The lenses to rule anamorphic filmmaking? Test and comparison of the DZOfilm PAVO lenses

  • We are diving once more deep into the realm of anamorphic shooting, with DZO new 2x anamorphic lenses… the PAVO. Full blown anamorphic cine lenses that try to win the hearts of the community by offering a classic anamorphic look while still being light and small enough to fit smaller production needs… without sacrificing image quality?! All that at a competitive price?!
    Let’s see if DZOfilm built the one lens to rule them all … we put the PAVO anamorphic lenses to the test. We brought a PAVO set in the studio, and made a shootout against an Atlas Orion. Our test footage has been shot on Alexa, a MAVO, and a Lumix S5IIx. We also included some experiments with anamorphic auto focus using a DJI LiDAR system. After all that we bring the PAVO on location to tell you, how they work in a tough production environment.

Went into one of the cowboy hat shops and it was a one off custom for $200 that fit like a glove. The trick to the straw hats is to spend some good money on them cause the cheap ones fall apart and get crushed easily (my dog use to always sit on them)

    Never the less, such a wonderful insight of the anamorphic series update! I also did crossed my mind in trying out the PAVOs when it was announced, but really lacked information and tests reels around. Definitely a good series of lens for production houses and art houses to get into their inventory. Very very very torn apart between this and the Atlas Mercuries, but thats basically comparing apples to oranges.

    I love Anamorphic so much and really appreciate the video. To me these Pavo's are way too soft for me. Anamorphic isn't about sharpness, but man these turn detail into butter. Been wanting to see more examples of these and I think even though their larger and heavier, the Laowa Proteus are the better choice. Although I'd love to test both sets together myself before being too sure.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 měsíci

      Like I said... there is no right or wrong. Image quality with anamorphic is highly subjective. I think that anamorphic lenses should break up the details. having seen PAVO and ORION side by side, I don't see the Proteus being that much better in that regard, but, I have not tried in the same context.

    Great analysis and really useful to compare with the Orions. To my mind it looks like the Pavos are lighter, have more subtle flares and are marginally better for filming wide open and close-up, but I would prefer the Orions for night-time shots with out-of-focus lights in the background, because I don't like that messy boke. Great to have this info on these lenses.

    Dreamy video as always! The music choice was very fitting, even bobbed my head to some of the tunes. It's crazy that 5500€ per lens is considered a value option. If they were like 799€ then I'd consider saving up, but I get it's not cheap to make. Already looking forwards to the next video :D

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Thanks a lot.... well, you always have to see price & value in context. 5K is cheap for anamorphic cine lenses, especially 2x ones, these are definitely for professionals that price these into their projects budgets.... and rentals of course. Nice to have you around

  • @craynotcreigh
    @craynotcreigh Před 5 měsíci +3

    Another great video. While they may be a convenient anamorphic solution, in my opinion they suffer from the same issue that all dzo optics do, a very unnatural and unattractive look. The sharpness is overt and almost crunchy and the fall off and bokeh is confused in how it presents is self in comparison. The bokeh is as you said messy, and has a jittery look on the focus pulls and the fall off seems to be fairly harsh adding to the crunchy look. The flares aren't anything special, fine if you want something more controlled but not my cup of tea.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks a lot... I don't see a "very unnatural and unattractive look" on DZO lenses in general or on the PAVO.... but like I say in the video: Assessment of lenses - especially anamorphic - is so subjective, you got to find what is right for you. Thanks for your input!!

    Another totally stellar video from Media Division! Would love to see you do a review/discussion on the Nisi Athena lens set. @MediaDivision  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks a lot Kamasutra… Nisi actually contacted us about that, but they didn't like our timing requirements (we can't do something like this in a couple of weeks), and we can't do something of this complexity with the attached cost without their sponsoring. There are just a handful people watching tests of cine lenses (as this video shows - it made 90$ revenue), so, there is little incentive for us to spend 50 days of work to do a Athena test. If you ever have a chance to shoot on Xelmus, I'd love to see what you do with them. Sadly they seem to be less popular, expensive, and in short supply from being manufactured in Ukraine. Also I'm probably in the minority of folks who LIKE that much flare. As in, I've never felt JJ Abrams overuses them, I loved Star Trek 2009, etc, so that probably says everything you need to know.

      @@MediaDivision true, you could rent ... but if you shoot for long enough it becomes cheaper to own, but you can't own Panavision. • @MediaDivision

      Yes, I know… but owning Apollo makes no sense for owner operators. In that realm and up you rent… I know big commercial and Hollywood DoPs - and nobody owns because it is "cheaper"… you choose from project to project depending on the look you are after and others have a word in that, too. Apollo is for bigger production companies and rentals… and maybe 5 rich dudes just because. Panavision lenses are just as hard or easy to operate as the Apollo or other lower end options… they even have lenses designed for drones… but… they will not rent out to you unless you have some credits behind you. I am a huge fan but i think I find these kind of reviews a little inconclusive. For the money of course the lenses are going to be good but in context better than whats out there?? I would much rather see bts from your own work or more importantly know what and why you choose certain gear rather than review gear im not sure you would want to use. Im not sure if you have given a mavo breakdown but your choice of that say over other brands is interesting in itself. Likewise what is your go to lens for the mavo? Why the s5ii? Not fuji? Or Sony or Canon?? Is full frame important? What about Fuji large format?? Whats the deal with the Alexa M?? Would love to know more about your passion work, is it shorts, docs but most of all it would be interesting to see you problem solve in real world situations as your charm personality and pragmatic approach to filming would seem ideally suited to shine in perhaps less controlled situations. Just a thought. Meanwhile thanks for the excellent work and insights.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for beeing a fan.... this is a long one but I'll try to shed some light.
      1. This is a review and not a comparison. Would a comparison of the impertinent conteders be cool... sure, But we can't go out and buy/rent all of those to make an episode that is interesting do 50 people. Also, you can't expect the manufacturers to sponsor something like this. SCOPE chapter two tried something like that and........ look at the views.
      2. This is why I usually show a lot of BTS... you see exactly what gear I use and with basic filmmaker knowledge you figure out why.... just as I do along the way. Why we use one product over the other? Availability? Convenience? Experience? All of that. We found out that either people find you to far ahead or to far behind to make those "whow and why" videos appeling to a larger audience.... how did we find out? We tried.
      3. The MAVO LF is a super versatile and convenient camera. ProRes workflows are easy and fast. You have a perfect opengate LOG "negative". No fiddling, full manual, full cine cam. You appreciate things like that vs. cameras like the Bs1H where you hang to much in menus, it tries too much at once.
      4. I choose lenses depending on the project, what I am going for, what I need practically. That can be an expensive vintage cine lens or a cheap kit zoom. If you need a light servo lens with close focus and the option to reframe, the latter will be the better choice. When you do a lot of things at the same time.... practical aspects become VERY important.
      5. The S5IIx is a super convenient allrounder with great PDAF and stabilisation.... if you run around on fairs or events, for BTS, for scouting .... cine cams are pretty useless. Battery consumption alone will ruin your day. Why Panasonic? I have been using them for ages, I am used to them, I have a collaboration history with Panasonic, good bang for the buck, I like the video centric approach of them.... could you use fujisonycanon instead?... sure. Pick your hero. The end result will be largely indistinguishable. Practical aspect are what matters here, and Panasonic really works for me in that department.
      6. Full Frame is very clean in difficult lighting situations and it allows you to crop to anything smaller if needed. In ideal circumstances format doesn't matter, but in the situations described above, that is hardly ever the case.
      7. I had the GFX 100 II in my hands on a trade show but I haven't worked with it.... I would like to. Fuji??? Send me one!
      Of course, that camera is not video centric and if your choice is a cine cam with a smaller sensor or a hybrid like the GFX with a larger one, the cine cam is the better choice. Full Frame is usually the best choice as there are so many interesting lens choices out there.
      8. I always wanted to have an Alexa, but the classic/XT/SXT are the only affordable ones and the M is the only one of those that is light enough to work within my infra structure. Why Alexa? It is part of hunting the unicorn that is my idea of a cinematic image. I might do an episode about that.... soonish. I already shot parts for that.
      9. It is nice of you to care about me and my opinions in that context... let me tell you that on CZcams and in the industry nobody cares about me.... or most other individuals. It doesn't work. That is not even negative.... it all comes together when you put your mind, time, and passion to it. I am not a motivational speaker, but if you have a specific question I might have the answer. For our Kubrick member we do consultation in video calls.... just can't do one on one for everyone... I got kids to feed.
      I hope that helps a bit

      @@MediaDivision hey thanks for taking the time to reply in such detail. Much appreciated. I totally understand the need to keep content aligned to CZcams as a platform and the pragmatic nature of devising content accordingly in terms of time resources and ROI. I guess i see maybe too many CZcams channels who have people as their front end who are strangely unqualified and in many ways their “we are all learning as we go along” is their USP. Unfortunately many of them are not particularly good communicators and frankly it can be painful hoping to be surprised by a gem of actionable knowledge popping up. Of course some are but their insights with some notable exceptions of predictably limited. I guess i see you as hugely qualified authoritative voice and as a fantastic communicator not least because of your confident demeanour and self effacing charm. I would just love to see more aspects of your work insights and opinion away from kit reviews. I know you have done spectacular work on specialist subjects but those are by their very nature very complete as stand alone work. Your camera choice is wholly understandable and makes perfect sense maybe i would love to see you break down a scene from a film or host a roundtable on filmmaking in general with some if your friends and collaborators. I understand its all time and resource dependent so maybe i need to delve deeper into your ecosystem of content offerings. Thanks so much for all your work and your reply.

      I would totally put myself and this channel in the: “we are all learning as we go along” category. I am self taught and … boy, just look a few year back in our episodes and we are i a totally diffrent class. We all came a long way together and there is something nice about sharing that journey. You choose which one makes sense to follow depending on where you are. There are many here that accuse us for being to professional to follow - and I get it, but we have to be somewhere where we feel it is interesting for us to be. This channel is meant to be educational for us just as well as the audience. The round table is a nice idea, but, the problem is always to get the right people together… timing wise and considering profession. That would be something for a trade show…… maybe I will do something like that… thanks for the input.
