Mahalo for your insight on the Lanai Hunt. This has taken out a lot of the Mystery for me. I feel more confident on a game plan now. Hopefully 2024 hunt will be successful. Hope to see you in the field or a Archery contest soon.

Mr Ryan, love the content you put out. Thanks for all the info you share. I notice in this video you say you seen only 1 doe during the 1 rifle season you were hunting. It doesn't bode well for a guy who has never hunted Lanai on a later season (may 17th) rifle tag.... 🤦🏾 . Do you know anyone who rifle hunted last year? Im debating doing a hunt on maui instead but the obligation to DIY is strong haha

I watched this video before our hunt week and again after and I’m kicking myself for not paying closer attention to certain parts. One part that stuck with me the first couple times watching this video was when you said you think some hunters hike too much, so I told myself I wouldn’t do that. What I learned by the end of our week is what I thought was cutting down on the hiking was not nearly enough. Aside from the few times when I managed to be mentally strong enough to slow down and be purposeful with my movement, I just bumped deer all day and got frustrated just like you said. Seemed like a big and early rising moon every night had the deer bedding down before sunrise and variable winds didn’t help with trying to find em. Next year my plan is to drastically narrow down the areas I’m going to hunt for the day and stay committed to just working that area because everywhere we went there were deer, we just couldn’t stay focused enough to actually hunt em. Definitely think this will shorten the learning curve, although I guess only time will tell.

When was your hunt week? I drew a rifle tag for May 17th weekend. Never done the Lanai hunt so very interested to hear if you were seeing deer recently or was it last season? Seen that they changed the tag to 1 either sex so makes a guy wonder about population... debating maybe doing a guided hunt on maui instead because of that but DIY would be pretty epic...

@@sardaradhuga9132 we went last week and we saw deer every day at every spot we went to, but we were bumping em out of their bedding most of the time unfortunately..

@bluemusubi damn eh that's a rough go. Did you guys manage to tag one? I'm hoping with the rifle I'll be able to take a poke out and avoid bumping em 😂 . Any decent bucks around? I guess still early with velvet growth

@@sardaradhuga9132 our group of 4 managed 1 doe. We saw some nice velvet bucks and one hard horned one, but like Ryan says in his video they’re the first to hightail it out of there when anything seems off.

Ya they definitely wisen up fast eh. That's awesome though atleast you guys got 1 down. I'm sure they will be full alert hiding thick by the time rifle season comes around but I'm hoping being able to take a further poke with the gun will help the odds. Was this your first time going?

Do you think the deer eradication has been getting out of hand? Last year seemed pretty thin. Saw only pairs or small groups (except for the herd of 16 i spotted while my plane took off at the airport.) Keep up the great content!

Hard to say. I can see that the State tried to change the hunt around so the growth of population from corona lack of hunting could be managed down and that was what happened (far less population out there as a result). It seems the hunt has cut back to one deer on the tag this coming season which may feel like the State gets that maybe population is now on the lower end so cutting the take a bit is ok and numbers recover over next years. Deer population seem to bounce back fast so I wouldn't think increasing is not much a problem (other than making environmentalists upset). Hard to say in the end as our State doesn't particularly lay out a clear and concise plan or idea. We simply go year to year and who knows what happens.

Nice man! How did you fair on your rifle draw? Was it in the last few years?
