Mechanical Trim Indicator/Actuator Proto

The "0" marks on the actuator at the engine and the on the tape at the indicator designate neutral trim; I define neutral trim as the point at which the prop shaft is parallel with the keel. I find it a comforting reference to have while running high speeds.

      The engine only has about three hours on it and the break-in is 10 hours so I haven't pushed it very hard yet. Once the weather warms up and it gets some more hours I'll let you know.

    I had a Kiekhaefer Mercury in the 70s and early 80s on a 15ft Redfish. It was battleship grey. No neutral, direct drive. For reverse you would pull the throttle lever all the way back towards you which would spin the distributor 180 degrees the you would hit the starter button with you thumb(it was mounted on top of the throttle lever) and it would start in reverse. (The engine would rotate backwards). It worked incredibly well and was fairly dependable. It was nicknamed “The Pier Buster” some people would have trouble starting in reverse so it was a little tough to control in tight spaces. It was a really fun time .

    Thanks, my motor is the 1150 TOP, I'd like to get 60 on a 16' low profile fiberglass boat but I'm only getting 42 with stock size stainless. Do you have any idea how much pitch I should start with? I don't care about a hole-shot.

    • @peter1708
      @peter1708 Před 10 měsíci

      I'm not sure. If you have a tach, prop it for max recommended rpm. 19 to 20 inch 3 blade may be a reasonable starting point. If you can raise the engine (w/out losing water pressure), you can maybe run a slightly taller prop. My anti-vent plate is about 5" above bottom and I've got the top 2 inlet holes blocked and I have a water pressure gauge. Gi over to screamandfly.com, lot of hi-po outboard guys there on that forum. Good luck!

      Thanks! I'm not a real mechanical guy and didn't build the engine. That being said, there is a Mercury forum (Johnsoldmercurysite dot com) which has a fantastic membership of all things Mercury up to about 1988 or so (last year of the inline 6's). I would suggest you ask some questions there, review their extensive library, etc. I'm a member (username Peter1708) so you can PM me from there. Best of luck! Pete.
