the show that the VFX guys have to refuse to acknowledge are there.
Amazing! Thanks for your on-going work!!
Honestly. You need to be the ship designer for any future Star Trek product... Truly remarkable...

This is incredible work. Seeing this come to life was amazing. A great job well done to both of you!
you did very good here; my 6 year old who cant quite read the titles to the videos identified your ship as a klingon ship without being told it was even a star trek ship because it just looks like a klingon ship. I'm so proud of him
Thanks! This is great work! I love how it looks both unique and yet looks consistent with the Klingon design, and the TOS era designs as well, with simple shapes windows.
That's a sexy looking ship design. Feels like it would fit right in, well done.
It's always a highlight for me, to see a video of yours!
It's such a great Klingon designe, just astonishing how you were able to think of it with only that scratch as reference

Absolutely stunning looking vessel!
Thank you, any Star Trek material is greatly appreciated. Love your work.
This is bloody perfect. I love the heck out of these videos. Please keep them coming!
Your imaginative skills are truly off the chart. That rando blur that TOS used on screen looked impossible to actually visualize in 3D, but geezus, you pulled it off and made it 100% believable as to what it actually was. Fantastic!!!! Thank you!
Love your interpretation of that shape you had to work with. Respect! ✊
Believe TOS had quite a few alien ships that was just a blur of spinning lights & simple shape.
And there’s several episodes where they speak of Federation’s ships & starbases and their purpose or class but never see… be cool to see your take on that…
What most people should do .
Awesome work. Love seeing your Trek vessels. I'd love to see you explore vessel design for a species we haven't necessarily seen many vessels from before. You have such a great eye for this!
I really like your creativity on this ship, great job.
You did an excellent job with this model. Stylistically, your extrapolation fits right in with the Original Series look. Keep up the good work!
Great to see you share another great video again!
Although it is hardly my favourite TOS episode, Mudd's Women has Harry Mudd's Class-J Freighter. Now I've seen the revised design for the update SFX but how about examining the originally filmed design and seeing what you can come up with? The redesigns I see tend to be far off from recreating that classic 1960s design aesthetic. Your Klingon scout proves you can do that!
PS: I would love to see a video showing just how _HUGE_ the K'tinga class D-7 replacement truly is.
I don't think people realize how massive it is. It is _not_ a 1:1 remodel or replacement of the D-7. It can be hard to judge the true size going by the windows on the front, as the Enterprise saucer section clearly shows there are 2 levels (ie 2 rows of windows, with the Rec room in the rear port side of the ship clearly being 2 stories/levels in height).
To go by a similar judgement, you can either measure the size via the windows on the crest above the pod, which to judge by the windows has 5 levels (2 rows of windows seperated by solid sections equal in size) or the 2 rows of windows that encircle the pod right above the photon torpedo/plasma generator. I would think that the 2 rows of windows on the pod are a sensor array (to make up for the lack of a sensor dish where the photon torpedo launcher is located), so you can go with the crest.
But there is a more definitive way of measuring the true size by looking closely at the shuttle bay in the rear. Right above the shuttle bay doors is an observation deck. If that deck has to be at least 10 feet in height (ie one story), one can deduce the true size of the ship from there.
Just google "K'tinga rear detail"
EDIT: looking at various model shots, it looks like the windows on the pod above the photon torpedo bay are consistent with the lights/levels on the crest as well as the main body, so it appears that those are indeed 2 levels above the photon torpedo bay.
What an awesome piece of design work!
Your graphic rendering abilities and artistic aesthetic is brilliant my friend!
Always love these. Thanks for doing awesome work
Wow, nice! You're certainly great at making this sort of stuff, it fits so well! It's amazing that you came up with this from such a simple shape
Love this design!!!
looks great!
The thing that's really so truly brilliant about this design is that it lends some explanation to the confusion around both the Romulans and the Klingons having "Birds of Prey" but with different hull designs. The Romulans of course have their "saucer plus nacelles" design, while the TNG-era B.o.P. has its stark green body and downward-angled wings. This TOS-like design looks like it perfectly sits between the eventual evolution to the TNG era Bird of Prey (at least keeping its lines, even if this is meant to be a scout ship) while also looking distinctly adjacent to the TOS Romulan Bird of Prey, as if the Romulans saw this design and approached the Klingon shipwrights to say "great ship, but can you make the middle a saucer?" and got their own design with the "Bird of Prey" name as a result.
Amazing stuff. Love the design.
Love the design! Great work!
What a great design! And it does fit perfectly with that silhouette.
It is stunningly beautiful.
This is amazing; you are amazing. When the shape turned and became a ship, it was absolutely perfect. Well done EC!! CBS or ILM should hire you NOW.
Awesome design! Always love watching your videos!
The WWII ship USS Alaska is listed in various sources as a cruiser, heavy cruiser, armored cruiser, battle cruiser, or carrier escort cruiser. Just an example that ships might be simultaneously referred to by a variety of designations. Also some ships are simultaneously referred to both as a class based on their construction and weaponry, and also by what role the play in the fleet. That later designation would even change when the ship is reassigned to new duties. The long and short being that there have been many instances of a ship being referred to as a scout and a cruiser simply by different people during the same conversation.
That is a thing of beauty. Well done.
Your videos just put a fat smile on my face.
You've just created a better Klingon ship better than the one in movies!

I know this can't be considered a mystery ship since we see it a lot during the last few seasons of DS9, but one could consider it a mystery when you see the size of the Dominion's Battleship relative to the other ships and space stations in Star Trek DS9. In short, is the canon size accurate for it's purpose or is it Star Trek's version of a ISD type I (just a large, overpowered ship)?
Plus, it would be kinda epic to see a dominion warship model next to your other models to see the comparisons between them (especially the Enterprise D) :D
Great video and I love the aesthetic of the bird of prey with the time period! Qapla'!
As always: Great work!
What i love about this are the similarities not only to the Bird of Prey and the D7, but also to the Romulan Warbird from the TOS era
I love it, can’t wait for a lore video about this one.
Fantastic work by all involved. Great design. TOS represent!
Dude, I LOVE your design for that ship! Excellent work.
Also, in response to your bit about Klingon ship designations, let us not forget that sometimes TNG had Klingon birds-of-prey that had the "battle cruiser" designation and were about half the size of a Galaxy-class starship. As it happens, birds of prey that never lowered their wings when going into attack position like their smaller cousins did. So it is conceivable that even in the 23rd Century, this was still true -- the Klingons had birds-of-prey of varying sizes, and your design fits in perfectly.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
You did a great job with this model. It looks fantastic and fits so well with established canon that I didn't realize you made it up until halfway through the vide.
