- The TIE Fighter has a very interesting real-life backstory. And it turns out... the very first TIE design actually made it into Star Wars canon.

This man will never stop making amazing content just because it looks kinda cool
This isn't content. This is art!

"Bold And Brash"? More Like "Belongs In-

masterpiece
I love this era of star wars where the empire is still establishing itself and the vehicles and equipment that we see as iconic are still taking shape while the galaxy is still reeling in post-war times. The absolute best in my opinion
Yeah it is cool though it only lasts for like a little over a year lol (at least for the ties and Star destroyers)
@@chewy99. yeah it's one of the things that really annoyed me about fallen order. It's supposed to be only five years after ROTS but everything is pulled from the rebels era or the original trilogy (tie interceptors, rebels at-ats, only isd-I's), like come on show us some cool stopgaps on the way. It's fun to explore that kind of thing
Agreed, my favorite era other than the KOTOR2 post-purge era
@@coltnichols4502
That's because Fallen Order is based on DisneyCanon where all the Imperial hardware basically just magically appeared out of thin air to replace all of the Clone Wars hardware literally the day after Palpatine declared the Empire.
Legends was a lot better with this since in that continuity the Empire still used Acclimators and Venators early on, with the only distinctively Imperial ships around at the start being the Victory I Star Destroyer and Belator Dreadnought. And even those ships had an excuse - the Victory I was first produced at Byss as part of a secret project, and first deployed at the Battle of Coruscant. And the Belator is really just a Mandator II refit with very little visual distinction from its predecessor.
Everything you make is just drop dead gorgeous. Would love to see these implemented in more stories with the weight the deserve
We hear you
Having multiple prototype variants kinda reminds me a bit of Northrop's Tigershark.
The first prototype had the F-5E canopy, as well as not having a fully functional avionics suite.
Later on in life, the second and third prototpes appeared (with the larger canopies), and the first prototype was later fitted with the proper radar and INS.
A lot of interwar military aircraft had fairly visible differences between models. Interwar aircraft in general are just an interesting topic.
@@SephirothRyu Indeed.
Very nice - as always.
Perhaps the reason that the single piece bubble canopy was replaced could be to allow for sections of the canopy to be replaced individually as they were damaged. The cost saving could be significant when scaled up to a massive fleet of fighters.
Potentially one more design flaw that was perfected, in later iterations.
I'm trying to imagine a situation where a part of the canopy gets damaged that doesn't involve the destruction of the entire TIE fighter. Clumsy mechanics? 😃
How often would a TIE survive in a situation where the canopy is damaged? Since the pilots are on suit-based life support, you're not too worried about decompression, but it isn't as if a TIE fits any useful definition of 'sturdy.' And directly behind that canopy is the pilot; anything that penetrates the canopy is probably going to make the pilot's day in the worst possible fashion.
@@boobah5643 I mean, we're the Empire. We don't care about the pilots. They're the cheapest part to replace, and they give a modicum of armor in the cockpit to the engines in the back 😃

Any hope that Colin's Y-wing and Joe Johnston's X-wing might get a similar treatment? Heck even Joe Johnston's Y-wing? There are so many cool designs there. I'd love to see your interpretations and head canon for them.
Its always a good day when EC Henry uploads a video.

Okay then. Maybe I'll consider it. 40+ hours a week every week for me then. ;(
That cover art in the opening makes me wish we could have seen a movie adaptation of Foundation in that 1970s sci-fi style.
It makes me happy when EC Henry reimagines the most random star wars ships.
I'd love a video where he showed us a fan-ship that he came up with himself. Not a variant, like his landing TIE fighter, a fully original design.
@@anzaca1 Same, I'd love to see what he can come up with.
That is awesome.
Let's face it! EC Henry is from an alternative universe and has been showing us its version of Star Wars the entire time with all the nice renders, animation and artwork.
Joke aside, always a great pleassure to see your renders and background stories, you are doing us fans a great service
0:02 RF-3, It's the Y-Wing! :D
I've always thought it reminded me of naval torpedo bombers, I'm so glad I now have it confirmed for myself
In the words of Dooku, "I've been looking forward to this..."
You should add the fact that this tie fighter prototype was notorious for the cylinders connecting the solar panels to the bubble canopy breaking off, it was then later fixed in the final production version
Good to see that Cantwell's prototypes are finally getting recognized!
I've always been a fan of RetroScifi and because of this I've been a huge fan of Collin Cantwells designs for many years now! I'm loving the fact that he's now getting recognition!
For me, I was thinking of a cross between a TIE Interceptor and the Chiss Clawcraft.
"That's the thing about the Chiss... they don't just steal your technology, they make it better."
-quote is from The New Essential guide
to Vehicles and Vessels under the Clawcraft entry.
I'm pretty sure that design called the "Stingray" eventually became the A-wing.
your sort of making a really cool protoype era of star wars, very cool stuff
Great design and a beautiful tribute.
Although I have to admit that I would love to see your interpretation of the original flying Sausage design.🤣
Same here
In a way, it looks similar to some "uglies." Most notably, the opposite of the infamously horrible "Die Wing" (a Tie cockpit with Y wing engines attached). The reverse, a Y wing with its engines replaced by the Tie fighter's wings (and presumably some ion drives) was actually one of the better performing "uglies" as it had fairly good speed while still keeping the defensive strengths and shielding of the Y wing fuselage. Some say that it actually out-performs a base Y-wing despite the incompatibility penalty, simply because it is adding newer and more advanced drive technology to the Y wing's main body.
A Y wing with Tie fighter wings also just happens to have a similar appearance to the idea of a snub nose body with Tie-style wings. That said, the V-wing seems to inherit a portion of the "sausage style Tie" idea.
The reason EC Henry is so amazing at designing these models is because...
He's a former employee of the Incom corporation shipyards (in a galaxy far far away)
Nothing gets me more excited than new 70s Star Wars content from you!
I love every one of your designs based on Collin Cantwells work. Each one is amazing to see as you bring those old drawing and models back to life
I am a huge fan of the Stainless Steel Rat. They are some of my favorite sci fi books. To learn the one of my favorite books is directly responsible for one of my all time favorite star wars ships brings me untold joy.
Thank you!
Honestly this is amazing, and I imagine the scene in your x wing video being the first full deployment of the T.I.E fighter with the Incursor(?) Class cruiser (maybe the first large capital ship to be completed commissioned by the empire given the Imperial 1 was commissioned late in the republic era)
That said, any chance on adaptations of the Cantwell Y wing or 'millenium falcon' ( either the scrapped one that looked like Discovery 1 or the one that became the Blockade runner)?
please make your own version of the cantwell falcon. its my all time favorite design
Already teasing that
Looks like the" Eagle "
Cantwell's designs are iconic, nearly everything the man touched remains recognizable to this day.
One of the few star fighter designs that deserves the term iconic.
@EC Henry the original renders for the X Wing vs the TIE ~ Chefs Kiss sir 🥂🥂🥂
This made my day! And then the next day we get your interpretation of a 25th century Norway Class from Star Trek! I hope we get a video for that too!!! Could not have a better EC Henry week!
2:02 Man, oh man. That picture is Star Wars more than anything else I think I've ever seen.
Dangerous in swarm numbers
Now that you have assembled most of the old designs of Star Wars ships, you should definitely make a battle animation with all the old prototypes. Would be sick !!
Absolutely love it
Fun fact: the original TIE fighter - just like any other TIE variant - looks nothing like a tie.
That's a reference to the fact that its name has nothing to do with an actual tie. It just happens to be the acronym for "twin ion engines".
They do resemble bow ties though which was what inspired the name out-of-universe.
Mind, an actual ion engine would make for a poor fightercraft. _Very_ low thrust rockets, albeit very efficient in propellant and energy.
Awesome renders, as always, and artworks
Cheers
video is beautiful, again. you bring me back the REAL stars wars feeling. iam so thankful :)
The wings at the end being just slightly off is chef's kiss
Great content as always.
Yo mom new EC Henry video just dropped
This man deserves to be hired by Lucasfilm. But I don't want he to stop making content for us, the people.
That blue period explains the first Lego Star Wars TIE fighter sets.
The spikes plus the red canopy kinda makes it look like Sauron in TIE Fighter form.
Great content and visuals as usual, thank you!
This is really cool. The blue fuselage on this model reminds me of the old Lego TIE fighter models that had lots of blue parts.
Rest in piece Colin Cantwell.
I had this amazing idea that you should do: you should re-imagine the starship Enterprise, as an Imperial, Kuat Drive Yards/ Star Destroyer style cruiser, with maybe a underbelly hanger bay. I think it would look super cool.
I love the super glossy panels.
I never expected to be here this early. Your work is absolutely amazing.
I have a personal Star Wars story I'm writing with the last serious separatist world holding out with a droid army/navy against the newly formed Empire. a large amount of the story is the prolonged battle between the Imperial Clone forces and the droid army/local militia, at the end Tarkin arrives with a second wave fleet of Victory Class Star Destroyers deploying prototype TIE fighters which obliterate the remaining forces sort of a foreshadowing change into the iconography of the empire we know. However I picture the TIEs when first made used as sort of a rapid fire (machine gun like) fighter that mowed down opponents while also being speed demons but because of the cost, they diminished their fire power and easy maneuverability.
Remember how Spacedock had the opportunity to write some lore and backstories for ships that appeared in the Expanse? Yeah, I wish that was you but in Star Wars.
Can't wait to see the Original Y-Wing and Millennium Falcon Concepts brought to life by EC Henry in the future
I love the content this man can give us because he always outdone himself always coming with new and better things
Fantastic video and work as always. I'm always looking forward to your next creations
I'd love to see what other IPs EC could scrounge through. I'd love to see some designs of things from BSG for instance. Keep up the great work man, love what you do.
There's another interesting background ship to be investigated, on the cover art for a new hope depicts a ship that resembles a Y-wing, but seems to be flying with the engine pods at the front and cockpit at the back. Could be a fun project
Quality work man kinda wonder how a battleship varient of the venator would look (replace top hanger with more turbolaser batteries
why hasn't he got more subscribers he is awesome
I want to take you, EC Henry. Your video about the early TIE inspired me to run a TTRPG campaign, set in the early Empire. It revolves around providing security for TIE R&D process, whike Confederate holdouts, early Rebel groups and agents of competing shipbuilding companies try to throw wrench in the work. I have also used your Imperial Nebulon-B image for another, unrelated campaign, set in early post-Endor/Jakku period. Baddies in this campaign use ImpNeb as a flagship and might (or might not) one day become the First Order.
P.S. First campaign is set in Legends continuity, latter in the Canon.
The red bubble window is a nice touch.
Such an incredible inclusion in the Dart video 👏
I think you should do an episode on the finned sausage! I would love to see that brought to life!
The Cantwell sketch art you showed at around 0:20 makes me want to see a canon Ugly, where someone put TIE fins onto a kludged together fuselage with an ETA-2 cockpit in the front.
Well, there are reports of uglies that make use of the Y-wing body with Tie wings and engines, which happen to fit the basic overall look fairly well. It even is said to be one of the better uglies (in comparison with its exact opposite of a Tie cockpit with Y wing engines, which is so horrible its nicknamed the "Die Wing").
The fan base really needs and deserves a movies about the design and introduction of the two non human and non sentient characters of Star Wars… the Tie fighter & the X Wing. I know they would make interesting story lines!
Oh i have to Modify 3 of my X-wing game Ties... totally giving it this paint scheme and making playable cards to go with them... thanks for this upload brother!
-Shows original Millennium Falcon design at 2:25
-Refuses to elaborate further
-leaves
This is the way 😎
Always a good day when EC uploads a new video. I love your designs so much, I've included them in my head canon.
Just thought of this, any way you could make a kind of next-gen Cr series ship? You could do something like a purpose-built ship that was built to fix the unmaneuverability of the CR-110 but have more weapons and armor than the CR-90.
EC Henry do you have any plans to make the "missing link" millennium falcon, meaning the Joe Johnston drawing first shown in The Art of Solo: A Star Wars Story?
Potentially
I can see the production TIE moving from the one piece front window to the segmented one due to manufacturing cost and ease of repair reasons.
The one piece window takes damage the whole thing must be replaced but with the sectional one on that part needs to be.
They may have left it out of Solo, but hopefully they'll use that design in The Bad Batch. It would be the perfect story to use it in, and we did see those McQuarrie-esque stormtroopers last season.
Bro, your videos are great!
The design is so simple but so effective!!! The best Sci fi ship designs always are. The Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise comes strait to mind. Thank you for sharing. 🇬🇧 Bows
It was a pleasure to meet Cantwell before he passed.
Early Y-Wing mock-up when good sir? That fighter was my first love in Star Wars and I would love to see you work your magic on the original concept model for it.
Once again, some Colin Cantwell certified hood classics
Beautiful work!
Hoping to see a CRAVAT Fighter concept someday...
TIE fighters are my favorite fighter craft
this what I was looking for, the color, many thanks
Awesome vid bro
AWESOME
That's all I can think to say
You are not wrong.
I mean between Star Wars, and Star Trek there are few ships that come to mind that rival there designs.
I mean I love the ships in The Expanse. But yeah you just cannot deny how awesome a Tie Fighter looks or how glorious most... not all but most Starships in Trek look.
Wouldn't have guessed the Stainless Steel Rat connection in a million years
I like your work and i want love to see you do something mandalorian date have so much cool law
It's definitely one of the most iconic sci-fi fighter designs for sure!
Excellent as always, you are a true pop-culture archeologist. I hope that Star Wars never runs out of secrets for you to dig up!
you never miss!
TIE Fighters forever!
1:59 Like the Spitfire and Bf 109.
Inspired as always.
I have my own design for a TIE fighter and i'd love to see it used in universe as a prototype
Disney going to steal this one too?
Looks good my dude.
My first thought.
I lost how many times he said "Colin Cantwell"
Can you make a back story of the Collin cantwell millennium falcon
Huh, I wonder if the Colin Mk1 TIE fighter could fit in it's timeline as a prototype ship alongside the development of the V-Wing, or be started Right as the tech and R&D for the V-Wing as it started being mass produced. Akin to Sienar Fleet System's fighter craft division starting it's development in-house without the Republic commissioning another development program for another fighter. This can happen in the West with it's company run R&D aviation companies if they're big enough to sink collateral into testbed planes. And in the era of the Clone Wars I could see that happening. So much military procurement Credits being bandied helping companies have enough liquidity to do stuff like this more easily.
Nicely done man! Can you do the RF-2 Stingray next?
Perhaps
Love my Hot Wheels prototype Tie Fighter, falcon, star destroyer
any plans for doing the Colin Cantwell Y-Wing and the Finned Sausage at all? because your Colin Cantwell content is the best
Mmmmmmaybe
@@Angelos_K In fairness, the Y-wing body, Tie fighter wings variant of "Ugly" actually fits fairly well. As would the same, but with an X-wing body.
Nice work on the ship. Think you can post the renders for it on your Artstation? If I were to use the design, while I will overall retain the gist of the idea behind the Cantwell TIE regarding your lore, since I'm more of a Legends guy, I'll probably make it the T.I.E. Starfighter, maybe the alpha prototype to that, that was alluded to in early, viral marketing for Attack of the Clones since it technically lacked any real images to showcase it (the most we got was the TIE engine itself.
ngl I wanna see the flying sausage rendered now.
