legend has it he is still accelerating and the lake is endless.
God, I wish I still had mine. I love the V6 for sure but the I6 is the SBC of the marine world.
Sweet boat n set up love those Towers of Power!! They turn up so well!! Congratulations! I am currently rebuilt 1972 75 Johnson Stinger it has the hydro electric shift I am going to have the head decked and punch it out and put high compression pistons in ! Put on my lil Glastron 16 erefinishing hull finish clear coat to bring the metallic finish back to life. Wife’s sewing the upholstery!! Labor of love!!
Sounds like a very cool project! Those Stingers are iconic engines, good luck!
Awesome setup!!
Real nice. That motor is just humming along. Great job.👍👍👍
This is a beautiful work of art and she sounds amazing !!!!
This is the coolest boat ever, sure wish I had the ability to build something like this!
An extended video where you include the initial idle, hole shot, and then final idle where you park it would be nice. Looking forward to the new season. :)
beyond sweet
What a beautiful boat! And that lake Crescent water thanks for the views of it! I grew up in Kitsap County skiing behind several tower of powers. My Dad grew up on Hood Canal skiing behind a Sande Ace
Love the Sande Aces, iconic PNW boats!
Beautiful boat combo, and the location is breathtaking.
Thanks for sharing this video, wow what aa ride! Beautiful boat!
I have a Purple metal flake 1971 14 ft Sidewinder with a 1971 Thunderbolt Mercury Kierkegaard 80 H.P. Motor ..... I LOVE IT..
I once had a red metal flake sidewinder. a 16 footer i think with a 115 johnson. I loved that boat.
I love it wen you peg that throttle. What a sound
❤️Ein wunderschönes Boot 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Holy cow! What a heavy hitter
Love those old Merc's
Very cool nothing performs like a good light wooden boat
Wow that is some boat!
Man that thing sounds nice.
Spectacular!
Beautiful
That is sweeet!
I miss those old Merc's.
cruises at 65 mph, perfect.
Plaid shirt in a mahogany boat with an old tower of power. 'nuff said.
That goes forward...!👍
i love straight six
These things just loved the fuel
Nice
Nice boat! I can't figure out where you're gonna put the trolling motor, though. 😁
70.1 MPH is 🔥S M O K I N🔥 FAST
This boat fly's🚤👍🏻
Hi Peter, what a fantastic video that showcases the raw energy behind your beautiful boat! I have recently restored a Poncelet 500 and a 1979 Mercury 90 6cyl to stock. She is running sweet but it is time to explore what these engines can really re so may I pick your brains about tuning, brackets and parts etc?
Cheers.
Thanks! I'm not a real mechanical guy and didn't build the engine. That being said, there is a Mercury forum (Johnsoldmercurysite dot com) which has a fantastic membership of all things Mercury up to about 1988 or so (last year of the inline 6's). I would suggest you ask some questions there, review their extensive library, etc. I'm a member (username Peter1708) so you can PM me from there. Best of luck! Pete.
Nice!...Beautiful set up and great choice on the location as well....Is that Lake Crescent in WA state? 👌😉
The one and only, a rare calm day ;)
I got 2 motors 1 runs other i'm going to re build if I find the parts cool boat and fast I like
I'd be scared this kind of power would rip out the transom it's attached to in a homemade wooden boat.
Dont believe that merc ever msde a 70 hp in black with that hood and front covet ! Last 70 inline in black was 61 or 62 i believe.
I have a 59 mark 700( 70 hp ) in beautiful white .
The last 70 inline still had the recoil handle upper right of yop cover.
Awesome video my 1986 tower of power uses so much fuel I am not sure how many times I can run it this year with fuel costs so high @10 gallons per hour.
Thanks. Non-ethanol premium just hit $6.00 per gallon out here. Need to think in terms of Smiles per Gallon, 😉.
Peter, love this boat and motor!! do you use a "hot foot"?
Thanks! Yes on the Hot Foot, and I also have the Seastar blinker style trim switch on the steering wheel hub, home made trim actuator/indicator and a neutral safety bypass switch to start her in gear - helps reduce wear on LU when shifting from N to F.
@@peter1708 nice!!!! Is the hot foot pretty responsive?
@@pcbw75 Anecdotally there does seem to be a bit less "lag" when flooring it, I like it.
@@peter1708 oh that's awesome! love to see a vid on your hotfoot!
Would you be willing to share more about your hull design? Is it your own or from plans you purchased?
Boat is designed by Ken Bassett and the design is called "Rascal". Cold molded, batten seam construction, plans are available at www.woodenboatstore.com .She's 14'10'' long and I planked her in mahogany and maple.
Thanks, my motor is the 1150 TOP, I'd like to get 60 on a 16' low profile fiberglass boat but I'm only getting 42 with stock size stainless. Do you have any idea how much pitch I should start with? I don't care about a hole-shot.
I'm not sure. If you have a tach, prop it for max recommended rpm. 19 to 20 inch 3 blade may be a reasonable starting point. If you can raise the engine (w/out losing water pressure), you can maybe run a slightly taller prop. My anti-vent plate is about 5" above bottom and I've got the top 2 inlet holes blocked and I have a water pressure gauge. Gi over to screamandfly.com, lot of hi-po outboard guys there on that forum. Good luck!
hi, Peter only new to this channel. the inline 6 on the back, did you get the engine going yourself? I'm currently working on restoring my dad's old speed boat that has a mariner 140hp which is practically the same as a mercury 1400 and I need some tips and advice. be awesome if you could help me out.
I bought the engine already running good, but repainted her and put new decals on. Sound like you have a really cool project! Two sites I recommend for technical advice, parts, etc. are the MercuryOutpost subforum on Fiberglassics dot com, and JohnsOldMercurysSIte dot com. Members on those sites are very knowledgeable, fiendly and helpful. Also take a look at "MerCSon L6" here on YT. Good luck!
Join some facebook marketplace groups for the merc and you can ask questions and get answers.
I would be happy to get 48 mph out of my Montauk 17
Did you have to do any mods to the transom to tolerate that kind of power?
No mods, the transom is almost 3" thick made of mahogany and ash, with a massive knee connecting it to the keel framing.
What are your rpms at 70ish?
I have a similiar set up, a 115 on a 15' 1968 glass starcraft.
right at about 5800.
How long did it take to build the boat?
The build took just over 4 years, working on it during weekends primarily.
Fantastic boat! You did a nice job on the Merc too. But frankly, at 70 mph, I think you are a little crazy to not be wearing a helmet and HANS device....
What does the boat weigh
Hull about 750, total about 1200 with engine, etc. All estimates :)
May I ask what prop
24" pitch chopper.
what prop are you running?
24" small ear chopper.
did u trim up at full throttle...get some more mph out of it
nvm i see it up some...i get most mph at point of borderline cavitation and bow up pretty high
She's trimmed a couple of degrees past zero (shaft parallel to keel).
What is your WOT rpm?
5800 spinning a 24" pitch chopper.
What hp
1980 140hp. Same as a modern 115hp.
@@peter1708 If I remember correctly, the only difference between the 90hp, 115hp, and the 140hp was carbs and reed valves.
looks very similar to a Raveau
