A new Probe - Exploring and testing the LAOWA Pro2be lenses with cinematic experiments

- Laowa puts the "Pro" in Probe, with a set of three 24mm Probe lenses. T8 speed, a longer reach, a shorter working distance, and an overall improved image quality, make the Pro2be a desirable tool for macro photography, SFX, and tabletop work.
A team from The Marmalade and the Media Division will conduct a test with a series of cinematic experiments that expose the possibilities and the quality of these lenses - as well as giving you some interesting background information and education in filmmaking - just to stir your creative juices and to make this as fun as as possible. We are going to create a mini to macro shot, explore a technique called “dry for wet” for a mysterious underwater shot, and wild fluid dynamics in a tank.
What do the Laowa Pro2be lenses bring to the table and how much does it mitigate the original Probes achilles heel… that is, the hunger for light.

I am right there with you… most of the time. Our Pleasure!!
Legend is back :D
We never left… these things take time.
@@MediaDivision I know, I have some small channel on CZcams, I realize how much time this take to make a good video 🥹
In an era of "agony of choice" it's hilarious how easy a choice it was to watch this video. Kicked back, had breakfast and put this on -- all the while having absolutely zero indecision about doing so, because that's how much I look forward to these. Once they're up, that's what I'm watching. This was amazing!! It's so weird seeing my channel name at the end but I love it. As usual, this is superb. Only missed opportunity was for Dr. Strangelove during "FLUIDS" XD And that's really saying something when the ONLY chance missed was for a Jack D. Ripper meme. I LOVE THAT LAOWA FINALLY GOT YOUR TREATMENT. For my money, they're today's equivalent of what Nikon or Kinoptik were up to in the old days. And I especially love how you didn't go easy on them, either! You're the only guy that would use this to educate Laowa's customers and us about the history of probe glass, and even flag where the OG's were better. Most people watching this I bet have no idea. I know that I didn't. Danke schoen for that & for keeping it up at this level. Oh, and this is also the best mini-doc on submarine miniature work in film I think I've ever seen. PS: Wolfgang would have been VERY proud, haze notwithstanding. :) Cheers from LA - Soren
Thanks a lot for your kindness and your support Soren… very much appreciated!! The team and I salute you - it is people like you that we do this for.
Companies like LAOWA and DZO are pushing the envelope by being more flexible and experimental than the classic European and Japanese brands. After a 50+ years in the business, companies tend to freeze up a bit. I aplaude them for the fresh wind the bring. I think we where very positive about the Pro2be and I really think they are a great product. The Marmalade uses them on a high profile job today. Referring to the Optex Probe is unfair for sure as it is a lens that gos vor over 100.000K these days, it is just a different approach to the same problems… a very expensive approach.
We are already working on the next 3, maybe even 4 episodes. The rest of the year will be packed ;-)
Thanks again for everything!!
I'm so happy CZcams actually gave me the notification for this. One of the only long form videos that I watch at normal speed and never skip ahead. Absolutely stunning as always! Can't believe I never heard of dry for wet, but now I want an excuse to film one. Shots looked unbelievable regardless of the artifacts
Glad you got that notification and we can get you excited… I wish there where more like you around.
Totally go for it… I think we absolutely overdid this one ;-) you can do dry for wet in your garage, if your hazer is strong enough
Best review channel over CZcams
Thanks man… now CZcams has to realise that, too ;-)
A joy to watch and a welcome surprise for so much coverage of Das Boot
Thanks… yeah… I am a bit obsessed with that movie
@MediaDivision I have a friend back in Germany who has seen it dozens of times and has dragged me along a few times. He's obviously obsessed too. It deserves the attention!
Literally the most professional channel on CZcams. Thanks Media Division, you're an inspiration.
We are trying to be … glad you think we succeed. Thank for your kindness and for watching BigPanda
T stops are only measured at the center of the frame, so they could be much darker due to fall off.
Love that you incorporate some of the new compabilities when paired with motion control. It will be a lot of fun to craft new shot ideas inside a studio for commercial work etc. I suspect that's the fun part of filmmaking.
Yes, but the Sigma appears much brighter in the center, too… much brighter. We didn't measure that though… just what you see here and in the scopes.
Totally… always cool to have something new that inspires ideas!
It was great to have a comparison with the V1. As usual thanks for the amazing quality of your episodes !
I hoped that people would find that interesting… thanks for kindness Adrien
The quality of these videos merits many more views.
I will agree, but this is admittedly a very niche product.... anyways: spread the word! Thanks a lot!
Yes… we’ve been waiting
Working on multiple ones… always. More to come soonish. Been working for 10 days more or less around the clock to get this online (you know the drill). Now let me lay back for 12 hours ;-)
@@MediaDivision I know the feel man. Time to relax. 😉
Great to see you back, you give a whole new meaning to CLASS , and give the wife palpations when I tell her the price of all 3😂😂😂
Tell your wife I am sorry … I say that a lot ;-) Glad you Enjoy Ian!
Guys the content you make is not just amazing, its exactly the time of things i want to see and its presented it the best way possible.
Very happy to hear that Josh. I just wish there where a few more like you as you are exactly the kind of guy we do this for. Thank you for your kindness
I am always so happy to see a new Media Division video!
Very happy to have made your day!!!! Thanks for being around!
13:55 : you did not even blink your eye! ahah I would have been scared!
oh I see, it's in reverse 🤣
Exactly… it's the simple ones that get you
Every time I cannot believe that these videos are free on CZcams. The production quality is just unmatched. Superb.
Cheers Ben… I wish more people would see and appreciate it :-( we are few to do a lot for fewer
Thank you very much for bringing the functions and characteristics of the probe lens into full play! Let everyone get inspired by photography, applause for you!
Thanks a lot… doing what we can to make a lens test appealing.
These reviews are the best! Went to see this imideatly!
Thanks man… I wish CZcams would feel the same.
It's always a good day when Media Division release a new film. Cheers.
Glad you see it that way … our pleasure… always!
As always you manage to capture your audience with beautiful shots and some epic content.
What makes your channel stand out is the ability to get everybody thrilled and excited about this subject. Great work!
There is enough sh... on the platform. Let's do it differently. Glad we where able to get you thrilled… that's the best we can hope for. Thank you for watching and your kindness.
I love your channel. No matter the evolution of AI imagery there will always be demand for the skills and gear you people experiment with. Real image capture is the future not the past.
Thanks man… well, I hope you are right … for the sake of our children, culture, and the human race.
@@MediaDivision I am a visual artist (many different paint media) and recently spent a few years learning digital painting. I also followed development of Deep Dream and experimented with it. Then I saw MidJourney and IMAGEN and other AI visual art tools and realized the corpus of visual art and photography has been mined without permission to train these regression correlation algorithms on steroids. I was stunned at the exponential increase in quality too and know will only get even better. I felt so deflated that these skills I had just built were effectively useless (still like to do it though for the process) My art for some time has referenced the idea of how the ‘oculus’ of a person so familiar with screen imagery may come to see nature and I incorporate artifacts of compression algorithms and other artifacts from the process of capture and encoding, compression, transmission and projection in paintings of trees. Anyway I feel there will be a growing need for the authentic; objects and images that bear evidence of being crafted by a human brain and hand, with imperfection celebrated. It’s base and the economics of it may not turn out as many predict. Related: When my 19 year old son recently quit “business studies” at University to apprentice as a plumber I realized he has a gut feeling it will be some time before robots and AI systems will be going into houses to install and fix pipes, but not so long before information driven jobs are “optimized” out of the workforce by AIs.
Best youtube cinematography channel by a huge margin. Always a pleasure to watch a new video!
Thank you Mr. really appreciate that you see us that way! Glad you enjoy!
I could watch your videos all day!
I am all for it ;-) Appreciate your kindness and being around Andy.
This channel never disappoints. Thank you
Thanks man... tying hard not to ;-)
Very interesting! Love your work
Very gald you think and feel that way man… what more can we ask for.
So happy to see you again!
So happy to see YOU again ;-)
About the smoke/haze machine ; try to not use that blue one, it's one of the most common but it really sucks. The fluid used is indeed very greasy and start to accumulate everywhere
(including in your lungs) and it stinks.
Try using stage grade smoke machine like an MDG, which used pressurise Co2 or Nitrogen, with a special fluid that doesn't have any smell, and is completely dry and leaves no residue.
The studio uses this haze fluid it all the time in large amounts… it isn't a problem and it doesn't leave residue. Still, it is different when it is this thick… I mean, visibility of maybe 30 cm?! Thanks for your input
Not to leave a comment on this is a Sin. Thank you for all the absurd but truly Wonderfull work you all put on this video, and all the others in the past. Incredible how you are so used to make this quality videos that the only way is up, and up to the ceiling. Is like keeping the hard work makes you more humble. And for that reason a I find your videos to be inspiring. Probe lenses are the future of cinematography, but they are so tricky and expensive to fully and seriously incorporate. Probe adapters made shots inside planes in Nolan's Dunkirk posible with IMAX, and there is a long list if one read The American Cinematographer back issues. Underwater miniature takes are things that catch my attention from when I was little, but only now I'm understanding how they really where made. For that I found all your examples to be on perfect key. 🙏
Very happy you feel edutained and that you appreciate our way of approaching and executing our projects. It is a pleasure to do it for those who understand and are passionate about it. Thank you so much for being around and for your kindness.
@@MediaDivision and thanks to you too, for your infinite attention 🙏
I wish man… just trying!@@agustinsaavedra2752
This is fantastic 💯
Cheers man
What an incredible and thorough breakdown. Thank you as always!
Thanks for watching… very happy you enjoy and comment!
Great team effort, as always! You guys are a reference in cinematography content on YT.
One thing you didn't mention was the immense effort in editing and putting everything together for a short YT Video, on top of everything you mention before! Very well done!
Now I wave to buy Das Boot...
Thanks man… glad you see us this way… unfortunately CZcams doesn't seem to get that.
Absolutely, but I don't have to thank myself. I did all research, writing, editing, grading, FX, VoiceOver… took me about two weeks of looong days/nights.
Go for it, it is totally worth watching, even 40 years later.
Incredible production value once again!
Thanks man… always trying ;-)
First! I really enjoy this! Thanks! How it was done videos are so great, even if I never get to try them myself! I have the original Laowa tube lens for Canon EF but I don't have a Spike! ;0)))
I will never own a Spike either, but this is totally about the inspiration… you can do many things almost as good with little things like sliders. I just hope you get some inspiration here. There are plenty of things in the beginning that I did with the old probe and only a slider
I love that you brought up the nyquist theorem. Amazing breakdown of use case scenario as well. I absolutely love catching your content. Well done once again! ❤
Thanks man… I would love to do a small episode in which I could explain Resolution and Nyquist relation in detail… but I fear that no one would watch it ;-) Very happy you enjoy
@@MediaDivision you might be surprised... whenever I taught it - I got complete attention and a million questions that appropriately reflected the material learned. Also, doing an episode on spot metering a scene for lighting using a range of different tools - like the exposure tools in camera, separate meters (Sekonics and such), spot metering with 18% grey cards as well as color metering - or even using a contrast glass to see hot spots (I still have - and use - Nestor Almendros' contrast glass he used when he shot "Cockfighter"!!!) - I think that would be an awesome Media Division piece.
Hmm… thanks for the input but that seems very nerdy even for us and not so interesting on a visual level. We try to entertain as much as we like to educate… we introduce physical concepts if we need it to serve a bigger story, but just like that?!? Why don't you do it? I would watch it.@@dravani
Every time there's a major release from you guys, I go, "YES CHRISTMAS!"
Thank god we don't release every week… then we would be degraded to YES SUNDAY ;-)
That "coming out of the car with your gun drawn" shot is amazing and I really want to see it used in some badass crime drama now. Damn.
I am all for it… call Scorsese!!! Thanks man, appreciate you hanging around!
@@MediaDivision Haha, no problem. I was actually more reminded of Tarantino and the dramatic zooms in Django Unchained but Scorsese works well too ;)
Works for me, too. Quick… call Tarantino 😂@@fandyus4125
Incredibly well done test. I thought I would sit and click around and jump through your video but I found myself watching all 30 minutes and didn't even realize it had been that long. Learned a lot about the new Probe lens set, that I wasn't seeing anywhere else online. I personally own the older Probe and use it quite often in projects, so it's tempting to upgrade, especially after seeing this.
Thanks man… we strive to make these reviews into something educational that goes beyond charts and functionality… something worth your time. In best case scenarios, we can inspire ideas. Glad this was helpful and convincing.
Every time I watch your channel I am astonished that you don't have millions of subscribers, because I would subscribe to this channel like 10 times
Please… do ;-) I guess there are really not 10 Million people on the platform that are interested in the higher end stuff and the education.
What a brilliant demonstration of the new probe lenses. An absolute delight to watch😊
Thanks man… glad you apprciate!
your videos keeps getting better with the duration 👌
thanks man… always trying to improve or bring a new gist to the show. Glad you feel edutained!
Incredible cinematography ❤ This is the highest production quality of a lens review I've ever seen 🤯
Thanks a lot man! Check out all our other ones… we love to compete with ourselves ;-)
Bro this is literally a big budget documentary, Laowa made a good decision!
Thanks man… always trying to do something that is worth your time… there is enough mediocre content out there.
So so good! A real delight to watch.
Thank you so much, very happy you enjoy!
As a hobbyist macro cinematographer, I got stupid gitty seeing all those lights. The power!

Amazing work as usual.
I own the original, and for sure won't be able to afford this set... But it's ok 😀
Totally… these are few tasks and budgets that would "require" an update
i came for a lens review. I got awesome demos. What an amazing video!
Thanks a lot Buster… always trying to be entertaining beyond the usual ;-)
This episode was absolutely crazy, you're such an inspiration to so many of us! If you don't have 3 million Subs is just because there's not enough of us to make it happen, or maybe because there's not enough of us that know about your existence! You're marvelous and an amazing source of inspiration of all we can achieve...hugs from Canada and the world.
Thank a lot man.. that is very nice to hear. Catering to the more advanced filmmaker lot might have the negative side effect that there are just to few of us... and that those who get in the realm just stop watching YT. A sad story. We will always try to evolve and get better... together with you. Again, thanks for your kindness and... spread the word ;-)

A much as i always enjoy the content, I say it again, Media Division intro is just perfect.
You guys are on another level with the quality of videos.
Thanks a lot… I still love it too, Not sure if it will become a classic or if it will has to go some day
Good to see you having so much fun and experimenting in such large scales. I guess in the profession, we all are after this, and only a few of us can achieve an opportunity for it. Hell, you have built your own playground to have fun, and you are sharing it with others in a quality that is unique and unmatched on youtube. What a legend. Wish I had this amount of energy and humbleness.
The video is great as always. Enjoyed every second of it, despite of being bored from probe lenses (at least its overusage in uncreative ways). Das Boot is one of my alltime favourites ever, so thumbs up for that, too. Hungry for the next epic episodes.❤
Totally… so happy that the marmalade took 4 days to play with us and providing such an excellent crew - we are truly blessed. Opportunities come with passion, persistence, and constant improvement… and a bit of luck. I am sure you could do it, if you strive for it, and I am glad you can get something out of our sessions… professionally and for pure entertainment.
Das Boot is so good… I always wanted to pay homage. Glad to finally got the chance to do something.

Well this test is about as good as it gets ! thanks... and the F35 is pretty much a classic of great work.
Thanks man… for your kindness and for watching. You mean the "FD vs. K35" I guess… yes, it seems to be popular even over years and I am proud to have done that one pretty much alone
Well, thanks for the video, guys! You consistently pump out some of the highest production value content there is on CZcams. Cheers.

Fantastic video, truly fascinating. Many thanks for making this.
Totally our pleasure Lawrence! Thanks for watching
This is the highest quality someone can get about filmmaking on CZcams. You never disappoint. Hope one day I can get close.
Is it? Challenge accepted!!! ;-) Thanks a lot man… I am sure you can. I'm not even doing this for long an I don't believe there is such a thing like talent.
@@MediaDivision You need all, talent, knowledge, and gear to achieve your vision! I sincerely feel that your content is a blessing for youtube. It's something you can expect from like Netflix documentaries. Always eagerly waiting for your wonderful made videos with your pristine commentary.
Keep doing your wonderful work! And maybe try to reach out to some as you're Hollywood worthy. Maybe with assistant from others, we might see your own "semi-low-budget" but high quality film.
talent simply means to be interested and invested in something, so you get better over time. And when you got good, people call it talent as if that was something that somebody was just given. Everybody could get there given that he/she has the passion. Is you are smarter, you need less effort. Knockledge and gear comes automatically with progress. I am just saying this to tell you that you can do it… and you can get much better than me, too I am sure. Thanks for hanging@@Bo_Hazem We will try to go down that road further and further just to find out where it might lead. I hope there will be larger things down that road.
@MediaDivision More than sure you'll impress, as your quality is worth 10M subs, at least. I, myself, am wildlife filmmaker, intermediate at best. I recently made a 20min documentary titled "Dhofari Biting Midge (Airnout): Foe and Friend" on youtube on my tiny production company (me and my wife) called iGRA Productions.
Learning anything about this art will help me make more interesting documentaries in the future, hopefully. Honoured to have this lovely conversation, and I'll eagerly waiting for your next masterpiece.👏
Just watched it a bit (don't have 20 minutes right now) @@Bo_Hazem not bad at all. If you are interested in feedback, let me know… CZcams is a tough medium to compete in

The color shift from the original version of the lens is something insane🤯
The question is… which lens shifts in which direction?! ;-) As the Sigma is even colder… I guess it is the original probe that drifts to warm. Nothing you can't fix with color temp in camera or in post. Thnks for your support Alessandro!
At 7:55, between T8 and T14, there is 1 2/3 EV difference, which means a light requirement less than half, it is actually 3,2 times less.
Yes… a bit of a brainfart on my side. To be fair, practically it does not really go that way.
I see you occasionally in the Arri owner operator group. Frankly it’s a crime that you only have 150k subscribers.
I tend to agree, but we filmmakers are a small crowd. Especially those who aspire to a li more advanced things. Not the Arri crowd on CZcams ;-) Just trying to be the best in our small small niche

Thanks. Go ahead… if you have the client for that it's always nice to have. I recommend "The Marmalade"
Perfect.
We can do better …………… ;-) we will try. Thanks man!
Nicholas, you need to sell bottles of wine to go with these episodes. They are a treat...
Good idea… I actually own a wine store ;-) no shit
Honestly I m not persuaded with that new lens.
I shoot a lot on probes + motion control, the laowa og v1 for me is still the best option.
Shorter ( less vibrations ), smaller ( you get closer from the subject ), you need to go to 22 to have good results but everyone knows that macro under t14 is pretty much unusuable, so t8…
I still don’t understand that « periscope » design….. such a shame they have not made a refined periprobe design.
35deg is pretty much useless in motion control.
I keep my v1 and v2 laowas probe lenses.
High quality content as always, keep pushing it man!
If the original works for you, why change the winning team?!
"everyone knows that macro under t14 is pretty much unusable"… that is a stretch. As always, it depends and the Pro2be have better IQ at T14 than the old probe at T14... for us, that alone would be reason enough, and, you are not in the macro realm all the time.
Thanks for your input… always trying
If you can get higher image quality and the other improvements on the new lens, for a first time purchaser or deciding which to rent, it may make sense to go with the new lenses - especially if you want the built in periscope options.
I've heard of probe lenses, but haven't seen them in use. Thanks for this awesome "movie" about them. You folks did a wonderful job again!!
Say... is The Marmalade using a Gardena dirty water pump to evacuate the tanks? That's the first time seeing one that is not in an outdoor setting. 😁 Regards!
Thanks man.
I don't know, but it could very well be… and why not. Most of the time we don't think about what are things designed for, but what they can do.... and there goes another movie quote ;-)
@@MediaDivision That's a great quote & it is a concept that works well in farming, too. It's also a way of life, just like film making. Regards!

Pro two be, just rolls of the tongue.
Yes… I guess that’s why they came up with it
Unfortunately, the youtube compression hurt the awesome looking submarine shot. Any chance you could make that sequence available for download somewhere?
I know. I am afraid people would take it for their own stuff then.
Awesome video, btw what's the model name of the Arri camera that you were using? I am seeing it the first time, just curious.
Thanks, That is an old Alexa XT-M like it was used in Mad Mad Fury road and many other movies before the Alexa mini came out. Same sensor but the M has much higher frame rates in RAW. It requires to be tethered to a full size Alexa XT body.
@@MediaDivision Thank you got it.

Thanks for the outstanding review! If I will get one of these 3 lenses, what is the most usable lens for most shots? "Commercial and products videography"
Always … thanks for watching. If I would buy just one of the Pro2bes it has got to be the straight one - it is just the one that you would use most of the time.
