  • An impeller swap it a must on any outboard if you want it to last. Not that hard to do. Just take your time. We swapped it out on a 1986 Tower of Power Mercury. I feel a lot better knowing that it will stay cool.

    The small hose that you cut when pulling the leg off is actually the speedo tube that goes up to your gauge.. everytime I do a water pump I remove that tube and fitting and clean out the hole that the water flows up .. there is a small pilot hole at the front of the gearbox where water rushes into and up that hose .. just a tip for your next video as that hole clogs up all the time especially if the engine is used in salt water

      You are correct. I had figured that out later when the tube broke under the dash. After tracing it back the light bulb lit up.
      Thanks for the tip and you might see a quick video on keep the hose clear. We have to keep these things running.

    About to do the impeller on my Tower of Power 115 this week. Just picked the boat up 2 weeks ago so 🤞🏻 everything goes well and solves my no water out of the telltale issue

      it should. it is not that bad as long as the other mechanics used grease or something to keep the corrosion down. It should be fine. Good luck. We just love the Tower of Power. it just works.
      good luck

      Sorry for the delayed response. Was OOT and of course the day job gets in the way :)
      if it is not too late. I would go grab an inspection camera and put it up the tube so you can see if you have it in correctly. Also a little lube on the end could not hurt. www.harborfreight.com/digital-inspection-camera-61839.html
      hope if works out for you. let us know.

    Why did you speed up putting the lower end back on & alignment.
    That is important..

    Thanks for this vid i just aquired a 1979 90hp 6cyl and i dont see a oil dipstick?am i missing something?thanks anyway for the vids!

      Sorry for the delay. I was in the woods with the scouts and did not have fancy internet. :) These engines are 2 cycle so the oil is in the fuel. Most of these outboards come with an automatic oiler. Mine has been taken out so I mix it with the gas when I fill it. Now you do need to be aware of the lower unit oil level. czcams.com/video/soekr7hXi1g/video.htmlsi=PAB9DSwSoHq3LhAu

    How did you manually put your lower unit in gear?

    • @5LakesGarage
      @5LakesGarage  Před 5 měsíci

      The shifter rod. I think it was a pull up to engage it. It might be a push. can't remember. Ideally, I should have put it in gear before i took it off.
      Hope that helps.

      i have a few coming up when i have time. I plan on installing a fish finder on a Carolina Skiff in which we have to mount the transceiver and run the wire. And i really don't want too but might have to do some repair on the transom on the Blue Goose. It is almost 50 years old. Stay Tuned.
