    How to fix it... a very difficult question. Public awareness and education as you are prescribing is an excellent step. Great video, a positive and respectful way to voice your concern.

    Bravo! Well said sir. My wife and I are considering relocating to HI for early retirement. My only hang up is concern about archery hunting. Really enjoyed your thoughts about environmentalists and hunting.

    Well said Ryan, I'm in total agreement and I don't even live in Hawaii anymore. I understand your worries on this topic. So many people need to see this video.

      If the trajectory of the past is indicative of the future ... I guess I'm just observing the public hunting program in Hawaii die slowly. Not sure what to do as I think I've done just about everything (within the current structure) to try to change course. So, seeing that wasn't worth the continued energy other than learning where the obstructions are, I guess I'll just spread a word that the cliff is coming and see if others, collectively, will be more effective at changing course.

    You have the most rational view of the whole hunting in Hawaii situation!

      And wasted my time on Oahu dealing with the most irrational folks making all the decisions. Actually, I only believe half of them are irrational. The other half actually know exactly what I'm talking about but choose to peddle the environmentalist narrative for fear the situation for them is so binary. Hard thing observing completely intelligent folks suddenly stop their talk and go "no" can't do it (even though I might agree with this guy) haha! Politics ...

      @@ryankohatsu8836 I firmly believe that anyone who decides to be in politics should not be paid but a very minimal salary, have term limits, and only win that position by an election. This will prevent people who get appointed by their cronies and stay there because of the power they gain. It all comes down to money and power. I have lost most of my faith in our governmental system... they do not represent the people. Thank you for everything you have tried to do!

    Great video Ryan. My buddy and I were on the Big Island this past spring hunting turkey on Mauna Kea. We filmed our adventures on our channel "The Bayside Legion". I fell in love with that volcano and I can not wait until I can return and hunt the other game species you have on the islands. But you are absolutely correct in what you say. It may not mean much, but you have my support from way over here in Delaware!

    when the new saddle rd. got put in the writing was on the wall, the saddle used to be a beautiful lonely place, the reason i spent 35 years in Hawaii. i remember the sinking feeling in my heart when one morning i saw all the stakes and little red flags indicating where the new rd. was to go. bumma dat.

      P.S. I remember taking a break w/ my dogs over by power line rd. near the base of the mountain, where the new rd. curves in behind the first puu's. I was inside a bunch of dead trees, my dogs heads resting on my lap when a bunch of mouflon just passed by, maybe 75 animals, whole families...the dogs didn't see or smell them and I just kept still. it was quite a sight, they were less than 25 yds from me. this was pre "improved" saddle rd., I'm too old to walk now. You're the only sane voice I'm hearing in this whole b.s. debate, now that the mountain is "super sacred", it's always been sacred to us who spent any amount of time up there...i love it in the late afternoon when the mist rolls in. I was up there from 1980 until 2006. Aloha and good luck.

      I'm not entirely sure. I think I've done just about everything I could as one person and, combined with others, everything we could within the current State governing structure. It comes down to (I guess) typical politics. We've done what we could to get "heard" by the State and even legislating in a commission against some poor odds I felt. But, in the end, it hardly mattered. The individuals in control of the "levers of power" so to speak within Hawaii is not interested in meaningful discourse of merit and related action on it. Hawaii politics really loves the status quo and when they make moves, in the end follows the party agenda driven direction over actually following all the community talk and unity they did along the way. Cherry pick what the party agenda wants and discard the rest.
      Hunting (and fishing) are really a minority in the influence on public lands and waters here. More and more, each year, our State moves to controlling these public spaces through legislation from elected officials that know nothing and removing power from the State entities tasked with managing it. It's the State's fault too as being a poor arbitrator for these issues, eventually the political powers that be take it over legislatively. I say removing the poor performance folks we have in charge is one and the second is growing the hunting and fishing influence as their opposition has. If anything extreme environmentalists that control lots of things here pretty much wrote a playbook for anyone here to follow that eventually works. Albeit, may not be the most courteous way to do business, our politics seems to only pander to their wishes a lot and only reinforces this crazy method of governance we have.

      @@ryankohatsu8836 mahalo. I'm super new to this topic, and I've lived here all my life. I've always known we had hunting and of course fishing, but the subject of where to hunt (public lands), and the awareness of how that right is being taken away i had no knowledge of.
      I think your CZcams videos is a GREAT Step in bringing more awareness to who hunters are, and what they do.
      The majority of the public has no idea what's going on...guaranteed.
      Have you ever been on local radio or the news?

    When the government comes in for eradication, what happens to the game? Do they leave it or were does it go? Do they have no numbers on the game and reproduced rates?

    • @umedevelopment
      @umedevelopment Před 3 lety

      left where shot.... total waste of the meat and a huge lack of respect for the species.

    • @dustinauclaire1813
      @dustinauclaire1813 Před 3 lety +1

      So when they come in for eradication do they have unlimited tags for public? How does this get managed? The government should pay hunters to do eradication, then they don’t go to waste.

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  Před 3 lety

      There often unlimited, no bag limits before government eradications. An issue is even among zero limits, in some cases, many hunters just want to take home rams, billies, bucks and the females of the population persist and maintain a reproductive rate higher than the take rate. So even with liberal limits, sometimes the intended population control doesn't happen. The department should put out the data and educate the local hunters on how to successfully manage numbers in specific areas. It may require "female-only" type of targeted hunting to control the reproductive rate. Some of the problem could be the "trophy" mindset bias over population control if hunters are left to their own choice.

    I would love to come there and hunt for an axis deer on public land. How do I do it?

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  Před 3 lety

      There's almost no "public" land for axis hunting. There is public hunts offered on private lands. The most accessible would be Lanai Axis Deer Hunt. Look of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife Hawaii rules and regs and find the lanai axis deer hunt. It is easy to apply. It is hard to find logistics ... housing, car, etc. But it can be done.
