That boat rides in the water very well. At speed, on plane, about the only thing in the water is the motor.... Plus, it's One Damned Gorgeous Machine!!! 👍👍
That's a beautiful setup Peter, over 60 mph, wind in your face, tiny boat, nothing else like it!! I'm envious!! My father had an outboard that looked allot like that one. A little older though I think, it was 60 or 65 horsepower inline 6 with direct reverse. When you pulled the throttle back past idle it shut down then you pushed a button on top of the throttle leaver and it restarted with the engine running backwards!! One of the benefits of a two stroke engine. If you got into trouble and tried to restart in reverse before the engine had stopped turning in forward there was a good chance you would twist off the starter shaft. It happened! Maneuvering in tight quarters took a little thought and some patience!!
Beautiful boat! My dad had a 50 Mercury from 1965-66. Served us well for over 40 years till he bought a 50hp Mercury four-stroke. I’ve still got my grandfather’s 1956 Mercury Mark 5 5-hp. Still runs.
Love that. It's beautiful. My dad had a home built very similar with a Mercury like that in New Zealand. Can't remember the HP now but he called it "Mercury Kid".
I have this 80HP engine in white from 1964. Hasn't run since 1978 or so but ran fine at that time. If anyone is interested it's for sale in Dallas, TX. Comment back here.
Kinda shaped like my 55 feathercraft vagabond . I repowered it with a 70 johnson I can't get passed 45 without it getting getting so sketchy you have no choice but to let out of her or bad things are gonna happen!! That's only about 5/8 throttle .. Nice boat you have it's beautiful and will scat .
Thank you. The bottom design is very modern - it is a very shallow V (5 deg dead rise) and incorporates a 12" wide pad, similar to high speed bass boats. Above 45mph or so, only the last 1'-2' of the pad is in the water. '
I built the boat, it was designed by Ken Bassett and is called Rascal, plans from Wooden Boat Magazine. Cold-molded batten seam construction. Lots have been built, there is one that has gone 72mph out there. The engine started as a 1961 FGS Merc 800 short shaft, switched out the 800 power head for a 1964 1000 power head, fits nicely. 59.7mph so far.
Awesome. I'm building a 61 Merc 700 Dockbuster, hoping for 35 mph on my Crestliner Voyager Hardtop. Looking at possible hull designs for a small wooden cottage boat to run vintage Mercury motors on, that design might be the ticket. How's it doing in heavy chop at modest speeds?
That 700 should be cool! The boat is essentially flat bottomed, so it does pound in a chop. At speed, I've found that it will skim over the tops of the waves in the right conditions. With the 800 power head, the top speed was 52.7mph, your 700 might get close to that since the dock buster is much lighter (no gear shift, etc.). The boat is a fun build, challenging at times, but satisfying, a real head turner.
Very encouraging!! We have a 1961 (or 2) Merc 700 that has been in the family since 1964. It hasn't been started since about 1989 (carb flooding). I have an interest to see if I can get it running again. Can you tell me anything about sourcing parts or service information on this old stallion?
Absolutely! Go to the "Mercury Outpost: sub-forum on the Fiberglassics website. Post a new topic about your problem/questions; there are guys who post regularly there with all kinds of knowledge and can help you identify issues, find parts, etc. - real nice people. @@peter1708 Thanks. Rascal was the starting point for Attitude where I took tumblehome to an extreme. See King Hell Boats. Reward is the next step. Never found a good fender solution.
That is a feature in the Sony hdr-as100v action cam. It has built in GPS and links that data to the video automatically. Great for validating the dashboard speedo, too. Thanks for watching, Pete.
@@ct1762 0:44 it’s not as crisp as I’m used to. Possibly a weak reed valve , coil, plug or plug wire. It’s not by much. Sounds crisp at the beginning of the run.
The design is called Rascal and is modeled after a 1937 Century Thunderbolt (I think), but with an altered bottom and modified for outboard. The designer is Ken Bassett and plans are available at the Wooden Boat Store.

The old "Tower of Power" Mercury outboard motors. Awesome.
I grew up with these Mercury engines and what I just saw was SWEET and sent a chill down my spine. Thank you for the memories!

In 1960, my dad had a Glastron Surflite with a red/white Mercury Mk 78A. I now have a Javelin with a Mercury 90. I’ve always liked Mercury outboards..

That's a beautiful classic looking speedster. Well done!
So good to see the older boats on the water. It sounds & looks great!!

Beautiful boat and classic Mercury outboard. Pretty tight on the 60 m.p.h. isn’t too shabby either.👍👍
Magnificent, both boat and motor. I love the old tall, lean, handsome straight six mercs. I have a vintage Mark 20.
Gotta love the nostalgic stuff !
Beautiful !!
Love it.
Absoloute love this. Incredible seeing such a cool hand build short boat at those speeds. Beautiful build!
Great looking boat, love the speed, love the motor!

Good job. That is one beautiful boat.
Awesome boat. Great video
We had that same 80 horse motor brand new in 1961 on a 16 ft Lonestar aluminum runabout. Great memories.
Well done. Nice video

Beautiful boat that is a serious amount of HP on that thing
95km/h with a classic, well done.
Straight six 2-stroke. . . musical! Pretty boat too.

Lovely boat 😍
awesome, better that al the new ones I would say
Beauty. Boat and outboard.
Awesome ride
My first boat was a 60’s Glastron with a 1965 Mercury 50 hp... people these days never believe me when I tell them Mercury’s were originally white.
My 56 was white with gold trim.
I remember when they were red and before that they were green
what a beauty
Now that's on plane!
What a beauty
What a Machine,,, What "Craftsmanship",,,, Leonardo da Vinci and "Michelangelo" Would Be Proud,,,
Thanks!
Beautiful boat😉👍
That's one fine looking boat that doesn't half go.

Nice engine...tower of power
So i build a very, extremely, supertiny boat...... lets find the biggest outboard engine there is

Nice kick ass boat🐗🐗🐗👍
Classic! Freakin' CLASSIC!!!
Oooh! Nice
I actually had a boat just like that in the 70’s
Nice
where is this filmed at?? its so nice
Lake Crescent in NW Washington state. It's a fairly remote lake in the Olympic National Park, about 600' deep, very cold and clear.
Very nice. I'm curious about your fenders.
They're Akua Bass Boat Fenders, they work well with the tumblehome, also high quality.
@@peter1708 Thanks. Rascal was the starting point for Attitude where I took tumblehome to an extreme. See King Hell Boats. Reward is the next step. Never found a good fender solution.
Lake crescent!
Is there a forum you recommend for discussing how to repair and maintain these motors?
johnsoldmercurysite.com or fiberglassics.com both are great resources with very smart people who have decades of experience with these old engines.
So many of those motors were scrapped just because no one realized that the vacuum lines were rotted and cracked.
how did you get a accurate speedometer on your video

Beautiful boat. Sounds like the timing is off at high RPM’s.
please explain how the timing is "off"? is it surging? i sure can't hear anything wrong.

Is this Lake Tahoe ? Where is this shot at
Lake Crescent in Washington state.
A copy of the italian classic Aquarama riva?

Perfect spot for a beautiful run, in that gorgeous boat. Where is that?

who built the merc ?
Local guy here in Washington nicknamed Doc Frankenmerc. The engine is a 1961 800 short shaft, with a rebuilt1964 1000 power head.
