    amazing test !! i had the original one and sold when they announced it last year ... My main concern with this new one is regarding motor strength , they told it's improved but not sure by how much. The ability to start/stop is huge for sure, might grab because of that alone

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Torque is 4x stronger according to some testers, but I didn't have a Dtap to USB-C cable so my torque is probably restricted by voltage. It doesn't look like the motor does a PD charging handshake with my firmware. Anyways. Even with the old Nano torque was sufficient with all lenses but one… and that is a real bitch

  • @ChristianLeibig
    @ChristianLeibig Před 9 měsíci +1

    12:10 My unit arrived yesterday. I found, that the Nucleus-N II motor has a lot more strength than the old Nucleus-N. My old model kept going into "Motor Protection Mode" when used as a zoom motor with heavier glass / extending barrels. Yes, even with the super sketchy "D-Tap to Micro-USB cable" that delivers 14+ Volts over the tiny connector.
    The new Nucleus N-II motor so far handles everything confidently. First tests on a shoot yesterday had it working at 5V same or a bit better than the old Nucleus-N at 14V. When powered with around 8V I had zero issues with the motor not being able to handle lenses, whereas the old Nucleus-N kept driving me mad...
    Full recommendation from my side. :)

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks. How would it "auto focus" without being aware of subject distance? You would need a Lidar system like the DJI for that, but for vlogging internal PDAF and servo lenses work just fine. A motorised focus is good to pull focus in a narrative context - like when an Auto Focus is not aware what should be in focus at what time, how fast transitions should be, and of course, when your lens has no servos. It uses 0.8 Module gearing… like everything I ever used.

  • @SomewhatAbnormal
    @SomewhatAbnormal Před 9 měsíci

    Tilta is doing a great job of making professional tools for independent filmmakers at a reasonable price - and this just another example.
    I already have the Nucleus Nano, but there are many benefits to upgrading. With this unit, I can more easily pull focus on my run and gun Panasonic BS1H rig by having visual feedback. For when I’m using a focus puller (an actual person), the visual feedback will allow them to more easily nail distance changes while I’m moving with my gimbal rig. Also setting A/B points looks super easy.
    I will make sure to use the affiliate link when I finally save enough money to purchase.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci +1

      If the Panasonic support with camera setting comes in, you are right - NANO II might be a must have for the BS1H just for that. The lack of any display is killing me on that one. Big mistake to not even have a settings display.
      Thanks for considering our Link!

    • @SomewhatAbnormal
      @SomewhatAbnormal Před 9 měsíci

      @@MediaDivision I agree about the BS1H - just a small LED for the menu would have been great. However, since I pretty much shoot in one of two modes (30fps 4K or 24fps RAW) switching between the two modes is simple and something I’ve become accustomed to. I keep the shutter set at 180 degrees, the WB at 5500K, and I always shoot vLog. I feel like the camera was built for just such a scenario where the settings don’t change frequently?
      My biggest challenge is focus and iris control on the fly which would be much easier with the new Nucleus Nano.

    Only just started watching the video, but I want to ask which lavalier mic setup are you using here? And is the room sound treated or are you using software to clean up the voice? I am having quite a lot of echo with my DJI wireless mic in the room in which I film. Even using the revrerd reduction thing in Premiere Pro it doesn't help that much without causing weird clipping artifacts.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci +4

      This is a DJI wireless mic with a shitty lav. My Sennheiser don't fit the DJI as they are screw in. The studio has a massive echo so it is treated with Adobe Podcast AI and that is remixed with the original and than treated with EQ and Compressor in Resole… not good but better than the untreated audio. Hope that helps.

    Great Review, thanks.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci +2

      I see… well most motorised sliders have a built in feature that makes it much simpler to program and make complex focus possible to start with. Just two points without perfect timing just doesn't cut it for most shots - especially when you go from close to far, you would certainly loose focus in most of the take. With our Pro2be submarine shots in our last test episode on the robot we had like 20 focus points… all in perfect timing with the movement . So, I think such a feature wouldn't really be helpful… but be vocal about it, I don't think it would be complex to implement.

I'm always looking for ways to slim down my rig, and if i can run the motor off of a side handle instead of a v-mount, that would be ideal (for shorter projects; v-mount batteries are pretty much mandatory on long projects like weddings, etc.)...

    Great video, thank you, but everyone fails to mention the Nano II's achilles heel, is it only has 2 controlling channels, meaning if you want to use is as a fiz or in conjunction with the mirrage vnd motorized filter, you have to use an additional mirrage contoller, or the cluncky optional wheel handle to get 3 and 4 channels, which makes it good but not great. You can I believe use the tilta rs2 handle to contol an extra channel, I am trying that next. But I was hoping it would make the float camera contol easier. I dont see why they only have 2x channels when three would be a min amount I would think. Or add to the touch system to switch the wheel to what ever you want to use the wheel for, that rocker is a bit lame . Anyway thanks for showing your work and how too. @@MediaDivision A little tricky to explain. I make wildlife documentaries and we often use Nucleus M systems in remote applications where human presence could disturb our subjects. Calibrating the Nucleus M to stills lenses is not very straight forward in the field (challenging conditions, or sometimes the camera needs to be underslung and upside down to get as close to the ground as possible). Using the auto calibration feature on a lens without hard stops requires grabbing the focus ring at precisely the right time to “simulate” a hard stop at infinity for the focus motor. Using the manual calibration method recommended by Tilta often results in less than adequate torque from the motor. If, during the calibration, there is even a slight difference between the calibrated hard stops on the Nucleus M and the close and infinity focus points on the lens, then focus would drift (due to the lens not having real hard stops) over time and we would eventually lose either close or infinity focus. Re-calibration is not always possible due to the aforementioned sensitivity of the area that the remote camera is placed in. You might question why we’re using stills lenses too - there are several reasons: Cine lenses can be too heavy for the remote head we intend to use, not weather sealed for harsh outdoor environments, or too expensive to rent for a typically long natural history shoot. Additionally the electronic aperture control lets us control exposure without adding extra weight of an additional iris motor to the remote head. I’ll save my nostalgia for stills lenses with hard stops for another forum… I asked my original question because in such circumstances where there has been a mistake in calibration, it would be very useful to flip a switch, remove the hard stops on the focus control and regain the close and infinity focus of the lens. Since we mostly focus by eye via a monitor with focus tools applied, this could be a significant improvement over previous nucleus models. Apologies for the long reply but, with the exception of of the Canon CN-20 and perhaps the Pro2be, none of this gear is made with us wildlife folks in mind so we often are forced to use it in ways that seem strange to you fancy cinema folks.

    • @OnIcePerspectives
      @OnIcePerspectives Před 8 měsíci

      Typically the ‘DF’ mode (without hard stops) is for controlling the DJI R focus motor, which is typically used with the gimbal knobs which do not have hard stops. I believe the hand unit will be able to natively control the DJI gimbals in the future, which is why that mode is there. It most likely wont control the Tilta motor in that mode. No tilta motor I’ve seen can infinitely rotate lenses; it always has to have some positional value of 0

    Excellent overview! Such an enticing product, though I'm still satisfied with my fully mechanical follow focus. It's a funny story actually... When I was starting my video career I did some "research" into what I should buy to be a professional. I ended up buying the Manfrotto MVA511FF follow focus unit for 600 (!!!) €. This was ten years ago, mind you, but it's still an absolutely insane price for such a simple device. I think the current 50€ FF units beat this Manfrotto piece of plastic in quality, nevermind the Tilta NN II. But back when I bought it these kinds of things were not available.
    I still have the Manfrotto unit and use it with my Pocket 4K so I guess the "annual cost" of it hasn't been impossibly bad :D.

      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks man… like I say, I really like mech follow focus, but on a cine lens it just doesn't cut it… my vintage sets have focus throughs all over the place and it is super hard to develop muscle memory without consistent mapping. Motorised focus will do that for you. 600€ for a mechanic FF is really obnoxious these days… lots of good options from the usual suspects, but, I know what you mean… I had several expensive solutions back in the day.

    • @KaarloMedia
      @KaarloMedia Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@MediaDivision Very good point about the muscle memory. Like you said in the review, it would be fantastic to get a list of lenses saved into the TNN2 for a fully consistent throw across a set of stills/vintage lenses. I mean, you can get consistency now, which is brilliant, but a saved list would prevent constant calibration on lens swap.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci

      For this feature you don't need the lens data base. After a simple auto calibration every lens has a 360° focus trough… that is enough for muscle memory. Of course that doesn't meant that every lens has the same focus distance at a certain position, but at least you have a similar "sensitivity" to hand movement. You still have to calibrate with a data base, as the motor has to figure out the his starting position after installation. It takes a second an zero effort, so, that is not a problem. The data base would be necessary to show correct distances for focus points… and for features like a "possible" DoF indicator @@KaarloMedia

    • @KaarloMedia
      @KaarloMedia Před 9 měsíci

      @@MediaDivision I see! Thank you for the thorough explanation. The auto calibration still relies on the user to set close + infinity points manually on lenses that don't have hard stops, right? This is somewhat of a time sink.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 9 měsíci +1

      of course… if you have a camera with lens data communication, that might be unnecessary. If you don't the data base will not help you.
