Always missing your shot under pressure? It could be a case of “buck-fever” or the anxiety and fear that often comes with having to perform under pressure in a moment of truth. In this video, I explain a little of my own experience with this and hopefully some useful techniques to help manage and perhaps, with some luck, successfully execute your next shot under pressure.

Thank you for taking the time for the great explanation / demo for us noobs. Archer from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Born raised Kona - hunted that whole island especially that area - worked the ranch with cousins just couple miles from that gate. Right after school other go beach and party Ol As but no we went hunting- just the kids . Uncles only said be safe and bring back meat 🥩 !!!!’
Thanks Ryan. As Big Island hunter I can understand the frustration. However, I also have been proactive about being a contributing member to the conservation of game and endangered species on Maunakea and Maunaloa by volunteering on restoration and cat control efforts. The door swings both ways if everyone helps to improve forest habitat on the mountain and recruit people from both communities to see each others views then change can occur. That’s how the bag limits got expanded.😜
Well i like your video till u said u were gonna use rage BH. I can guarantee that if u go with a single bevel BH and 500 grain or more arrow u will blow through everything in North America. And if u ever shoot a bad angle shot u will not blow through with a rage and u will eventually lose an animal sooner or later just my 2 cts. But i will say it is great seeing fellow archers who look like me hunting👍🏽
GREAT VIDEO!
Are you able to hunt public with any sort of success in Lanai?
Awesome video other than now your making me wish i would have tried harder to make it out a couples weeks ago. But I drew my first lanai Axis deer tag but had things come up making it very difficult to get out there. Hopefully next year
Awesome bradda, just came back from my first trip learned plenty! Learned from this video too alohas 🤙🏾
Great video. Can't wait to see more content on skill set.
Congrats!
Love the content!! You mentioned being worried about losing some carbon if you strip the fletching- just set the back of the arrow in acetone for a few hours and the superglue turns into a soft gelatin you can wipe off with a rag 👍
Nice buck congrats!! Good to see there are still some over there.
🔥🔥🔥
I did a video of arrow flight on my channel, and I came to the same conclusion as you. I believe drag on the broad head and vanes of the arrow is actually what causes the drop. I believe the shot of the bow grabs their attention, and they respond to the arrow because they can hear it coming at them like a batter can hear a baseball coming to home plate.
I'm old enough to know when someone is speaking from experience, and you clearly are. Thought you had some great content here, anecdotal experience that could probably be measured in a lab--but it would not be as credible as your testimony.
Great hunt Ryan! I’ve been back on the mainland over three years already, definitely miss spending time on Lanai!
Killa knowledge bradda we had 4th week 2024 this year I shoot at a buck around 62 yards perfect shot but buck wen duck me he drop super low and turn so I believe the arrow was the reason why it duck me but cool knowledge bradda keep it up Hawaiian
I had a whitetail sit and wait for the arrow to come in. He didn't try to jump until it was too late. I think it was the sight of the arrow and not the sound. There was plenty of time if he was reacting to the sound. However they can't see detail very far so the smaller object coming at him didn't seem dangerous until it got close.
Every animal has their own personality traits. Yours may have just been not concerned with your shot, meaning it may have been completely unaware of your presence, thus it caught him off guard, or it was just a dumb deer.
@@6saturdaysaweek We were definitely making eye contact for about two minutes. I was far enough away he couldn't really see me in detail as it was the last few minutes of legal light. So he froze until he could understand the threat.
It’s hard to beat experience. Thanks from a very informative video.
Awesome pursuit, viens do yend to bring all the noise in flight, i think a stiffer spine (to slow down the string) like new stiff shocks will control the string motion and reduce sound, then try to go with minimal broadhead, minimal vein and thin arrow width
No disrespect but to help you with this topic I posted a video a year ago on this (Arrow Noise: Why Deer Duck the Arrow) and my broadhead video I posted a month ago it is 95 percent vane noise. Good video. Again no disrespect not promoting my cringy videos just giving you affirmations of this topic
I'm 67 been shooting a bow since I'm 7 yrs old.I don't shoot arrows with plastic vains.4 inch rt wing feather fletching. They weigh less than one vane(foc) even when damaged they still fly straight.Tear a plastic vain they whistle and don't fly straigh.
Google…the shocking science of string jumping by Chuck Adams…these days I am a Traditional bow hunter (stick bow) and understanding bow/arrow noise when hunting whitetail deer is essential! Some articles will say a WT can hear at 54,000 hertz others say 60,000…humans 20k hertz…research has found that WT react more to high pitch noises than low base noises…for my setup I’ve found the perfectly tuned and balanced arrow is your most accurate, efficient, penetrating and quiet arrow…my Trad bow inside of 30 I’ve found for WT to be the most effective-I’ve hit a number of WT through the scapula with my Hoyt Hypertech bc they ducked the arrow…I’ve found that a solid fixed blade with no cut outs is significantly quieter-even quieter than my mechanical’s out of my compound…your absolutely correct about vein height…I shoot a 5” aggressive helical 3 fletch feather’s with a 585grn arrow out of a 63# big Jim Buffalo with either a two blade solid or 4 blade solid fixed blade-I’ve found it to be extremely deadly…swift silent and deadly…I’ve gotten complete pass thru’s on my last 3 WT
Interesting point you make about the Htz levels deer can hear at.
I did go search that since you mentioned it. Good stuff! I might have to concur on the frequency of the sound thing as well. My trad arrows are actually quite loud compared to my compound, yet I definitely had far less axis move on the shot when stickbow hunting. I just don't get um because I just flat out miss more with the stick haha! Perhaps the faster higher speed "hiss" is more threatening to them than a lower pitch sound of my slower trad arrows.
@@ryankohatsu8836 I think you may be on to something. Maybe the sound is higher pitched and more intense with the increase speed of a compound.
great video thanks
Congrats on your deer! Looks like a great hunt opportunity. Where would I find out more about hunting on Lanai?
DLNR website and regs for the state public hunts. Pulama Game Management on Lanai also has lots of axis deer hunting opportunities on the privately held hunting areas. There is also a year-round archery permit in areas closer the roads and buildings maybe less acceptable to have gun hunts in.
Great vid! Any comment/advice on how helical or offset fletching affects flight sound?
more helical angle, more sound. In general, I would only fletch between 1-3 degree. Anymore I don't see any advantage and just more arrow drop at distance. I use 1degree on micro diameter and around 2 degree on anything larger.
A great build I’ve had good luck with is the max stealth set a 2 degrees straight offset. I use this setting because I believe a 3 degree helical has to create more sound? On Carnivore shafts. I’ve always used two or four blade fixed heads. Never felt like even trying a mechanical as logically it adds another variable-not functioning. I only draw about 62#’s at 28” so my arrow speed is around 260. The best thing I learned many years ago killing whitetail deer is to aim low on the body. While spot/stalk and being more or less on the same plane the aiming spot doesn’t look so low but from one of my tree stands ( the bow is normally around 24-25 feet up) shooting down the angle looks almost like I’m aiming way low. I believe too many aim higher than the shoulder for that double lung hit which is a recipe for a spine hit or miss. And there are literally thousands of bow hunters than have no idea of the true anatomy of the shoulder, elbow and clavicle location. Thus they aim high thinking they won’t hit a bone.
HI Ryan...interesting topic. I bowhunt blacktail deer in CA and have witnessed similar behavior myself and with others of deer dropping or lunging away from arrows. Your explanation makes perfect sense to me. Hoping to try hunting the Lanai Axis deer one day in the future. Mahalo.
Hi Steve, which area do you go too?
I really enjoy your style n content
Thanks! 🤙

Read a couple of your post about hunting MK…if you haven’t given up on MK…and still trying…I was wandering if I could join you on MK sometime..LMK how I can contact you…use to hunt MK back in the day…both archery /rifle b4 irratication…1st time w/ my dad when I was 14/15 yo…up at the 11,000/12,000: level…when there were 2 great herds…move to big island recently…
I hardly hunt at home anymore so I wouldn't count on myself going hunting lately but I think you should just go as they aren't all gone yet. There's still some to find up there.
@@ryankohatsu8836…sad to hear…you seem the “diehard” continuing your search for an elusive prey when they were so plentiful so long ago…admired you for that….not to mention your fight for hunting rights/opportunities so long ignored in Hawaii?..seems to be a privilege sport now…unless you only want to pull a bow…but you take care…
If nothing else, it's good exercise up there haha! My childhood hunting was kind of "diehard," maybe borderline child abuse to people looking from the outside. I wouldn't have had it any other way and I'm glad my father was hard like that. Our society today is too soft and yes, the opportunities are disappearing year over year. Community can't organize and if they do, honestly are not savvy enough to figure it out; is what it is. I put in my time, money, and effort years ago to learn it and come to the conclusion that I either need tons more money and time or simply others will have to feel the pain to get motivated or discipline to do something. They just don't feel the pain enough like I did to do something. They just simply hunt somewhere else, poach, or trespass haha! I step off of it in good conscience that I did something myself albeit not sustainable. Might just be the way of things I have to accept.
@@ryankohatsu8836…tend to agree…unfortunately Hawaii…politically…is anti- guns, anti- hunting, back in the day we had Buck Tom…who fought for us…he had pronghorn brought to Lanai…sadly when he died so went hunting…like I said I’m back re acquainting myself to the game after some 40 yrs…seem all the commercial entity of hunting got it locked up…area access are all new to me…it’s all a new game…not like it was 40 years ago…but I WILL make it one last hurrah…and head on out…nice chatting with …thanks for taking the time…
Bro I live Oahu and have been wanting to learn how to hunt. What's some good recommendations to get started?
Easiest would be to shadow someone locally. Maybe that's something worth making a video on later.
Awesome content....was just there last month on the 28th till the 3rd with friends.... they hunted but I fished instead. Like you said, as well as my friend's have said, not much deer as years past. Great hunting vid...
Great video man! They are fast moving animals. Been following you since you hunted trad.
May bring back the trad haha
@@ryankohatsu8836 yeah man, it is very rewarding.
It is for sure. However, I do have to admit I kind of hated it in our crowded local public hunts. I didn't have any fun continually getting close, waiting hours on their beds, only to almost routinely have another hunter be upwind eventually and blow um all out everyday haha. It was pretty bad at one point. 600 hunters in 30,000 acres a day is literally the statistic back then. Some other areas I used to hunt would be on the order of 200+ hunters a day in 3,000 acres. Was crazy so I eventually just hung it up.
@@ryankohatsu8836 Man that sounds horrible… not like hunting at all. I have a privilege to hunt private land I guess.
Great video! Love the narration. Would love to hear narration from both perspectives; hunter who is trying to get in close & and your perspective on what you would do in those situations.
Great buck, much respect! I'll be back to Lanai in April to hunt for the 3rd time. Can't wait!
Nice breakdown Ryan! Sad to see that they are eradicating so heavily. I spent a month over there a few years back and would see officials going out at night to eradicate.
Sad for hunters good for the community and environment on Lani
If you only get one on lanai...you can always get more on Maui. There's thousands of axis deer on Maui.
Right ... except Lanai is pretty much the only public hunt I can hunt axis.
great video, where'd you get your Tabis?
I can't remember exactly. Couldve been WalMart or local fishing store. I've probably had those exact ones for 10 years.
Great vid as usual with great insight! I learn something new, said or unsaid, every time I watch it when I get back from a hunt. Thank you for your dedication to the art!
Congrats! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
mechanicals ftw. great for when things don't go to plan. good job ryan. they definitely got the 4 weeks archery season right spreading everyone out. its a shame they can't do it for sheep and bring back ewe first before rams to bring down ewe numbers and improve ram age class.
"Mechanicals ftw" 💯. There was a time I wouldn't be caught dead with one ... but times change and so has the technology and build for sure. Some folks told me they "don't like the 4 weeks spread." Oh well ... maybe they complained that it was too crowded before 😂. Would be cool if management structure could change as you suggest. However, old habits die hard in Hawaii ... maybe never. "It's too crowded" spread um out, "I don't like it, not enough pressure to move them around for me." "No more big rams." Ok, let's close it down some and maybe make limited tag holders and control some ewes ... "No, everyone gets a tag same time and killing ewes is eradication." Brah ... Hawaii is hard, some things (like our illogical and emotional community, cannot help). ...And we have a government, in an interest and weak culture to try to please everyone even amongst illogical requests, figures out the best way to go more illogical and please no one. 😂
Thank you for the video showing awesome video
Nice buck! Bring back memories! Damn I remember gutting my deer with thousands of flys just buzzing around, look like there non while you were deboning your deer. Stay blessed 🤙
If there was no wind, I'd probably be inhaling flies on a deep breath while deboning haha!
killa video hawaiian chee keep it coming bradda
Congratulations! Mahalo for sharing. Keep carrying that heavy camera I know I appreciate your efforts! God Bless
The thingg defies the laws of physics. It's light on day 1 and somehow gets heavier each subsequent day 😂
I always hunt down low. Right on the Kiawe line. Catch them coming in the trees for the day. Orr coming out in evening.
I watch your videos over 10 years ago about stick bow when i was starting out my bow hunting journey. Glad your still making videos
Thank you for the nice words. The stickbow may return .... 🤯
Congratulations on a great bow hunt! Your comments & insight during the hunt are priceless! I feel like other channels miss those details which as a bow hunter I really love to hear. Stay true to those values & the bow my friend. Great video 💯 Plan on bow hunting Hawaii in the near future!
Mahalos for sharing your hunt Ryan. I enjoyed watching. Makes me wanna pick up my bow again and head over to lanai. 🤙🏽
