    We are testing the Contax Zeiss 35-70mm f/3.4 - a popular vintage "all in one" zoom lens with macro function. The Contax Zeiss lens lineup where released at the same time Zeiss offered their legendary Super Speed Cine lenses and they share many traits in design and glass. The Contax Zeiss are very thought after lenses for filmmakers delivering a very nice balance between image quality and vintage traits while providing a long focus throw and sturdy built. They are very easy to mod to EF or to adapt to shorter flange mounts
    Taken from our epic episode "Legendary cine lenses on a budget - Zeiss Super Speeds vs Contax Zeiss" where we build a Contax Zeiss "Super Speed" set, with history, test, battles, modding, and so much more:

    I have this lens and is very much one of my favorites. I use it many times with my Pocket 4k.
    The extra macro feature is amazing. I shot some of my best photos with this lens. Pure love!

    35-70 is my next Contax, played with one on a shoot on Friday, much smaller than I had anticipated in the hand.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, it is tiny compared to modern lenses. I like it because it is considerably softer than the primes, giving it a nice cinematic look. The push pull is not really what you want in a film context.

      Thanks Sean! We have a viriety of Projectors that we used over time… in this one it is a Siemens 2000 16mm projector in the back and a Bolex Paillard 8mm in the front

    this is a great video. I am curious, how does the parfocal behavior of this lens compare to say the behavior of some of the cine zoom glass that the team has looked at?

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thanks... not comparable. Like we discussed in the other thread: I am not aware of any vintage photo zoom that has a compensator group. This is lens is not parfocal. You might be able to shim it to something acceptable, but I have doubts. The "push/pull" mechanism makes it unusable for zoom action in a take.

      @@MediaDivision thanks again for the insight. It's nice to hear extended thoughts on some of these technical points that may only end up being a handful of lines within a video. Is the channel explore parfocal lenses from back in that era? I wonder if people typically try using vintage Cinema glass compared to modern options?

  • @DevaStationCrew
    @DevaStationCrew Před 2 lety +1

    Appreciate the effort. I want to build my first vintage set for video work but I can't really afford the Leica R/Zeiss and I can't find any Canon FD wide lenses in my local market. Can you recommend a good budget frendly set for video? let's imagine there was no Canon/ Leica/ Zeiss option... what would be on your list ?

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 2 lety +3

      Good question... without personal experience probably Nikkor or Minolta. It might sound strange from my mouth, it doesn't matter that much.

    Do you recommend any cheap vintage alternatives if you want images similar to the shinning (or other kubrick films shot with zeiss ultra speed ) I just love the softness and the effect with light sources

    • @MediaDivision

      Any faster vintage lens will do… Zeiss Jena are popular. If you refer to the triangle Bokeh, I have no recommendation

    Why have the views gone so low on this excellent channel of late? Even 1 month ago, the lowest was around 10K. Now struggling to crack 1K. CZcams algorithm playing games? If so, it's pretty dreadful the way they can do that.

      These videos where not pushed to out subs nor in our notification feed… these are segments of older episodes that are designed for better discovery and convenience. The are not as interesting to a broader audience either as the only address a specific lens each. Thats all.

    Thanks man! Its perfect. I'm looking for info on a Zeiss Distagon I saw in the making of opera 1987 Dario Argento but I can't see what kind of one it is? Can you help with that? Respect from DK.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 2 lety +3

      for zooming during shots..... no. But as this lens is not parfocal you will not do that anyway. If you just treat it as 3 primes in one... sure. I like that it is not as sharp as the primes. It looks quite cinematic in that regard

    This lens uses the same optics as Minolta MD 35-70mm F3.5 and in a side by side, no one could tell a difference! The Minolta is quite a lot cheaper these days but if you want a restored Minolta, you are paying premium although 100 euro for such a lens is pretty good money still.
