Agreed, I'd say it's more tied to area. I've known some badass women who drive diesels and farm machinery. Men and women who have only grown up in urban areas rarely know how to handle bigger trucks (and it shows in pick ups who think that weather can never affect them then get screwed by wind and snow when they hit large, open areas out of the city)

The amount of fossil fuels consumed to power an EV far outweigh those expended by a diesel.

Nope. I've done the math for a petrol car and they emit about 8800lbs of carbon per year (assuming 2000 miles driven for all calculations). The carbon emissions of an EV are dependent on where the power comes from. An EV powered by a coal plant, the dirtiest form of power generation, has a carbon footprint of 8100 lbs per year. I don't remember the exact numbers for natural gas, the most common power generation method in the US, but I think it's about 6000 lbs of carbon per year.
Diesel vehicles emit about 60% more carbon than petrol. Applying that, a diesel vehicle emits about 14000 lbs of carbon into the air per year.
