The Auto Focus of the Future - DJI Focus Pro – A Disruptive Follow Focus System - Test & Review
DJI set out to create the Focus system of the future by combining wireless focus pulling with disruptive LiDAR and AI technology. We had access to the Focus Pro before the official announcement to take you on a deep dive… including explaining how the system works, what features it offers, how you set it up, how to rig it, and how you operate it. We tested the Focus Pro in different scenarios including a hole set of stress test that would be impossible for PDAFs and humans… and of course, we tried to fool the AI to figure out the limits.
Get some popcorn, and let’s dive into the Future of Focus!

@26:15 Beò - Not Myself
1st question: Is it possible to tap on the big wireless monitor or draw boxes on it to choose and switch objects/faces to focus on the fly while recording, or it's possible only on a tiny hand unit monitor? 2nd question: Changing faces/objects - is it possible via touchscreen tap? Or drawing boxes and switching them via wheel of the grip are the only ways?
No, the big monitor shows the image of the camera… not the Lidar image. The “Picture in Picture” on the transmission monitor is the Lidar image but does not have touch feature. According to DJI R&D that is very hard to implement. The small screen on the hand unit is touch and allows to draw boxes and choose targets. This means that you can’t choose targets in transmission control that are not recognized automatically at all.
@@MediaDivision thank you for the clarification! Lets hope then that 2nd generation of a hand grip will have a bigger screen or better - tap/draw to focus will become available on a monitor itself.
It's 4AM, I should be sleepinggg ! But this video is way too good.
Hard to feal sorry ;-) glad you enjoy and thanks for spending your night with us
Dude I swear everybody jumped on the Mamiya's and the Contax Zeiss's after you made your videos on them (which are still the best). Nobody was posting about those back then and now literally everyone in LA at rental houses or Sharegrid listings. So when I say Media Division is influential (whether it has the amount of subscribers it deserves) it's really not a joke or an exaggeration. Nicky is a weird prophet.
To be fair… there are a lot of videos about the subject before mine… I hope we did an do have the best ones. We did these because there was a general Trent towards vintage lenses and these where just the most interesting and accessible. I am very happy that these videos became “household names” in the industry.
As always… thank you so much for your support… next up: we reinterpreted Finchers “The Killer” with real anamorphic lenses.
Thank you for all your work.
Our Pleasure EposVox…. Thanks for being around… again!
Absolutely fantastic as usual. Would have loved to see the unit used with diopters(specially anamorphic ones). Btw diopters do the same thing for any lens, so theoretichaly the unit should be able to even proide a diopter_ON feature, no?
Hey Josh… thanks a lot… appreciated! Diopters will not work with the Focus pro, as you can’t calibrate lenses accordingly. Maybe you are right and you could do it as a switch feature, but then, the system is not really effective for super close ups. We made it fly with a macro, but only with a lot of purposely chosing wrong installation distances.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your generosity Josh! It is really kind of you to support our mission. The division Salutes you!
wow <3
Thanks man!
And may I add. OMG the image quality of the Alexa is simply mind blowing
I love this channel. I appreciate the huge amount of work that goes into your videos. Thank you brother.
Thats just beatiful
Thanks a lot… glad you enjoy
is it possible to stream with the s5ll as well?
not directly from the camera
Besides it having extra resolution or dr, output looks ordinary. The processs is cool informative thou..
Yep… just like IMAX
Can you power the rs4 with an Anker 737 bank and use while its charging?
I don’t even have a RS4…
Best focus pro test on youtube ! thanks a lot. it's just amazing to design a product like this and to add shitty usb c port that are the weakest port ever
Thanks. I certainly would have preferred another connector… but then you would dislike the price.
The best part about those 1.33x anamorphic lenses on APS-C is that the de-squeeze turns out to be about 2560, so it works well with LG Ultra-wide monitors.
05/14/2024 : this video is just amazing.THANK YOU
Our pleasure Johe! Glad you enjoy so many years later
Actually i dont like 28 even tho i use 50. Yes 50-28 is a pair. I prefer 35 bcs its flexibility. 28mm below difficult to be portrait oriented
Normally i am 18-35-50-100 dude but difficult to find 18mm lens except zeiss. So i choose 20mm. But viltrox release great 16mm i think ill try that one
You use whatever suits your taste a d task
Unironically the insane focus breathing makes the shot feel more dramatic, this is some insane tech
Great Video As always . The one thing I would be interested to know if automated Hitchcock Dolly zoom camera movements will be possible in future updates especially for e.g. non parafocal EF lenses even with a experienced focuspuller those are though shoots to realize . There are a lot of great Focus only systems already available that's is one of the features I would love a FIZ capable system to do . Grüße In die Hansestadt.
Thanks. Well, this system is perfect for a dolly zoom but requires a parfocal zoom (EF or whatever). These days parfocal zooms are quite common and affordable. If you do a speciality shot like a dolly zoom, you can always rent, just like you would a dolly in this case. For dolly zooms to look cool you will need quite a long dolly (3 meters plus) and a correspondingly wide zoom range.
@@MediaDivision In the narrative context the Exact frameing to me is more important than exact focus , an incorrect zoom rate will ruin the illusion in this instance. As far as I Know there is no easy one fits all Automated Solution that what both keep both focus and perspective . As you suggested it would definitely worth the rent zoom Lenses and Equipment fitting the project. I asked about the parafocal lenses out of Curiosity about the limits of the system and the mentioned Expanding Lens database in Future Firmware Versions to come . For Highspeed movements in confined spaces A Creative lightweight Rig Might be required like for example R5C and the and the16-35mm or similar would be a choice. And many full Metal Barrels Cine zooms could exceed the capacity of some medium sized gimbals . Thanks Again For takeing the time out of you day to answering my Nerdy Questions . Can´t wait for the next Video.
@@floskoss6788 watch out zoom episode to get a good feel for dolly zooms... gimbals are not great in that context. Don't overthink it... just try. Plenty parfocal zooms out there.
@@MediaDivision Good Recommendation I already watched the DZO zoom Video at its release as well as the Iron sea and companion videos. The particular shoot I am thinking of , is a car shoot with both the subject and the camera in movement at different speeds . From wideangle to super wideangle . I Will do some testing with the equipment I have to consider what to rent .👍
How can I like this video more than once?🤔
Commentint is a very good alternative… Thanks a lot Jesus!
Man I love the fact that for some section of the video, the right channel just has the raw sounds from the factory playing. It was distracting for the 1st thirty seconds but I can't emphasize how nice and calming it becomes soon after. Even when the noise was loud and chaotic, somehow the rawness of it was soothing to me Idk if this is an artistic choice or just a mistake but I genuinely love this mixture or surreal music alongside actual real sounds while filming.
It was supposed to be stereo… but in a production like this… shit will happen… and that is not the only turd in this one. Thanks for the feedback man
@@MediaDivision don't worry, it works well with the video
The lenses look great, just wish I could afford one.
A problem as old as time
Do you guys think we could power up the dji grip with the smallrig 3252 item ? I have a zhiyun gimbal and would like to use dji focus pro on it. Thanks for your help
Yes, it works. You have to remove the Nato rail and the grip shows 0% charge, but it still works
@@MediaDivisionthank you so much !
I appreciate all of the info! where can I find the t bracket to mount the high-bright monitor to the focus pro hand unit?
Our pleasure… sorry, but I don't have information on that. Can't see it in the DJI store myself.
"O" or "A" version? Which one is better, what's de difference? Great video! You're amazing!
Thanks … I don't follow? "O" or "A" version? . Aspherical or non Aspherical? There is a direct comparison in here and in the main episode
@@MediaDivision One version has a "O" in the aperture ring, other version has an "A" I think the "A" version is newer but is there any difference optically?
@@sladjj not to my knowledge

This was a great and informative video.
Thanks Seth… appreciated!
Thanks for the video! Sorry for stupid question, if I pair it with 58mm on the full frame will I get strong vignetting?
Absolutely… depending on the specifics of the lens you try 80mm and longer
Always super in-depth and well made :)
Thanks Tom… always trying to make something worth your time
I like eva but, for the same reason I won't buy a Red camera I won't buy eva..expensive media..Red proprietary media and eva P2 cards..WHY??..if I can't use a sd or ssd I will not buy it..(eva sd proxy only)..I'll continue to use bgh1 and bmpcc4k..
This is a 6 year old camera system that (unlike Varicam that uses P2) uses simple SD cards that cost next to nothing… just like BGH1
thankyou for making such in-depth quality videos!
Thnaks a lot man. Always trying to improve and create something tat is worth your time

Oh… thanks a lot Gregory… very much appreciated!! A toast on you and a we salute you of course!!! Thank you for your kindness and for helping the mission.

Great demo guys, I can feel all the love you've put into the making ! Congrats. Sorry If that question has been raised already, but as a LF mark2 owner, I would love to have a tiny description of how you gear up the Mavo with the DJI focus. Thanks and keep bouncing ;p
Thanks a lot… well, just like you would with any cam. The Hand grip can be attached to the Nato rail of the Movecam cage on the right side… although, it doesn't fit (Seems like my Movecam rail is slightly to thin. I put a gaff tape on it and it fits. The rest ist the same with all other cams. Our specific LiDAR mount solution is described in detail in this video and the Movecam top handle attachement works perfect for that
BTW… the top handle rail you see on the Alexa in this video IS the Movecam rail included in the Kinefinity Edge/LF MK2 set.
@@MediaDivision I was indeed referring in particular to the handlegrip. Thanks

Apprécié ! Merci d'avoir accroché !
Thanks, amazing video ! The haze issue is non-starter for me. Even light haze will jeopardize the lidar?
Thanks… well, we didn’t make an extensive test, but expect it to be already unreliable with what you might consider light haze.
Ok, many thanks for your swift response.
Nothing short of greatness, as usual. What a wonderful journey. I think you should reach out Blazar for their Remus 1.5x, Cato 2x, and their Nero 1.5x adapter if they wanna partner with you in an episode to test their gear. They'll benefit way more than all the causal filmmakers on youtube. Also reach out to Mofage and Meike for their PL/EF adapters to mirrorless which you can use rear VND/ND/CPL filters and more. I think MANY would need that video as they are more accessible price wise compared to other high end cine glass offered from premium brands, which could lead to higher view and engagement count as those Blazar lenses seem to be on the hype wagon at the moment for a good reason.
I’ve used Canon FD 50mm F1.4 SSC and absolutely loved it. It’s compact, sharp, and produces stunning images. So if you can’t afford F1.2 version I can highly recommend 1.4 and you can pick it up for around 100$
Totally… you can even use the nFD version for half the price
As a engineer and an aspiring photographer, that was a treat. Loved the story/background, detail given with regards to the rehousing work, the improvements possible during the work, and the peek behind the production as well. A really great piece. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Andre… appreciate your kindness. Always trying to put something out that is worth your time
Blackmagic ursa cine 17k has entered the chat.
with a sensor that is about 1/8 the size of the one emulated in this experiment you can tell where the problem will be… the sensels are pretty small meaning early diffraction due to the nyquest limit. But sure… give me one
EXCELLENT review!!! Great thanks.
Thanks a lot… you are very welcome
I remember seeing this before, but enjoyed it again as if I had not seen it. Timeless gem, like all your work.
Thanks Bo… always aiming to create evergreens
really good video!
Thanks a lot Alexej
Not sure how did I miss this one. Should watch the rest! I'm planning to shoot the first, probably the only, film at an extremely lower budget. Had my eyes on the Blazar Remus 1.5x anamorphic lenses, but should use the regular Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 for under the sea shots at moderate depths with underwater housing. If I ever film it and post it on youtube, I would share the link with you if you're interested! Keep bringing these majestic documentaries!
Go for it and share for sure… good luck with the underwater shots!
@@MediaDivision Your underwater short film is a great inspiration as well! Hope to see more from you because you are more than capable.
love the channel, cant wait for the next episode
Thanks man!
Wow... This is amazing, a lot of "samples" compared to others who just talk talk talk, his face, his face, his face, then some examples. I have a question though, how did you set the focus that you can come from afar (the big car was already in focus) and closer to the miniature (and also in focus)?
Thanks … we invest vastly more time and effort compared to others. Always trying to produce something worth your time. When you change the distance between camera and the object you have to pull focus of course.
How do you calibrate for such close distances? When manually calibrating a lens, you have to focus at 1m and then at 4m. My Sigma Cine Primes, for example, go completely crazy when getting closer than the 1m. It seems as they switch to their minimum focus distance as soon as the Lidar hits 0.9m or below. And there is no way to set additional calibration points for closer distances.
Calibrate correctly… set flange wrongly… play a bit
@@MediaDivision I have already sent a video to the DJI support to show how I am calibrating. So there seems to be no error on my side. Distance from Lidar to sensor is also set correctly. And you cannot tweak the flange distance on manually added lenses - only on the lenses that already have a DJI profile on the app. I am really surprised about your results with such close focus distances.
@@florianschmid4109 sorry, I didn't mean flange (and you can set flange manually with the transmission control setup), I mean installation distance… set it wrong to a point where close focus looks correct. You will absolutely get problems on the infinity side, but that is obviously not the point here.
