The Cutest Klingon Ship: The F-5 Frigate

- This week by request of my members i take a look at the Klingon F-5 Frigate from Starfleet battles. while many designs form this game have aged poorly the F-5 bucks this trend, and fits very well into the klingon fleet of the TOS era. but is this forgotten frigate worthy of rememberance?

"Who's the cutest little killer? YOU'RE the cutest little killer! Yes, you are!" 😆
I can't unsee Worf saying that. Lmao.
@@merafirewing6591 its like that meme with worf and the cat
🤣🤣🤣
*happy Targ noises and snorts*
@@venomgeekmedia9886 lmfao!
Even though the Klingon F-5 Frigate is cute, it still has fangs. Imagine a Klingon having the balls of steel to tackle a Jem-Hadar fighter group with four old Klingon F-5 frigates.
This is great
*scribbles notes for illustrator* Cute, smol, with fangs...
I'm sure there is a Klingon Opera written about old Klingons doing just that and dying "gloriously".
Thank you all for the kind thoughts. The F5 was one of my first and best Klingon designs. - Stephen V. Cole PE, designer of SFB.
I like to think the Klingon ship the Enterprise blew up at the beginning of "Errand of Mercy" was an F-5
yeah i think something like that. definitely not a D7 though
Probably also the type of ship playing distraction in Friday's Child.
If I saw that on my view screen I'd get the Klingon Captain on screen and Berate on how cute the ship is. Awwwwwww too cute 🥰
It isnt the size of the ship that matters, but how it's used.
The F5 and its variations, including the F6 "frignaught" are the workhorse of my own small "nation " the 5 Suns Alliance . Deployed in packs of 3-5 with either an F6 or F5L as a command ship.
Riker: “Cute little ship!”
Worf: “Cute?”
This vessel is where the little known Klingon term "Quwaii'" originated.
please no... don't do this!
Senpai was a great warrior.
Klingons were inspired by samurai so it makes sense to carry over the japanese influence. Maybe in the 25th century they start experimenting with genetic augmentation again and we end up with klingon anime catgirls
@@jamesw3413 I don't think that would work as well as you think
Klingopara.
Back in the day, my group tried to combine the starfleet battles rules with the newer fasa rules. What a nightmare.
Oh my lord. I guess that didn't end well...
All Klingon Ships are CUTE! *Draws out knife* I'll fight anyone that dares say otherwise!
And you DARE challenge the honor of a Klingon's Waifu!?!?!?! Them's fightin' words.
8:57 so standard escort/non federation ship tactics in STO.
I have to admit this small ship is as you say cute. As in wolf packs this would be a great tactic. If the Klingon torpedoes in this pack fire at once this would be devastating on target run. Even a constitution would be in trouble quickly.
Yeah 4 photons is a lot of pain.
It's like a Klingon Captains normal size and you see a short Klingons hanging out in the back. They keep saying we are Klingons too. We are capable too just with different tactics.
Starfleet Battles was epic. Maps Paper and Dice
SFB is still being produced.
I really like this design. Wonder if there is a TNG era Klingon equivalent to it. Like a sawed-off Vorcha.
Check out the kron class
It's called the Smolcha.
I wasn't aware either F-5 had been forgotten.
This one is a very large and robust frigate. Not quite a DD, but often used in that role. And fairly capable of it for decades. A notably successful design.
The F6 is the Destroyer, The F5 had a Command/Leader called the F5L.
@@peterbrazier7107 F6 is almost trying to be a war cruiser though. And it's introduced way too late to be of consequence.
F5 compares heavier to most contemporary frigates, and about equal to some of the crappier contemporary destroyers. One of those in-between sizes.
@@vismundcygnus2800 The F6 is a Destroyer, the D6 and D5 are cruisers.
In SFB we call the tactics used here as the Klingon knife fight. Problem with this tactic was federation overloaded photon torpedoes.
stay out of the 8 hex range...i think it was 8 lol
It indeed seems to be a tough little ship, in the recent time I've learned about it, it does appear to be one of the better designs for mid-23rd century Klingon ships to complement the D7. It seems like the Klingon answer to the Saladin, Hermes, and Loknar.
Perhaps we may one do see one in a piece of official audio-visual media.
15:16 ; Venom do not tempt them like that! It is akin to sailing through Kos'karri infested waters with extra blooded Gagh.
Wouldn't rate it against loknar you'd really need an L6 to take on loknar. We can hope to see it...
LITTLE?
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Loknar ... My favorite close tie with Defiant.
This ship reminds me of that meme of a cute little snake saying:
"NO! I R Danger Noodle! No boop snoot! Fear me!"
While being D'aaaaawd at. :)
A wonderful little ship a half way house between the later and much smaller birds of prey and the D7, but still fast, agile and well armed. Are you ever going to have a look at things like the ships in Klingon Academy as there was some nice KDF ships there.
Maybe the ones that have up do date models as the originals are now pretty rough.
It looks like a d7 ran into a wall
it was chasing road-runner
@@venomgeekmedia9886 let me guess that roadrunner happens to bear the name Enterprise?
Ahhh the baby D7 😃 it's like baby Tiger Luchs 😃
Always loved the SFB ships.
Boo yeah
i hope you enjoyed it
I always loved this little ship. Even when I wasn't playing the game, something always made me pick up and play with the pewter figure. I always felt the Bird of Prey from Star Trek III was inspired by it.
After the praxis explosion wluld the klingon see any hounor in or or maybe some value in ising old f5 as frieghters with gun and heavy hauls and shields?
The F-5 really looks like the pathfinder for the Bird of Prey. The F-5 was a big stick while the Bird of Prey was a more refined spear. They both do the same job but the Bird of Prey does it so much better. As for cute...I wouldn't say that to the face of Klingon who served on one. Just might wreck your day.
I much prefer the Klingon F-5 presented in Starfleet Command (old PC game that was based on Starfleet Battles...mostly and used the the movie era aesthetic). Looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey, but beefier. Granted, it's not cute like this one haha, but overall I think it's a much better look.
Not sure I'll have a look.
There's also the Klingon attempt at upgrading the F5 into a heavy frigate, the F6 "Frignaut", of which only 3 were built.
Another Klingon adhoc warship was the E5 Battle (Fleet) Escort destroyer, which used the command bulb of the F5, the neck of the E4 escort frigate, the hull of the E4 and a single D7 S-Graph warp nacelle. Only 6 were built. Rendered obstelete by the introduction of the D17 & L9 destroyers.
Birb of prey. Venom I'd love to see you make a new version of the battle of binary stars fleets for the Klingon empire and Federation fleets of that period. Canon designs( with some FASA/Starfleet Battles/Star Trek Legacy allowed to fill the blanks).
Yeah, a more period accurate version of the Battle of the Binary Stars.
i mean thats basically the 4 years war... and apart from the axanar d6 there aren't really any other designs from that period.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 updated Enterprise era ships( mainly on the Klingon side) and but yeah. But there's also fleet makeup and uses as Discovery kinda went the Gundam SEED style of beam light show without thinking of how the ships interact as classes.
If you wanted to go full nuts on things, you could always start doing a play by play of the General War (of Star Fleet Battles). Truly drive yourself nuts trying to make all those small ships look different and have an interesting perspective and lore.
Then have battles with hundreds of them.
Do like how you were able to icnorporate the Klingon Sabre Dance into their tactics (overrunning things). That's nice! No drones though (but guess huge missile racks don't quite make sense otherwise)
The concept art for the battle is probably the better alternative. The designs and composition actually look beautiful in there instead of a garbled, unlit, gribbly mess
Oh, look at the cute ( icekel) frigate. She's so cute
Ahhh, the General War. That which lead to all the galactic empires being able to field fleets of hundreds of ships readily. To coordinate wars thousands of parsecs away. The amount of focus put on logistics, maintenance..
And even learning how to streamline builds and ships to make them able to be pumped out faster. You don't -really- need that light cruiser to have a lifespan of more than twenty years.. It doesn't need those ten different specialized labs.. Strip those out, you can build it in two thirds of the time!
Take a destroyer, remove the bits focused on exploration, secondary and redundant systems, throw some more phasers on it, call it a war destroyer build.
Yeah bit of a wacky timeliness although we see a lot of those ideas in the dominion war.
It does look like it shares a lineage with early bop-like 22nd Century Klingon ships. But with a cruiser centric design philosophy and due to mass production of the era. It looks like it would make for a tough little ship, in large part because of those cruiser parts and for not actually being so little, but compact and surprisingly graceful. It would have been pointless to have upgraded its design in the same way as the D7 became the K't'inga, that would have made the F5 into a brick, even more of a pocket cruiser than it already is. Clearly, the B'rel is almost a quantum leap in technology and design, and somehow speaks to Klingon ethos in a way that most of their ships did not.
I liked the idea of the Klingons struggling and even succeeding at the mass production arena of the cold war for a time. One might imagine that both the Klingons and Starfleet were cranking out lots of variants sharing cruiser components, but that the Federation would win in the end due to more advanced manufacturing processes by the movie era.
Klingon KAWAII DESU!!! ^.^
Couldn't resist. Nice little video, and cheers to the F5! we barely knew her!
The F-6 'Frignaught' is a scary little ship
I kinda feel that the B'Rels wouldn't necessarily be the death knell of the F5. Especially after the attacks on Kittamer and Neranda III. Their current, of the time Battlecruiser was inadequate against Warbirds, and the houses were still building hell out of the K'Tinga, so an F5 refit would have been a no brainer for internal security. Something you could even use to update the auxiliary forces like the Kreosian Volunteers. Yes, it's not as deadly as a B'Rel, but a Squadron of these jumping the cloaked warbird they've been tracking, would probably ruin the Romulan's day.
Played SFB growing up in the 80s. The f-5L was more than a match for any frigate in the game. I'm biased I love the Klingon.
There ain't nothing "Cute" about the F-5. That thing is a hard little war machine.
As I understand it the plane F5 is named Tiger and is cool plus I’m almost sure but in the 1st Top gun the film makers used this plane as the Russian Mig, please shout out to me if I have any of this information in error, I’m not a top gun film fan. But I used to have knowledge on military aircraft however now it’s just StarTrek.
Not an error, it's designated MIG-28, a model of Mikoyan craft that doesn't exist. The F-5s we're by the USN as aggressor Trainors at the time and it made sense to just paint them up and call them migs then try to find actual Mig fighters to match the Navy Tomcats.
@admiralsnackbarkekwalice6167 didn't top gun , in the training scenes use a French fighter. To simulate the Russian aircraft ? ( I know the name it's on the tip of my tongue) mirage ?
I also love the stealth field to prevent accurate intel. The ship has a built-in blur censor!
I always liked the Star fleet battles ships.
I was not expecting a KanColle/Trek crossover, but here we are dess ne
I still have my F5 frigate from Task Force Games. Probably circa 1987.
Back then it was armed with disruptors and type II phasers. No photons. But I wouldn’t dismiss a variant that did.
Cool I love seeing these oddball starships
I'm not sure if you're honest about no lewding the F5 (not thinking of the Streisand Effect) or doing this as a double bluff to _get_ people to lewd the F5? 🤔
no i just no my community well... i know there are azur lane fans among the audience
@@venomgeekmedia9886 who might just do it just to spite ya just saying.
I can't help feeling that Klingon crews assigned to an F-5 would consider this a bit of a "diss", somehow...
A lot more chance for glory though.
15:15 ok, ok, ok! But hear me out; what if we just put smol little cat ears on the bridge section?🐈
Staph
It's a cute ship all right. Tiny little killer
Interesting ship...I can see the logic of it!
@Venom Geek Media 98 I love Star Fleet Battles. Wish I could find others in my area to play as well. Well done! Any chance on doing the Federation CL?
I think boom and zoom is more accurate description of this tactic.
In Starfleet Command this is the D5 .The variant you are talking about is the F5.I did play 1 and 2 EAW and OP.
Been really digging your channel! Using your material to help me create my own D6 Star Trek tabletop game!
The ship that it would run into later more often which could be argued to be better would be the Miranda.
Well by the time the miranda entered service the F5 was falling out
@Venom Geek Media 98 I agree more importantly I think Miranda is a major reason why they would have pushed to retire. They were too similar, but I believe Miranda was superior. Back that up with starfleet production and the Klingons start to have issues.
That is one serious set of mixed up timelines!
4:41 Klingons defend The Empire.
Its a Chibi-Frigate!
Looks like a Klingon Shuttlecraft
Last year EC Henry did a video on the Mystery Klingon ship from Friday’s Child. Flip it up side down and give it a bullet nose and the F5 isn’t that far off.

This would be an interesting opportunity, if could be found on the surplus market. Both as a Colony guard dog and a pirate/ privateer refitted with some substantial improvements to the older tech.
Just a thought,
Wolfmama
As I understood it, SFB could only get the license rights to TOS era and that's why all their ship designs stay within that timeframe.
Well it was made in the 70s before any of the movies came out
@@venomgeekmedia9886 I know, I was there. 😉
I love Klingon ships . If used right they are very dangerous.
Know your enemies to better defeat them .
It is a good day to make them die .
Glory to the Empire.😎
Use the d5 agility and electronic war fair to be a guerilla attacker.
You had me at smol
Another great video.
Two f5s and a F 5 leader are a dangerous combo. Toss in meck links and psudo fighters 2 per F5 . You have trouble.

G-2 POLICE GUNBOAT is cuter and smaller.
The standard F5 has 2 Phaser 2s on the boom, 3 Phaser 2s aft, a Disruptor torpedo on each wing and a Drone launcher .
Constitution Class has 6xPhaser 1s and 4 Photon Torpedo launchers on the saucer, 2xPhaser 3s on the Engineering hull and a Drone launcher on the Engineering hull.
I play SFB.
"Looks like a smaller T-3 Mover assualt ship to me? 😕"
That's right baby - Star Fleet Battles - one of the best games ever. It can be very - very rules heavy depending on how in depth you want to get with a combat tactic board game - but it's fun.
You think the F-5 is a cutie - just check out the E-class ships in SFB.
If you love Venom Geek Media 98 and his sexy ass ship talk - you will really get into Star Fleet Battles.
The F5 never carried a torpedo all the variants had the sensor dish
I was always a fan of the F6 Battle Frigate.
Nice video sad to see how it ended up though but given the F5 size the Klingons could have converted for civilian use and and converted them into light cargo ships or even a tractor tug
Yeah quite possibly they could have been bought by the great houses

Remember that there were actually two types of IRL F-5's the F-5A Freedom Fighter that had no radar and the more capable F-5E Tiger II with a Radar both were very capable in good hands
Both were Aim-9 only day fighters very simple but if you needed fighter's and weren't in too much danger they were perfect nothing better than a Mig-19(F-5A) Mig-21/Mig-23MS (F-5E)
You just kept saying F-5 b
Yeah it's a cool fighter very sharp. But it seems to go forgotten between the phantom and tomcat
Don't forget about the F-5G!
The F-5G wich was for Taiwan and was to be AIM-7/BVR capable wasn't made but it became the F-20A same concept but naver made it into service with any country because the United States were only for a brief period interested in a export fighter and even in this period more and more country's were getting approved for the F-16A the only real interest in the F-20A was because it was better than nothing
Fyi the F-16/79 was a less capable export F-16A/B airframe
It served the empire with honor.
Starfleet Battles for the win. I love that game.
Do the Frignaught!
Chibi-D7. Kawai.
Thanks!
Glad you like it
if you can keep thesame nacelles, sensor elements and weapons on an F5 as a D7
what's the point of the bigger, more expensive ship????
Awww!
So the Tie Fighters are hiding in the planetary shield?

You dared announce getting turned into a wiafu
6 pseudo fighters have the fire power of a cruiser the various types of PF s create a pack of wild cards.
To me the F-5 looks like it was designed by Volvo. "Don't you feel safe knowing your Klingon vessel was made by Deutschland engineering?" But you just know that the klingon crew inside just hates this ship and hates themselves being on it. I want to see a Star Trek lower decks show where we have the Klingon versions of Boimler, mariner, and the rest of the cast on this ship. It would be Hilarious!
Volvo is a Swedish company... but yeah it's a decent candidate for a lower decks ship
Ok now I really want someone to turn the F5 into a Waifu just to bug VGM XD
don't do it...
@@venomgeekmedia9886 this might be the right time to pick drawing back up after all these years :P
for uhm... unrelated purposes of course ;)
maybe
How can the F-5 be the cutest when it shares a continuity with the E-4 Escort?
Also, a bit misleading since you _don't_ describe it within its actual continuity, but in some frankenstein headcanon of your own. And a version of the F-5 that doesn't exist in _SFB,_ either, since _SFB_ Klingons armed their ships with missiles ('drones,' in that game's parlance; Klingons having a tendency to mount their launchers in the shuttle bay,) disruptors, and phasers.
I wouldn't say the E5 is as cute since it's only a mono nacelle design. I maybe should have mentioned the sfb continuity. But I don't see the prime universe version being that different.
F5 sounds like a harassment ship.
Was that federation freighter the antares type one ?
Yes
@@venomgeekmedia9886 cool
Looking forward to the Waifu version..
I think the F5 could have been used as a convoy escort ship after the brel took over expolit
That is the duty of a frigate.
yeah potentially a little more defensively oriented and leaving attack to b'rel
Jolan Tru. There is no cute Klingon ships. Try telling the captain of a F-5 that his ship is cute. Granted I see them as target practice, but the thing is , if you see a baby Klingon warship, their mother is not far away. It was a poor man's bird of prey. Even the Klingon admit it was inferior to the Romulan counterpart, which is why they replace it quickly with a Romulan inspired vessel.
well the klingons would argue that the B'rel drew more on the 22nd century bird of prey rather than any romulan designs.
This is ther cat staship[ and yes I know there are literal cat aliens in trek but cute tiny and a predator is very cat.
I'd say the A4 is a cute fighter lol
